General Discussion / Re: Russian intervention in Ukraine
« on: March 02, 2014, 10:03:50 am »
Hi, I'mGreatWyrmGold, and I'm replying to a bunch of posts.

((WHAT THE FUCK?))
Oh. Shit. I've been meaning to pay more attention to the news...
The bright side is, if Reuters is to be believed, it doesn't sound like it'll be a huge thing. Russia's keeping itself as Europe's red-headed stepchild, and obviously it sucks for the Ukraine, but at least it's not likely to turn into a world-burning confrontation.

It's complicated because Russia has nukes.
Actually, it's simpler than it seems. After all, Putin would have to be a complete idiot to use nukes on the Ukraine without provocation. Already, it's coming off badly; imagine what a couple nuclear warheads would do to Russia's international relations. Best case scenario, it's ostracized and gets embargoes from several major nations; worst case scenario, World War Three.
Now, if the Ukraine had nukes, there could be a problem...but it hasn't been so long since the Cold War that people have forgotten about mutually assured destruction, and anyways the Ukraine sent its nukes to be dismantled in Russia way back in the Nineties; it's been almost two decades since Ukraine has had a nuclear weapon in its borders.

as far as we know of,he does control some very remote places with minorities in them.
As far as we know of, he is actually a Vulcan spy.
Citations or it didn't happen.

Well shit. Looks like theres gonna be a landwar in Asia/Eastern Europe.
Joke's been made. Probably in every city where people have seen The Princess Bride.

The he referred to Putin, not my dad.
I hope this teaches you to be careful with your pronouns.

Also, this must be the first time in history that a country waited for a couple of days for the enemy to really get into place before mobilizing and saying "Hey, this is war you know!".
We're out of practice as far as real war goes.
Isn't the modern world great?

(Note: My use of "real war" is in contrast to "guerrilla war" and the like, which are more like serieses of opposing small missions than the big-battle wars everyone thinks of when they hear "war," and is not in  any way intended to glorify or promote such conflicts.)
(Note: Isn't it a bit odd to say "guerrilla war" when "guerrilla" means "little war"?)

According to Russians with no sense of humor, they're the Belarus equivalent of bread.
...I don't get it. Is that one of those insulting jokes neighboring nations tend to have about each other, if so what are they implying, and if not...then huh?

I always find it amusing how the people most willing to violate a country's sovereignty are hyper nationalists.
You say that like it's a bad thing. If you think nationalists = nazis, you're wrong.
I think he's saying it's ironic, not that nationalists are evil.

Chaoswizkid: I never said that many=majority. I merely pointed out that the idea is not absurd. When you take a government order to "defend your country", you defend their idea of what constitutes it.
...or else you're just defending your homeland, your home, your family. My father always said that the invader is at a disadvantage from that--men will fight as hard as they can and retreat less readily if they are fighting to protect their hometown than just on orders.
And the Nazis were kind of invading Russia at the time.

Also, new plan. US should support the tiny Pro-51st-State political movement in Australia, let them take power of part of the country and then park our troops there because they asked for us.
Don't be silly. Australia is already divided into states, we'd let them keep those divisions.
But yeah. Sounds like a decent enough analogy.

But Mict... they did?

Aksyonov was voted in by the Crimean parliament on Thursday after pro-Russia gunmen seized the building and as tensions soared over Crimea's resistance to the new authorities in Kiev, who took office this week.
Occupying the place and ousting the representatives. Replaced with puppet in minutes.
My first thought was "I wonder if that's a world record."
I feel ashamed.

You know, Russia could have used that thing called diplomacy. But nooooo.
Like - Gather UN security council, provide proofs that Russians in Crimea are in danger and ask for UN mission  to enter it and initiate referendum under their supervision.
Bah, UN. Who uses that for anything any more?
Note: I'm being sarcastic.

I am also afraid.
I have enough faith in Putin that he won't shoot himself in the foot badly enough to trigger World War Three. Short of nuking the Ukraine, I'm not sure what would start something major.

