If they can shoot a hundred Hiram-I's out of the sky, we send in a thousand.
They're dead ten times faster, so they destroy one-tenth the drones.

The numbers are made up, the concept's good.

And my point is that, unless they're expecting drones, they're unlikely to have prepared for them.
And your point is a failure cause it doesn't matter if they don't know about drones cause A) PD is made to kill drones, no matter what way you cut it point defense turrets have the purpose of killing things like drones. B) They control most of the system any ships we produce they'll know about before we use. Then there is most importantly C) we don't choose how many of what is built, they could choose to make 10 or 10000 of the drones we just make the designs so in the end our plans for them don't matter
A. Point defense intended for use against drones is different (in this case, more complex/expensive) than point defense made only for missiles and other projectiles. If pirates don't expect drones, they won't waste time or resources on improved targeting range, improved AI, etc.
B. They control the system, but not the planet. Unless they have spies on-planet, in which case we're screwed pretty much whatever way we go.
C. They'll probably listen and act smart. If we say, "Here's the Hiram-I, it's useless in small numbers," they'll probably be smart enough not to make only small numbers. I have some faith in humanity...

the left teste was a gift from the goddess, not one we earned ourselves, we shouldn't hoard it greedily. it is only fitting that we bestow it upon someone devout to her and dedicated to restoring the old faith. besides, a lineage of sea-bound trolls wouldn't compete with our progeny. if we succeed in establishing a cult to the night trolls we're effectively creating the foundation for a platform of collaboration between night trolls regardless of lineage. instead of reviving the isolationist culture of our fathers, we'd be creating a faction that could not only survive, but could reasonably aspire to dominate the world
Also, we'd be spreading out the night trolls some.

as for the current action, most elves sound like good brides, and i'm really curious about the one bound in vines, but i suspect we can only take one of them. i'm confident whatever we pick will have an interesting result, but we shouldn't be greedy. we should just pick one and get out
I still vote adventurer.

I do not think we should set the building we are currently in on fire.
And sigging.

As noted, I suggest we try to take the adventurer elf. She'd probably have a wide variety of experiences that would be of use. In my opinion, secondary choices would be the rogue (of course), the mage, or coldbreath. Whoever we choose, we should take some combination of the older elf's axe and possibly armor, the rogue's lockpicks and dagger, the adventurer's stuff. Yay, loot!

I just ask you to not assume that pirates are morons and will not take countermeasures to any kind of weapon TR-12 will field
Only if I can assume that they're not psychic and that we could find ways to circumvent those countermeasures.

It'll be more. A railgun slug is a kinetic projectile. You want to transfer kinetic energy, so if the slug is lighter, you have to make it move even faster, requiring an even stronger magnetic field. Meanwhile, we certainly don't have 100% efficiency magnets, so the farther you scale up the field the more energy we waste. Also, interference with other drones or the drone itself is annoying.
Fine, scrap the cheaper ammo if you must.

Quote
We're in deep space. Everything flying around ends up in an orbit, or into the sun. In both cases they'll likely be a danger for a few weeks. Which is problematic, since the convoy is in the middle of the shell. Also, you can't just dodge or intercept a railgun shell. They're made of plastics, which has the one benefit that they're much harder to see.
Another reason to scrap the plastic.
Why can't you dodge them? It's not like you can't see them. Maybe you'd only have an hour or so before impact, but that's plenty of time to accelerate slightly and avoid the shell.

Quote
It's not hard to modify a point defense system to account for both drones and missiles. Fast reaction Laser point defense  (needed to destroy nearby missiles) will be fast and strong enough to intercept the drones. Provided they aren't flying more than a lightsecond out. But if they're that far their railguns are harmless anyway.
A point defense system made to efficiently intercept missiles, which nicely have a predictable target, are closer, and move towards the ship, won't work as well against drones, which have none of these helpful qualities and can also take evasive action.
A point defense system which takes these into account will be either more expensive or possibly less effective against missiles than one which doesn't, and therefore makes no sense if you're not expecting drones.
I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying the pirates likely don't have them unless they're somehow expecting drone attacks.

Quote
Nah. Not at all. Note that a missile is a long range weapon. The farther your PD can shoot, the better it's interception chances are. True, not all systems are as effective. Flak defenses will have significant problem with delay, but a decent laser point defense should be able to bridge the distance quite well. After all, not all missiles can be intercepted by standard missile defenses. (Kinetic missiles, breakup missiles, matroska drone missiles, close detonation missiles)
Um...missing context, sorry. Quotes are your friend.

