Why not? If they are ruins, then something must have happened. If something happened, a forgotten beast is as good as anything. If a forgotten beast bothered them, then somebody must have made some records. If the forgotten beast is not dead, then why would it not be in the same area?
Maybe it would directly describe the forgotten beast, but the engravings' descriptions might be something like "It shows a giant creature" (If it's a poor engraving) or "It shows a giant snake destroying the city. Webs are depicted. The depiction of the snake makes it look shiny." (if it's an outstanding engraving)
In both cases, the forgotten beast is a giant metal snake that shoots webs. One of them is relatively useless, the other is usefull. You may not know if it's a steel FB or a copper one, but it's something hard. You may not know if it's accurate (and the FB might be made out of water, which would also be shiny). It could just hint at an FB that's in the area.
My problem is the "next" bit. Not only would that require precognition of the ruin-makers, it also requires DF to choose the order of Forgotten Beast attacks when it makes the ruins...
Oh, and for posterity:
the next forgotten beast that's going to attack your fort
I'm not against ruins with engravings of forgotten beasts per se, but they do need to be ones which make sense...

And, just to note, Pompeii was preserved by ash, not lava.

DF Suggestions / Re: Vector based font

On the other hand, if there are no big advantages to shoes and most people don't know how to tie them, then we oughta stick with slippers.
By your own admission you don't understand vector graphics, so who are you to judge whether there are big advantages to them or not?
The only one people have brought up is zooming in or out. Guess what? I have only seen one thread in this entire forum which even brings up zooming for any length of time. On the other hand, they're also evidently much harder to work with. If there was some way to easily convert convenient little pixel tilesets into vector-based ones, sure, but otherwise...not really worth it.

Here's an inherent quality: A few clicks by just about anyone can make a pixel tileset. You need to understand vector graphics to make vetor tilesets.
You really, really don't need to understand vector graphics.
Oh? How does one manage to design something they don't understand? Use, sure, but design requires some level of understanding. In this case, more than the average Bay12er likely has.
I could say the exact same for pixel graphics.
Difference: Pixel graphics are more intuitive and simpler. I want to change the dwarven smiley face with pixels? Simple, I just open the image file and click a few times in the right areas. I want to do the same thing with vectors? I need to learn how vectors work and probably use some kind of vector-using program like the one you showed a few pages back. I still can't figure out how to make a good-looking image with that thing.

But, of course, I seem to be the only one paying attention to this thread who doesn't see vector graphics for the unwieldy things they are to most people, including most DF players, and who only sees the minor benefits. Therefore, I will not be paying any more attention to this thread. It's becoming a headache.

Fun fact: Dwarven children do, in fact, haul. Just not as often as adult dwarves do.

Future seaside exploration would be nice....
Is your starting hex near the ocean?

10ebbor10, Child of Armok, Dariush, javierpwn, mesor, and scapheap have replied with their empires. That seems to be everyone, awesome. Could everyone bring up their last-minute questions and possibly quote their empirey stuff so we can finish this bit up?

Korea, Yes, Yes, Some. Start with little things, like pain tolerance and pallor. And fragility (seriously, sometimes it's like zombies are made of tissue paper).

General Discussion / Re: Humans, and eventually a colony on Mars.
« on: January 13, 2013, 11:48:51 am »
And as I said before, we got a lot of empty land on Earth. The best proof that empty land is not the most important ressource of all is that the Sahara is mostly empty. And it has a lot of cool perk that Mars doesn't have, like an athmosphere and protection from cosmic ray.
And as I've said before, anything you make on Earth will require stepping on someone's toes or be very limited in size, not to mention still affecting and being affected by all Terran problems.

This might be splitting hairs a little, but a cruise ship has no chance of sustainable living for even a handful of people. I'm not sure if a couple thousand people could even fit on a cruise ship.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_world's_largest_cruise_ships
I stand corrected. If you had one of the largest cruise ships in the entire world and some way to magically generate food, you could, in fact, have a self-sustaining population on a cruise ship.

Quote
Sustaining a population on a cruise ship is child's play compared to sustaining one on mars.
Oh? How do you get enough food? (Hypothetically, you could use the same sort of greenhouses I've been proposing for Lunar or Martian colonies, but space on a cruise ship is MUCH more limited. Related:) Where will you put everything and -one? How will you get resources to make new clothes, books, whatever when the old ones wear out? What will you do, bereft of any kind of mineral or other resource, many of which are so common on Mars, when something inevitably breaks?

Probably not exactly like Dr. Device, but a similar function at least.

Uplift the inhabitants of my new planet to sentience and interstellar travel. Lead the to Earth, so they can spread to word of Rationality and such. Sounds like they need it...

Ness-Y makes a note. "Finally, Citizen Mayfair-R-FUN-1, what would you do if you discovered that I, Ness-Y-LOX, was a traitor?"

Okay, thanks.
