DF Suggestions / Re: Enable people to crete their own UIs
« on: December 07, 2012, 11:02:59 am »
1 and 2 - yes. But unless the code is a total mess (and it shouldn't be as the game is more or less data driven) it should be relatively simple to implement.
How does this address your contradictions?

Quote
2. Revolution as in I think that the interfaces require an overhaul, but not necessarily from Toady's side. Maybe let others create other UIs - it's done partly anyway but in a *very* limited way I just want others to have the power to create it properly:P
I see. How on earth could Toady let them do more than they have? Look at Dwarf Therapist, DFhack, etc. There's plenty of will and way.

Quote
3. And I understand this. If You think of Dwarf Fortress - what's the first thing that you notice? The system. The incredibly complex and fun system enabling incredible amounts of emergent gameplay and such. And the system - The Dwarf Fortress is still all in his hands. Just enabling better UIs may be a way to increase the donation rate by introducing more people to Dwarf Fortress by easing the UIs.
I'm not saying - dumb down the game. I'm not saying alter it. I'm saying - maybe there are better ways to interact with a game than what we have at the moment?
Maybe. Toady's not likely to add others' work into his game, though, so don't expect him to.
As I said, people have already improved the UI with various utilities, so there's not a lot of point in designing DF to be able to have improved UI. It would probably just break said utilities.

Quote
4a. I have seen the changes and they - indeed - are big. But the question is - would they break the UI. And I think not if the UI is written well.
UI is based on the inner code. Unless you're just referring to graphics--which are already as moddable as it can really get--the UI is set deep in the code. Each time the way dwarves choose jobs changes somehow, whether by adding new ones, improving AI, whatever, the UI with assigning jobs would probably be affected, especially if it's as complex as you seem to think it should be. Trust me, it's almost always more complex than you think it will be.

4b. He can also require that all the UIs that anyone but he creates are to be in public domain or something and that he can use the code to do whatever he wants to. This way he would be able to switch to the best UI that emerges. I'm not saying also to drop the "tiles" or use graphics for everything. People will do so anyway but his new patches can introduce new letters and colors without problems...
Again, TOADY WILL NOT INCLUDE STUFF OTHER PEOPLE MAKE IN HIS MAGNUM OPUS.

This is not to convince You that I'm right. It's just so that You understand my way of thinking.

And I would love a good UI for this game:P
Alright. You have succeeded in that. Congrats.
I guess I'd like one too, but I'd rather have new, if buggy, features than an equally buggy way for people to make better UIs.

I did not continue the derail, I noticed that the other person did. Just like we're doing now.

I'm not opposed to the idea, I just like following the rules and don't like when people say factually wrong things unopposed.

Now are you going to complain about how I'm discussing the issue or are you going to discuss the issue? You seem to be so against me discussing the issue that you're actively sabotaging a thread to attack me. Not exactly, but the parallelism helps hammer the point in.

The biggest question is if neck-snapping works outside of action films.

First off, "Nobel" is the guy with the peace prize. Not exactly, but you should get what I'm saying.

Second off, this seems like more of a "researcher" than a magician.

Third off, why would it be a noble?

"I'll take the mage/planner...no I won't, I just rolled a 5 for Intelligence. Um. Are we playing with the house rule that let's us choose which rolls go to which stats?"

Well then why not colonize Mercury? Place solar panels on the side that always faces the Sun, then on the dark side you can have the colonies that mine the iron core. I mean, Mercury is basically a massive ball of iron; With that we could build fleets upon fleets of ships.
Too hot, too far from Earth.

Warp drive. Rounded donut of exotic matter spinning incredibly fast contracts spactime in front of the ship and expands spacetime behind it, with it you can go 10 times the speed of light. Provided you can generate energy equal to the mass of the Voyager probe. Resources? Not a problem when you can ferry tons of stuff from Earth to the colonies in about 2 minutes round trip.

Potentially made of exotic matter.
A problem not mentioned: Warp drives are more efficient than thought, but they still need a lot of energy.

I'll take a sigtext as well. Even though I don't have much to put in it yet. Eh, I've got a lot way too many by now.

Spoiler: Ha ha! (click to show/hide)

On the reasonable assumption that you stop this story here.... plz... --- If you wanted to do another round of story generation. I would be interested in participating if you took the most reasonable suggestion for where you want the story to go rather than the first worst idea that comes to mind.
I have to agree. even among the odd suggestions, most make a little sense on their own. This turn, for example, you combined them into a ridiculuos mish-mosh.
The actions were all kinda ridiculous to begin with.
I'll take the advice, though.

Well yelling at them probably isn't the best way to do anything more than temporarily get things moving.

Its not like screaming "FOOLISH FOOLS DO MY WILL" will be a profound turning point in how they view eachother.
It does, however, make sure that we can delay things getting worse until we get better. Besides, they both laughed, which will reduce tension in the short term at least.

FYI, I think there's a typo in the latest update, unless you meant to call the elf-child a tree "huger."

I like the idea of sending messages around in time. Lets us screw with casualty and risk time paradoxes. Fun. We can send stuff back in time an not just forward, right?

Isn't that what the creatures descended from the black-smoker prokaryotes eat? Some of them, at least?

We're playing Toomin's game here, changing as little as possible. Well, kinda. We're limiting our changes to accelerating evolution, mostly. Um...remind me, which action was your that we called cheating?