Here I provide my vision of the Oculus Sentry:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The things that look like X-wing lasers canons are in fact the communication lasers. Red triangles and blue dishes are sensors. Black/red cuboids are electrical generators.

Size and mass on the right. a little more than 3 tons.
You really need to share what software you're using for that.

I suppose that an ideal ammunition for the Hiram-I could be determined within the month. I'm open to anything effective and not too expensive. Because, you know, giving a cheap drone expensive ammo defeats the purpose.

Well since you folks seem to be stuck at a weapon choice expect laser/rails. Can't we use one of these?

-Heated Plasma
-Ion cannons
-Live ammunition (Good 'ol bullets)

About the missiles... We keep thinking about the big lumbersome kind, which hits hard. We could make a missile which splits into lesser missiles, It reduces he effective damage of point defense because it has more targets to destroy. But we sacrifice destruction power for it though, on the other side. Hitting something is better than nothing right?
Heated plasma might work, but it sounds like an awfully close-range weapon without some sort of capsule around it.
What the heck is an ion cannon?
If by good "ol'" bullets you mean chemically-propelled projectiles, no. Those don't work too well in space for a few reasons I'll try to look up. Heat is one of them. They really don't have any benefit over railguns to make up for that, either.
The splitting missile might work, depending on the level of extant point defense. If it's a dozen automatic lasers to a side, it's screwed anyway, but a single human-controlled laser (terrible point defense, though) would be easily defeated by that move.

A railgun relies on a magnetic field to arcelerate a projectile. If 80% of that projectily is not magnetic, the railguns magnetic field needs to be 5 times as strong and energy using to compensate.Besides, we can't really do the biopolymer thingy. Our plastic is limited to basic plastics. Can't even make reentry capable plastic or stuff like that.
I'd like to hear the GM's ruling on the polymer before writing it off, and the 80% plastic was to reduce costs...because we don't have lots of irorn.
Besides, plastic is typically lighter than iron, so less than five times as much as a solid iron round.

Quote
Drones are always going to be operating near convoys. Space isn't as big when they're doing that. Besides, these shells will accumulate in orbit.
Probably but they'd be detected before impact so it would be easy to point-defense or dodge away, and they projectiles would probably be going too fast to orbit.

Quote
At this moment the GM hasn't really said anything about any sort of ship, so I'm basing things of logic. The most logic thing is that most ships will not have a giant gaping hole in their defenses. I assume that the GM hasn't even closely read, and certainly wouldn't comment on all the posts untill a turn comes by.
I suggested the idea, twice, and others suggested combat drones.
Tour "logic" relies on combat drones being common enough that people would be willing to increase costs or vulnerability to missiles to protect against them. Missiles and drones are a lot different from each other.

Quote
Also, just for clearity. Point defense is a general term for a fixed defensive system. Ie a system designed to secure a limited area around itself. Calling something a point defense system doesn't imply that it's good at stopping missiles, or bad at drones.
And knowing is half the battle.
Still, a pd system which works at the ranges and specs needed for drones would be a lot different than what's needed for missiles.

I would prefer to wait with weapon choice untill we get the Oculus network online and see what we're up against
Wouldn't the government know some? General idea okay.

Yeah, exactly. We're not so arrogant that we would risk the survival of our species on ourself and an unborn child.
Oh I see, totally different view on character's motivation. Happens
It's not like we're sacrificing ourself to give a random night troll time to escape.
I don't see the mermaid as a threat to us. She'd probably be grateful to us for providing a blessing that brings her closer to Nocteclaw, and since she'd probably be in the ocean she wouldn't interfere with our actions.

You will be mine Miskipie.
Okay, disturbing mental image. Unless you mean you'll bake misko into a pie and eat it.
...Why isn't that disturbing?

Bonus...
bonus...
motherfucker.
I know how to win.
Of course, I'm not telling you guys.
Judging by how you destroyed the universe, it's "kick the ball, and wherever it landed is the goalposts."

Ensure Misko's wife never existed. Then take her place in time and space.
Isn't wife perma-dead? Making you perma-dead?
...
Hmm... That DOES solve my problem. And, Perhaps I could exchange her place with you...

THIS IS GOOD PLAN. I ENDORSE.
IS GOOD PLAN.

