General Discussion / Re: Video Games from a Barter World
« on: January 06, 2013, 09:31:10 pm »
Well jewellery is a really popular commodity currency, it's light, it's common, and you can wear it around to keep it safe/show off your wealth. So I suppose he could run around collect necklaces and such, though collecting rings might be a bit of an issue if you don't make him blue and really good at rolling around at high speeds.
Jewelry isn't a commodity. Not every necklace is worth the same; not every pearl necklace is worth the same; etc. There are too many differences between examples of jewelry for that to work. It's a good store of value, and in certain circumstances a decent medium of exchange, but a worthless unit of account.
Not commodity, just money then? Or trade medium?
Money doesn't work if it's a craptastic unit of account. I can't say that my Masterwork Club is worth two necklaces, because some necklaces are worth more than others. However, I can say that my Handmade Robust Walking Stick is worth two dollars because every dollar is the same.
Jewelry and the like are okay trade items, but terrible currency.

I'd be interested to hear what the FDA doesn't test for that could hurt people...

Save Zanzetkuken with some new superpower the writers make up and forget about unless it somehow becomes vital again!

A-duh. Reread that last post, the bit about why we can't use the resources of the gas giants...

Having thicker hide work better than thinner hide makes sense. It's probably planned already, but it makes sense.

3. In Dwarf mode - opportunity develop without automatic pause.
For this, do you mean being able to be in the 'd' or 'k' or whatever menu without being paused? I'd imagine that there would need to be some important rewrites to make sure those menus were correct even as DF was running.

As for #2, if you could do that the manager would be darn near obsolete.

Magic that is completely unknowable is silly. Why even learn magic?

Heck how would you go around learning it?
This is how you learn magic. Not by reading a slab (although that's Step 0), but by actually doing magic. Did Harry Potter read his spellbooks and suddenly could cast every spell in them? No, he had to practice first.

Interesting, yes.
And it would also mean that we wouldn't need multi-tile creatures anymore, since we can just scale dragons to their true size.
I don't follow.
From my reading (and without re-reviewing the pre-necro parts of the thread in working out the latest thought developments), if a dragon was a D next to a c kitten, no longer constrained to a Curses-esque character grid.
...How would that work AT ALL with no multitile creatures?

But the rewrites...
Dwarf Fortress' entire everything is designed around the idea that everything takes up the same amount of space.
Wagons, workshops, buildings in general, terrain features, and next update, trees. Oh, and Toady's said he's planning multi-tile creatures.
Wagons as multi-tile creatures are a dead-end idea, from what I understand of what Toady has written (although I don't know if I have the full info on this).  Future multi-tile creatures, if any, would be done differently.  Perhaps Wagons will then be re-written for the 'new style' multi-tiling.
Wagons as creatures is dead-end; while future multi-tile creatures will be different, they'll still be, you know, multiple tiles.

All the rest is based on either fixed templates of unit components (workshops, four templates each for the directionisable siege engines) or pseudorandom permutations of tile-cubed units (vector paths between nodes for roads, varying cuboidal structures or subterranean rooms with procedural feature emplacement within them and their walls, flood-fill and limited-flood-filling pastings, according to what and where it is.  But still the units take up the same space.
Okay, but you said that EVERYTHING takes up the same place.
And...siege engines and other buildings still take up multiple tiles. A screw pump is a screw pump, not two divisible halves of a screw pump.

Quote
Even the multi-tile trees are just procedurally 'grown' using the basic units, from what I have seen.  (I'm not disparaging them for this, in fact I quite like what has been done to do this, it probably has needed quite a bit of tuning to get it looking right, and is probably going to be further perfected before release.)
They are still multiple tiles.
By this time, I'm certain I have no idea what you're saying.

The rest of what you wrote provided no new epiphanies, so I'll wait for you to explain some more before commenting.

DF Suggestions / Re: Alkali Metals
« on: January 06, 2013, 09:12:09 pm »
What does any of this 15-century technology nonsense have to do with alkali metals, and why does it matter?
Toady says that technology in DF will never exceed what there was in the 1400's, or maybe 1400, or maybe 1400's Europe.
Alkali metals weren't extracted until the 18th century or so.
Therefore dwarves cannot extract alkali metals.
This is also why they cannot refine bismuth (first described 1546, in Germany) or nickel (first isolated and identified 1751, also in Germany). They are also incapable of making nickel silver, which was developed in China and was only replicated in Europe in the 1770s. What's more, platinum is completely inaccessible to the dwarves, as platinum was only brought to Europe from South America in the year 1557, and even if they were to acquire some platinum, it would be completely impossible to refine it into bars, as its melting point is very high and it was only first worked through a three-step process involving aqua regia, ammonium chloride and burning the resulting ammonium chloroplatinate. All of these described technologies are totally inaccessible to the dwarves as a result of the strictly enforced tech level.
I agree, those should be removed too. In fact, I argued pretty vocally about aluminum and platinum in particular a while back. Want a link?
No, that's pathetic.
Really, the point here is that rigorously sticking to a tech level for no reason, thinking nothing about how fun or useful the additions are, is just boring. The examples were that Toady isn't a ginormous hardass for tech level 100% of the time, not that omg we should totally remove pre-existing and perfectly acceptable to almost anyone content for the sake of realism.
Well, what do alkali metals really add?
And it's entirely possible that Toady was not aware that smelting platinum or nickel or whatever was impossible in the Middle Ages.
Besides, it's one thing to add in smelting metals that you can't smelt before the 1400's. It's another to add metals that you can't keep from burning or exploding before the 1400's.

Roll To Dodge / Re: Roll to time travel

You can definitely move through space as well as time, yeah. However, I'm going to have to veto the sidewinder ability. This is going to be hard enough to keep track of without trying to work with even more alternate universes.
Aw. Let me rethink this a bit...

EDIT: Can we have negative values for some stats? Or other ways of having negative points added?

Pluto is a dwarf planet. You can't mine it. You monster.

Seriously, how the hell did we choose these morons? Elves are one thing, but complete MORONS is another. "There might be life on Jupiter in a few billion years!" Ugh.