Fun fact: no matter the fall height, sometimes hitting the ground head-first causes the hapless Kerbonaut to bounce instead of die.
Oh, now you tell me this.

Quote
Also, did you see his face during this fall? I bet he was beaming.
He always does that.

Let's aim for a Minmus mission or two. Perhaps two single seaters maybe half a day apart. They'll meet up in orbit around Minmus for a chat about where they want to land. They can each pick their favorite flat spot.
Craft 1: Liftoff and orbit Kerbin. Make a maneuver mode and set you sights on Minmus. Make another maneuver node about halfway along that trajectory to tweak it so you intercept Minmus.
Craft 2: Liftoff and orbit Kerbin. See where craft 1 is and if possible make and execute a maneuver to intercept Minmus before craft 1 gets into Minmus SOI. Adjust the intercept halfway there if needed.
Craft 1: Put into stable orbit around Minmus.
Craft 2: Follow in Craft 1's footsteps. Put into stable orbit.
Plan noted. Now to figure out how to design a Minmusshot.

Though... Slog and Goombess both seem trustworthy (though for Slog that's more because he had the disposition of a recently adopted puppy)...
Would you trust a puppy with keeping house?

I am not inclined to believe the lies of the Chief (or whoever wrote the Mercenary guideline thing.) People for the Ethical Treatment of Mercenaries, unite!
Well, one of our mercenaries has been pretty well mindless, one has been a fangirl of the enemy, neither has had a chance to backstab us, and both had someone trustworthy watching them the whole time. And we have a pretty crappy sample size.

Remind me, why are we running with Windirection on an antimagic floor?
It doesn't need a roll.

Go to Greens and inspect surroundings. We found a Soul Star there and a FFS tip mentioned we should pay better attention when finding a Soul Star...
I don't think it's a good idea to keep the illborn exchange in weapon form, as I'm pretty sure using it will drain soul charge and it should probably be kept for desperate situations.  That and the fact that as it is at 79% soul charge, it's almost to the point of oversoul (if I remember correctly, I may be wrong on that).
I vote we shift the illborn exchange back to normal for now, and re-equip the bartering ram.
Did we ever get Cherish to hold the golden star? With the shifts we now have a conclusive way to check if its hers or not.

Drop off Icicle Fury in Storage. Pick up the Skill Tree.

Do we want to try using the Festive reagents for a skill?
Anyone have any idea how we could try making a "making things" skill?

Lucien isn't going to be around. Sanure did say a while ago he's going to be dead shortly. He's not an option.
...So? When did my argument come within earshot of Lucien?

I'll handle my own recruitment, feeding my people, housing my people and everything else to do with them on my own. It won't cost the village anything we'll stay out of your way and leave you to your own devices whatever happens.
Somehow, I don't think you understand what you're saying. It seems to me like you're saying you're going to make your own whole entirely separate village. Before we even have one village up.
How the hell do you epect to do that?

Quote
Every time I've made a plan for something you've argued against it and whats happened? I've been correct. I haven't at any time said your idiots or stupid I've said in my opinion this is right. As I've said many times before. You have your opinion and I have mine. The fact that my opinion does not match yours is not an insult. It's simply an opinion. Acting separate from the village doesn't mean leaving it means I'll be handle my people myself without weighing the rest of you down.
Look, you may have been right sometimes, but you have not been right every time, and saying that a history of not always being wrong means your arguments are right and mine are wrong implies that my arguments are always wrong, which implies that I am stupid since I keep arguing them and not following your orders, which is an insult you idiot.
Worse, most of the time that you've been right is because the game has been ignoring logic, like it would be if you're right this time and you get enough possible migrants that you can be choosy. And that's ignoring all the arguments we've been having about somewhat subjective matters (like if you should share your plans IC or expect us to ask you in the middle of battle when we don't know you have a plan) and you can always claim you were in the right.

I'm sick of dealing you and sick of arguing with you. This game isn't any fun at all.

