Roll To Dodge / Re: Perplexicon: Magic is Confusing: Null

Screw it, I don't feel like being subtle anymore. And we're already spreading magical knowledge willy-nilly. And it's not like these words aren't common knowledge.

"Je'Rael-Cainthalsaz! Hurry!"

Become Thor. Convince Loki to rebel against Knight Tiger. Assuming the same difference in bonuses as in YASFB, he's got a good shot...

DF Suggestions / Re: Magic/Enchanted Wood
« on: January 14, 2013, 06:10:34 pm »
Personally, I like Dwarf Fortress without everything being made out of magic.
...How is elven-imported wood "everything"?

I wanted to stay away from the technology analogy GreatWyrmGold because what Elves do is odd to us as a society and arn't using technology.
I was trying to explain how something that to us can seem like magic, could just be an ordinary everyday thing to Elves.
The techhnology analogy is perfectly apt.
"Oh, my, what is this strange device which speaks, listens, and replies?" "It's called a walkie-talkie."
"Wow, how can you make such excellent wooden goods? It's like the tree was grown to form a sword." "It was."
Perfectly so.
"How is it made?"
"Well, first you slice the silicon boules into wafers, then punch out the chips and mount them, then make sure you have a constant operating voltage of 9V from a portable miniature pile like this one, then hook up a microphone and a receiver and a transmitter and make sure they're wrapped around something tall and metallic to intercept incoming radio waves, and you'll need some other circuitry as well but I've forgotten the basics."

"How is it made?"
"You do a little dance around the sapling ere the Autumn Equinox and the tree starts dropping wooden swords everywhere by the Solstice. Stop asking me about it."
1. You're assuming that a random guy with a walkie-talkie actually knows how said walkie-talkie works.
2. Another problem: Elves, being stereotypically distrustful of other races, would be unlikely to share their secrets with other races in the first place. Comprehension has nothing to do with it.
3. Elven magic presumably functions on principles that don't work on nonmagical worlds, because...well, it's kinda implied by "magic."
4. Clarke's Third Law. (Also Heterodyne's First Law.) If you don't understand it, it's magic. If you do, it's not.

DF Suggestions / Re: Alert and ordinary burrows should intersect
« on: January 14, 2013, 06:05:13 pm »
It would also be nice if you could tell dwarves to stick to either both of their burrows at once or either burrow.

Of course, I'd like to note that sometimes it would be nice to have normal burrows ignored in case of alert (e.g, woodcutter's burrows); presumably this would be toggled on a per-burrow basis.

I didn't think "Catholic" or even "Christian" until you mentioned Catholicism at the bottom.

We're able to accept using simple, obvious words for concepts that they almost fit. For a while, I was discussing in a thread which used the word "angel" to mean "any servant of a deity." (Then some new people came in and failed to comprehend that that's what we were talking about. Despite being told.  ::))

Regardless of his grammar, why does OP think his dwarves are stronger than Armok? Armok doesn't exist!
HOW DARE YOU UTTER SUCH BLASPHEMY! READY THE KITTEN CANNON!
He doesn't exist in-game.

Nor FPS cap. Just . . . . until the desired number of frames has been advanced.

General Discussion / Re: Humans, and eventually a colony on Mars.
« on: January 13, 2013, 10:43:33 pm »
Fear asteroids?  Mars has no protection against them -- so you'd have to dig massively.  A ring can move out of the way of anything dangerous.
Mars has about the same chance of being struck by an asteroid as Earth--lower gravity, but closer to the asteroid belt. It's still pretty low, especially for anything that affects a single colony.

Quote
Want minerals -- either send a ship to shoot the stuff off of a planet (for the massive amounts of material factor) or the more subtle mining.
And how is that better than having all the hematite you want at your feet?

Quote
Redundancy -- just build another ring.
Or...another colony!

Quote
Energy -- beam it from Mars get it without a shred of dust to worry about.
This makes no sense. How would dust get in the way of Martian power used on Mars, but not Martian power beamed to a space station?

You're also leaving out radiation, the biggest danger in space. Mars? Underground bunkers or something. Space station? Coffins.

Quote
I do think that Mars may happen because we seem to be planning for it. http://sciencefriday.com/segment/01/11/2013/simulating-the-red-planet-on-the-pale-blue-dot.html  But I think that the benefits are less than advertised.
It's better than space stations, though. Seriously, I can't think of any real benefit that a space station would do better than Mars. Unless you're really afraid of that vanishingly small chance of an asteroid hitting right next to your colony more than the rather higher chance of a solar flare or something...