Sweetie, your wife is perma-dead because she is not a PC. PCs can only die by angering the Great Toad or the Mighty Game Master.
OR KURTULMAK, INFERIOR KOBOLD.

Hmm. So if you are wife, ressurect, then I switch the places of you and actual wife, that makes you temporarily dead and wife alive? IS STILL GOOD PLAN.

...

Then I can slowly torture her until she surrenders your love to me once I return... I APPROVE OF MY PLAN.
If this dissolves into a full-fight you're screwed. My Bonus shall ensure continued advantage over you.

I would never harm or fight you my love.

Unless said fighting is needed to ensure you love me. Which then I will torture you to the full extent of my abilities. <3

*sigh* Not listening I see. Your abilities are far outstripped by my own.

You are a Fool, Little Kobold. And you will lose, everything.
Corai isn't a kobold this time.

Wait. Something important happened here... Misko just got out illogicked.

Let there be a moment of silence for this event....

..............
Wait what happened? I wasn't paying attention to them; there's so much fallacy here it's like background static.
I just might sig that.

(So your all agree to not being the strongest night troll just to ensure survival of our race? Not going to argue. Got bored)
Yeah, exactly. We're not so arrogant that we would risk the survival of our species on ourself and an unborn child.

Am I the only one who thinks the adventuring elf would make a good consort? Or the mage? Or someone chosen for actual skill, rather than ease of capture?
Just ask Gwen to come help. Two night trolls should be able to subdue a single sleeping elf.

Ukrainian, we're not making half a dozen finished designs in a month. We're making half a dozen quick designs so we can guess the final parameters of each ship, so we can ask which to actually design. If making the rolls is a lot of work for you, or whatever, just assume we create a virtual prototype with specs which can be reached on-budget and let us know what the government wants us to make.

You'll get one month turns, I am not going to fast-forward months, you'll get progress reports after each turn. But I am not gonna make partial turns, either. Main reason why I am gonna to penalize your for having  more than two projects because I don't want to write more than two such reports every turn At least not before I get used for that game

Also, prototype = finished ship
If you got permission to build one (should be trivial for a drone,  not so for corvette) upgrading it = starting a new project. Modernization\upgrading will be easier in most cases, but still it's a new project
Point is we can eat the penalty. We just need numbers to present to the navy so we know what we should concentrate on.

The 1st no-no for lean startups is designing a product too far before knowing what the customers want.
No we can't. We really don't want all out projects to come out worse. Besides, we know what the ministery needs. They need security and orbit to ground transport. At this point , they have nothing and they will accept prety much everything.
Again, not finished designs, quick overviews.

Railgun drone:
1. Why railgun, it's not our speciality
-80% Plastic ammunition means that railgun shots will be five times less powerfull than normal, metal counterparts
-Ammunition is persistant. Together with drones(mass production) this can form a serious problem for shipping
-Ammunition means that the drones will need to be ressuplieable.
-In a universe where drones have their own designation and ship class, Point Defense will be calibrated to account for them.
Why railgun? It's cheaper than laser.
80% of a special polymer which is meant to be able to poke through spaceships. GM would have told us if there was a problem like that. Especially since I submitted the design, with that detail, twice.
Space is big.
What makes them non-resuppliable?
Assumptions, assumptions. Assuming that there's enough combat drones for that statement to make sense, assuming such a thing would really be point defense, assuming that the hit on performance with missiles and/or increased cost would be worth it, assuming the pirates have this faux point defense...besides, I highly doubt that, with all the drones being suggested, the GM would have just left out that there's effective point defense against small targets far away and trying to avoid you (which, aside from size, is the exact opposite of a missile, which is trying to hit you and generally close at some point).

Lux Laser ship
-Lasers are energy hungry. Don't know how well that mixes with batteries. I assume not good. Besides, we're good with reactors, should use them.
You don't like railguns, you don't like lasers...what are we supposed to give the armed ships, radios that tell the enemies bad jokes?
Missiles are bad, they'll get hit hard with point defense, which is, you know, calibrated to missiles.
Non-railguns have all the issues of railguns and then some.
Other weapons probably don't exist for space combat.

I vote for the Oculus and the Valkyrie. I will soon provide a visual for the Oculus (perhaps 5 to 6 hours from now) as I perceive it.
If you want me to make other ship visuals, ask nicely  :D
I'd like to see the Hiram-I.

Incidentally, I vote for the "ask what we should make" option.