I'm not trying to play my own game with my own village. I'm not getting much alternative but to do things on my own because without fail every single thing I have tried to do has been rejected immediately.
1.
If the rest of you don't agree then I'll handle feeding them and covering the costs on my own and we'll leave you all to your own devices. I have no problem with leaving you all to your own devices and dealing with mine on my own.
I believe I need to do this and so I'm going to do it with or without your help. I'd prefer to do it with it but if the rest of you disagree then thats fine I'll do it on my own because I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it. I have listened to what you've said and I intend to look for a way to get what I want in a way that doesn't harm the village if it's at all possible but until it happens I don't know if it is or not.
Explain those.
2. "Every single thing [you] try to do has been rejected immediately"? No, not true. We've agreed with you sometimes. And as for the rest of the time...well, if everyone was usually arguing against my ideas, I'd be reconsidering my ideas.

Quote
So it's become a case of either work my own way or hand over my character to be controlled by everybody else.
You've damn near asked us to hand our characters' control over to you more than once. To say nothing of how you're taking over our village's relations with other villages.

Alexandria, two people have said they're not having fun and the reason is largely due to you. I'm not going to ask you to do anything but think about that.

This crap always happens
Yes. Last time I tried to run a datesime game people wanted to murder people and build nuclear weapons. I think this genre of game is not well known on bay12.
Or they're not familiar with real dating, so they try to make it something familiar.
Yes, I am aware that I insulted myself. I take that as evidence towards my theory.

Eh this is pretty clearly a parody, specially considering the Lunatic Asylum thing and FFS personally pointed out to me that he didn't even bother putting ISG in the title.
And that it's freeform running it.

Don't be sad Wyrm, I was playing once and I found out that my colonial Jool craft didn't have any parachutes on it.
...Jool? The gas giant? Why were you even trying to land on it?
I meant the Joolian system. Laythe to be more precise.
Ah. Well, that makes more sense.
Well, you're not alone.

There's a reason I usually put parachutes on first.

I didn't say godlike, again your putting words in my mouth. I said a fighting chance, nothing more. A pair of smiths and ore I can hopefully find means better weaponry and armor which boosts our fighting ability and that of any people we bring in.
Well...consider what happened. Us, several highly-trained individuals, several with magic, had trouble against a gnoll patrol. How many men, even armed and armored with steel we get from somewhere, would it take for a proper attack to end with anything but an utter slaughter?

And again you're resorting to being a bit of a jerk, utterly self-absorbed and convinced that the rest of us are idiots and that your character leaving is at all a threat. Go ahead, go. I'd be glad.

4134
-1 to all suggestions of placing unloyal mercenaries in charge of the house. They would most likely rob us and leave.

I'd call it less "graverobbing" the characters and more "saving them from oblivion".

When did I mention large numbers or infinity?
You didn't, but asking why you couldn't recruit as many smiths as you wanted without impacting your recruitment of anyone else kind of suggests you weren't considering the limits of recruitment.

And seriously. We're not a wealthy city, we're not a major town, we're not even an average village. We're a dozen people squatting on gnoll land, next to a cursed sea, with barely enough houses for ourselves. Who the hell will want to move here? This ain't Dwarf Fortress.

You already all saw the first Gnoll patrol and it's difficult. If thats only a patrol what do you think an attack would be? I'm sorry if we can't fully sustain it though I think I can manage it but it's a risk I'm willing to take.
A full attack would be more than we could take, no matter how many smiths we had. What makes you think we'll find large amounts of iron ore before any kind of valuable metal? Why are you so convinced that giving a bunch of people metal arms and armor will elevate our martial ability to godlike levels? And how are we going to convince these people to come here?

In short, they barged into someone elses' thread, blew up the city it was set in, hijacked the thread and stole all the characters.
To be fair, the game was already more or less dead.

I've spent over a week and half of my KSP LP trying to save Jeb. Well, he just crashed into Kerbin and died.

This makes me sad. And want to share my KSP sadness.
Kerbin Sadness P...um...something amusing.