A GMing position.

Welcome to Bay12. All sanity must be checked at that incinerator over there. (You can probably sneak it in, but don't let them catch you. Watch what happens:)

HEY GUYS, I'M SANE!

Aww come on guys quit being silly.

Oh, and Unholy_Pariah: You could just say they're from Phobos and/or Deimos and be done with it.

Punch someone evil in the face
[3] You punch Yog-Sothtoh in the knee.

Do the fish rain dance.
Become neutral/unallied

[3] A bigger fish hits some eldritch abomination in the face.

"Okay, what the fuck. Seriously guys? You know better than to say da_nang's name; now he's here! And Yog-Sothoth: how did you get beat up? You are literally everything!
Ah well. Hey GWG. You the new GM?"

Fuse all the stars in the universe into one gigantic superstar. Charge a lazer with it's power and rip a hole in reality to the dimension my infinite children reside in.
[1] You turn yourself into a star. This causes the eldritch abominations to glance at each other, swipe your metaphysical wallet, and wander away.

REBUILD LICH. STRONGER, FASTER, SEXIER EPICCER.
[4] You make a robotic body for the lich.

Create Faction: dragons
Call dragons to join the Faction

[6] All nearby dragons are drawn to your faction. Disagreements break out...

>FUSE THE ESSENCE OF THE HEART INTO THE SWORD, MAKE IT POWERFUL
>CONTINUE ASSAULT

[2-1] A fish hits you in the face! The fish is fused with your very form! So is the heart and the sword, making you a: Hearty Swordfish Monster! Ah ha ha!

BECOME LOVING PARENT!
ASK DEMILICH TO RESURRECT MOTHER OF CHILD SO FROSLASS CAN HAVE A NORMAL CHILDHOOD AS THE OFFSPRING OF A GHOST POKEMON AND AN ICECREAM CONE!
[1] You create a massive castle surrounded by a moat of lava and guarded by Charizards to protect your daughter, and give her a pet Houndoom (those are Fire/Dark, right?) for company. [3] The mechalich gives you some more ice cream. Needless to say, your (still-nameless) daughter does not have a normal childhood.

well that just had to happen didn't it
Bring out the ARMOR SHATTERER. Fire a salvo at TopHat.
[4] You have a...poorly-defined weapon! It seems to be some sort of ranged weapon which shoots four times! [6,1,3,6] You shoot TopHat twice, his hat once, and yourself once. The debreis and, um, radiation? from the shots merge with TopHat, making him a half-stone-golem. Who had his hat knocked off.

Continue to summon mythological heroes.
[1] You summon some mythological villains: Lucifer, Hera, and King Midas.

Equip the magic stuff.
Remove those honour barrier thingies.
Summon more hatlings.
Send current minions to sabotage creation of dragons faction
(EDIT) and send some others to sabotage Doomblade

[4+1-3-1] You strengthen the Honor Barriers! [6] You summon 60 hostile beanies! You have no living minions!

Sabotage TopHat's Plans, stay in the Villains faction instead of the dragons faction.
[3] You create a new Villainous Dragons faction!

Be an ancient being from before the dawn of game. Be Betty White. Play country music.
((Glad you joined! How do you think the game is, so far?))
[3] It's not very good Country Music...

Join Lich with Squidward. Upgrade villains after joining.
[6] You use Squidward as fuel for the Mechalich! Squidward's ghost appears and [6v1+4] takes over the MechaLich! He starts a new Sane People faction!

Imperial because Godwin's Law otherwise. TO GLORIOUS BAAAAAAAAATTLE.
Good choice! [5] You slaughter some nameless mooks! And a fairly major antagonist: Cthulhu!

Sabotage TopHat's Plans, stay in the Villains faction instead of the dragons faction.
Also send other hatlings to sabotage Doomblade's plans to sabotage my plans to sabotage the creation of the faction.
Um, not only do you not have hatlings, Doomblade doesn't seem to be doing that.

BOSS TURN:
*counts* Seven factions...hey Spinal, how many were there when Xantalos formed the Omnicidalists?
The Villains and the Awesome Mythological People have a little get-together. [4+4v3+2] The Awesome Mythological People are convinced to join the Villains! Six factions now.
