You may know exactly what it says, but that doesn't mean you can do it perfectly. If you read a cookbook once, then tried to make a souffle, how well would it go?
Now apply that to necromancy
It is power granted dirrectly through forbidden knowledge. It is either perfectly known or not accessed.
This is because it isn't a skill. You now command the dead, there is no skill because this ability is already perfected because it can only be perfect. In otherwords it isn't a cookbook but rather like a membership card to an exclusive club that you either own or you do not own.
No, Necromancy shouldn't be like that. Magic isn't an on/off switch. Maybe some people have the potential to do magic and some never will, but learning how to bend the forces of nature to your will isn't something you pick up overnight. Name a single example of a fantasy world in which magic isn't something you need to take a while to learn how to do right.
Read the tablet last week, never tried it? Maybe you can raise that neat squirrel corpse or whatever, but the ancient necromancer who's memorized every scratch and contour of that valuable slab and raised more bodies than you've had breakfasts is going to do it better.

Quote
Not that I object to a Necromancy skill but with the way it is currently hinted as to working I'd think it would be for using necromancy in new ways not expressly given to you by the tablet. For example giving the mindless undead more complex commands. It wouldn't be a check to do necromancy but rather to stretch necromancy.
Um, don't use that craptastic "DF as it is now" excuse. I hate when people do that. DF is in alpha. Its features are in tatters or missing entirely. Necromancy isn't finished. DF2012 wasn't Toady's final word on the subject.

You want to raise a zombie or a lot of zombies all at once? Skill is useless.
Why?

Quote
Though that is just one way it could be done. As long as there is a idea that a necromancer isn't entirely a novice. The skill should be about quality and stretching over just performing it.
Why not? You can't start out as a master.

Or rather... A Necromancer will never fail at making a Souflee. If that Necromancer wants to make a blackberry chocolate Souflee, it may require something else.
Um, you aren't going to make a perfect souffle on Day 1, Try 1. It'll take trial-and-error, time, effort, etc. Once you actually learn what the heck you're doing? Sure, you don't even need to look at the slab/cookbook. Until then, good luck...

I'll check my gear and remember what I got sent here for. As well as the plan we, of course, went over before dropping.

@GWG: I suppose that would be reasonable as well; but make it two years.
Fair. But as we're not hammering out anything too concrete yet, it doesn't matter.

I think that i should get complete control over the Sun-substitute warrior after life. I mean, if everyone wanted their followers then the replacement sun would go out.
I don't follow.

What if I want all life to die?
What if it gives me power?
I could just try to create a race which thrives in darkness
Or GWG can make a fungus which is glow in the dark, and edible

If everyone were to die, I would gain 100 power soley from all the human deathss
Why me?
Oh, yeah, the minor domain.
Try not to kill everything.

...They're made of MUD. Firejackets can deal with them. Harden the mud...WOOPS looks like they're immobile...I know she's an earth god, but once they're hard we can use the vines to shatter them. Let them shatter the skeletons attack. He has a hundred.
You're assuming that that works. A. Lots of golems move when hardened. B. This includes the original Golem, of Prague, which was basically a glorified mud statue. C. Most piles of mud that size have moisture on the inside, too.

... Screw it, if a person dedicates themselves to fighting, they're mine.
Isn't that what LB tried to kill you over?

forests for the Eladrin
Not just any kinds of forests, forests located in areas of good nature, let us call them forest retreats!
Why? The Eladrin have either been wandering and doing good or spending time in the humans' city ever since they were created.

Thanks GWG, but not really what I was looking for. I need to make it fit to current lore, and it produces too large of types of terrain; massive swathes rather than patches, rivers, etc.
It's what I've been able to find.

My carriers will live in the "evil" biome, filled with corrupted, diseased land, which slowly spreads across the countyside, consuming or transforming all it touches
Maybe the biome itself will produce vaporous clouds which transform people into "husks" of their former selves
Keep it to your own turf and come up with your own material, and I have no complaints.

The mud golems sound like one. They'll squash the skeletons and villagers alike. Pretty much only Tiberius has ANY chance against them without some teamwork and sheer numbers, and he's outnumbered and half the size of those things.

@GWG,

I'm fine with you being a judge; but I retain veto power in specific instances. There could be a set quantity of vetoes if that would be an acceptable parameter.
We'll figure something out once we know who all's collaborating on this.

A question, for my assistance. Anyone know where a good map creator is, preferably hex based?

And can someone give me a list of towns?
I've got a map generator (hex-based) that I'm using for my new Feudalism game. HEre it is.

I believe me and my fellow criminals should have a jury of our criminal peers, who get the final decision in the trials
[/trollface]
But seriously, can I have a jury/veto spot?
Every god gets three reincarnations to use on their mortals. This is the right I offer to all gods.
I'd rather have something like an annual allotment of one soul to reincarnate.

It's not so much an alliance as "Stop killing us long enough so we can focus on the bigger threat, and we'll stop killing you long enough so you can focus on the bigger threat."

The orcs have no death fields, send a few experimental firejackets after them. If they are successful, send more.
No! The orcs are outside fighting the skeletons, we need them alive until the greater threat is gone.
Let them fight, skeletons are worse to deal with while orcs are easy for us.
Let them fight, while we fight the skellies as well. This death god made Hitler's blunder...
Godwin' law.
The Russia thing, not the Holocaust thing...
Dammit.

Anyways, I would also suggest mentioning the possibility of allying ourselves with Maher long enough to mash the mud golems, maybe longer if we can.
