Goblins on balance, perhaps.

Specific goblins? They're as strong as dwarves, as stealthy as kobolds, and as ageless as elves. That's a successful combination.

A problem with setting an exact "1 ore boulder + 4 coal + 1 flux boulder = 4 pig iron" concept is that ores have differing purity, for one, and that metal bars, IIRC, have a 2-liter volume, while boulders have something like 50 liters of volume, and I can't recall what coal has, but basically, just because you have "one" of something and "one" of another thing, it doesn't mean that they are all equal amounts of those things.
Well, considering that a lot of that boulder is probably non-useful material...

(Also, welcome back Kohaku. I've noticed you wren't around this subforum for a while.)

Pause. How, in the real world, could one make a particular depression fill up with rain like a pond does?
In the real world you just dig a hole. It will fill up with water when it rains.
In DF rain doesn't actually turn into water unless it touches a pond tile.
Precisely. A better idea of what makes a pond is needed before we can talk about making artificial ones.

What should happen is that every time a raindrop hits ground it should generate 1/7 water, and this should happen everywhere. This would allow ponds or rivers to form naturally, depending on the shape of the terrain. I think water seeping through soil is a bit beyond what the game engine can handle, but sprouting up 1/7 water on impact is already in the game engine. If this was no longer restricted to pond tiles then you could get very interesting weather indeed.

Flooding could become a major issue, and fortresses in damp climates would need to be built with drainage. This means building an above ground fortress in a swamp biome would need a great deal of drainage. Or water may pour down stairs and ramps into underground fortresses, and this could be very hazardous if this isn't planned for.
Oh Armok, the lag.
I agree with the general idea but not the details.

IMO, pond tiles should be done away with entirely. Rain should be much more natural, and it should cause water to appear everywhere it hits. Ponds would behave just like they currently do, and they will refill when it rains. Artificial bodies of water could be made simply by digging a hole so water can't drain off the side of the map and waiting for it to rain.
I'd also like this. Of course, "improved murky pools" is a fair bit down the line...

Yeah, you're right about that.
Glad to hear it.  :P

I wish there was a way to FILL holes, without cave ins. I like to have my cemeteries outside, but I've resorted into drowning the coffins.
Agreed, not that I'm sure how this is germane...

I am glad a webcomic was linked. Order of the stick ho!
Not that webcomic.

What if we have some sort of "road" (mountain path?) on which you can fast travel, that is made whenever someone scouts them?
At least in world gen, but eventually in normal gameplay as well
I like this idea. Mountain passes, dwarven roads (unless they're underground), stuff like that.

Wanna look that up yourself?
Sorry, I left my copy of Medieval Mail Delivery at the bookstore.

Here's an interesting question: How did mail delivery work in the real-world medieval world?
More or less the same way it worked back in Ancient Rome; slowly (compared to current time). Most often the messages were carried by couriers with horses. The requirements to become a courier was to be physically fit (strong and healthy) to survive the journey and know more than one language. In case of religious messages, the courier was required to have knowledge of Latin.
It usually was a freelance work, due the nature and dangers, and the couriers were usually competing against other couriers. It wasn't even rare to have situation where the courier was ambushed by another courier just to get the given task from the original one, especially if the message was important and the clients were wealthy and powerful enough.
Good to know.

I want to "work" as a courier in Adv. mode now.
Hell, I want to have any kind of actual work there, since there's basically nothing to do in the long run.
+1

I think that this has been suggested before a great many times.

Also, would a dwarf be able to stand on a half-wall and stick into the tile above?

DF Suggestions / Re: Fortress mode Slavery
« on: January 26, 2013, 04:35:12 pm »
Suggested a lot before, dwarves have tag's that show dwarves believe slavery is unacceptable. With goblin fortress's or random ethic tag's you may see some slaves but I wouldn't be surprised if toady had ethical concerns that just kept them out forever.
This so very much.

yeah, but ethics tags can be modded.
So can materials with negative density and dwarves that spit flaming chunks of pus. So?

i support prisoner labor, not slave labor.
The distinction being?
Are the laborers willing, well-treated, and fairly compensated?

This is planned for if/when goblins and perhaps humans can be played, but until then stop suggesting this. Also, please freaking search! Just because you think you have an incredibly novel and amazing idea doesn't mean you don't need to check before suggesting something.

((Armok, I miss Footkerchief.))

DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarven Medicine
« on: January 26, 2013, 04:31:59 pm »
I'd like to note that painkillers used medicinally are mostly a fairly recent thing. In medieval Europe (which DF is least loosely based on), and in most areas before the 1400 cutoff date, there wasn't much of anything in the way of painkillers for surgery. I'm not sure if this was due to culture, availability, compatibility with contemporary medical procedures, or what, but it still doesn't seem to fit.

If we get over or around that problem, poppies or some sort of fantasy plant would work well. (Maybe golden salve is a painkiller?)

Or, alternatively, how we will end this game.

(I support the above plan nonetheless.)

Our new creation/Tallman/Jara creature is pretty excellent at scouting and probably assassination, so I suggest we think of things to scout for. Our main targets should probably be Maher and The Empire of Tranquility, with the Empire being more important to prepare for, in my opinion.
Jara is his personal name, and Laskus should teach him the basics before we send him on any missions.

After this:
Tell him we were trying to create a new race to act as scouts and assassins for us but that we weren't expecting him to be born sentient.  Since he is though, we'd like him to live in our town and consider working for us.
or something like it first, of course.

(And what kind of name is Jim, anyways?)

aid in the festival preparations
Also, if possible, research the upper and lower limits of golem creation. Fine golems? Golems the size of cities? Quadrupedal, vermiform, swimming, or flying golems? Golems made of gems, sand, ice, etc?
