Yeah, this game is in the playtesting stage, where every bug is exploited and fixed.

44477
Name: Gweg Kenson
Race: Half-Ogre
Gender: Male
Traits: Overspecialised (+1 to rolls involving combat; -1 to rolls involving non-sword weapons or not directly related to combat); Moral (tries to avoid breaking laws and moral obligations if possible)
Occupation/Role: Mercenary
Alignment: Pragmatic Good
Magic: No, not for lack of interest

Appearance: Big, looks like an unusually small, quick, and smart ogre.
Age: 15
Background: Gweg was a child who never knew his parents. He didn't need to, as it turns out. By the time his memories begin, he was living on his own, stealing bread and supplementing it with rats. By the time he was 7 (or so), he was almost as big as a full-grown human, and got conscripted into a noble's army for a holy war. He hated the war but the faith soaked in. He resolved to try to live a better life, and since has become one of the best mercenaries around. Sadly, everything else has suffered, all but his morals. He's tried to keep them from slipping away with the rest of his life, but slowly is growing aware of how this might soon become impossible....

-----

If any of this is unacceptable, let me know ASAP. Please.

And to think this is all because I tried to steal nukes from Misko.
THAT IS WHY YOU DON'T DO THAT.

So everybody, this is what happens when misko drops a madness bomb in a bay12 thread. It should have worn off now, so resume your-regularly scheduled RTD people.
Wait, madness wears off us? Wow. Maybe next the tragedy will wear off of Sophocles.

why?

Found this topic. Read the old topic. Love what I read. Would like to reserve a spot, but I'll give my spot away to someone from the original list should they express desire to play again.

EDIT: Meant to also put forth a suggestion. I thought about having groups of people working on the same thing could get bonuses to reflect working together. You could reduce how many rolls you have to do aswell; for instance if 3 people work on a hut that takes 3 successful work days/men to complete, then you roll 1 die with a +3 modifier (or whatever seems appropiate for a d20) as to a complete success, or whether it may need finishing the next day (which could be an automatic success).
Just thought some macro-management could reduce the amount of work the gm has to put in, which is always a good thing.
Aid seems like a good thing, and you're reserved.

Alright, mesor, Caerwyn, and TopHat have reserved spots. I'll take two or three more.
Fuckin' RESERVE.
Will you provide a link to the new thread, or just trust us to find it?
Reserved, and I'll link to the new thread.

Of an important note, only bezerkers can move twice while hasted. You cannot exchange an "action" for a movement. Please resubmit turns [specifically this goes to Grek.
Can they, say, attack twice? Or move and use a special ability? Or use two special abilities?

I've lost more dwarves to blood loss and suffocation than decapitation or bisection. Please be more specific.

DF Suggestions / Re: Adventure Mode Stories
« on: October 25, 2012, 08:04:07 pm »
I think the idea is that you could make an adventurer with a pre-generated quest.
Think of it like this metaphor I just thought of and am starting to question: Batman started out trying to avenge his parents...or keep it from happening again...or something like that, it's been a while. He moved on to trying to rid Gotham of crime. Doing whatever to his parents was the original story, everything else was random things you decided to do along the way.

HE COULD GET ANYTHING OUT OF THE WAY FOREVER IN A MATTER OF DAYS
IT'S LIKE SAYING YOU SHOULD BUILD A GIGANTIC STACK OF MANY VARIOUS PIECES OF ALL DIFFERENT SIZES AND MATERIALS BY ONLY PLACING THEM WHERE THEY WILL BE SUPPORTED BY OTHER PIECES
OF COURSE, ONCE THE STACK GETS BIG ENOUGH, THERE ARE MANY PLACES WHERE PIECES COULD GO, SO YOU DO THEM ARBITRARILY
I LIKE MY METAPHOR A BIT MORE

In a matter of days Toady could NOT add the army arc, kingdom mode, or about anything that would really improve the gameplay. Music, however, is an exception to that.
I'm not convinced that music is important, at all.

Quote
1. There is community already adding music to the game. You wanna put 'em out of the job hobby?

Of course. I already explained that just because you can download an addon to fix/improve something doesn't mean it shouldn't go into the vanilla game.
Of course not, it just moves it down the priority list. Especially since, say, NW_Kohaku might love Toady's new music but Putnam could hate it.

Quote
Quote
2. You can use internet to play any music you want, if you don't own any music in your harddrive.

Fair point, but it would still be nice to have it in the game.
So what? Have an easy "Put your own music here" folder or force everyone to listen to a different piece of music instead of the current one?

Quote
Quote
3. We are not talking about a game which is complete and lacks things like sound effects and music.

I still play a fortress from several releases back (before vampires and minecarts) and even back then I considered it complete enough to be playable and fun. It's pretty good as it is now. Sure, it would be absolutely fantastic with hill dwarves and multi threading, but that's a long way off and simple things like music can really make a game great or terrible.
Is it complete? No. Are there still features to be added and bugs to be fixed? Of course. Is this argument relevant? I doubt it. Simple things like music CAN make a game great or terrible, but most coming to DF will make their decision based on the features or the graphics, and not the music.

Quote
Quote
4. This is a roguelike (kind of) and in all roguelikes things like graphics and music are secondary.

So? The point of this thread is to convince Toady that music should be more of a priority.
If anything, this convinces Toady that we can't argue like civilized people...
And I include myself in that statement. I'm not sorry about what I've said, but I'm very sorry about how I said it.

Ahem, don't put words in my digital mouth. Easy healing magic would break the game, but with some form of proper balance it would be just another strategic choice.

Thats what I said.
Similar, maybe, but the way you phrased it made it sound like you thought I thought healing magic would unbalance the game, no ifs ands or buts.

Quote
Quote
Yeah, it is. Easy steel isn't certain, nor is it a guarantee of anything. If healing magic with no consequences was added, it would be both certain and a guarantee of "Send me your delimbed, your broken-boned, your dying. Everything will be okay."
Neither is healing magic. You can near guarentee easy steel. You cannot even guarentee a world will generate with healing magic.
First off: How often is the flux reader on the embark finder accurate, and how often do you find iron ore? Second off, if you can get a healer, and the game is much easier due to it, the late game will be drastically changed. I don't think that all endgames should be the same by any means, but if it's a difference between one major industry fed by a couple others being the difference between life and death for dozens of dwarves and only losing dwarves who don't make it to a cleric in time...that's not the good kind of difference.

Quote
if there was a healer out in the battlefield, all 4 could possibly have been saved

No that would have just saved an additional Dwarf.
You know a few things dwarves often die of? Blood loss and suffocation. Know what healing magic could save dwarves from if it could save them before those killed the dwarves? Arrows, hammers, spears...pretty much everything short of an axe or a lightsaber.

Quote
Quote
Randomly getting a world with healing magic or not is not difficulty, it's randomness

It is randomness yes, in the sense that it randomly generated an entire world in which healing magic exists.

If a world is generated with "Healing magic" then it is part of the world. It is as part of the world as everything else is.
Hunky-dory. That's like saying a game is balanced because everyone has a chance to be a 20th level wizard and not the 1st level peasant everyone else is.

Quote
Quote
What I'm suggesting is that healing magic would of course make the game easier

Yes but how much easier? certainly not "Easy Steel" easier. Not Trap maniac easier (even after it is fixed).

Where exactly does this "Easier" lie?
It depends.
We're working on deciding how to make it not break the game to the point where healing magic is the new danger room.

Quote
but it does at least make the game a little harder, in that it's got a very high value, attracting more invaders
The best kind of resource would be one that is greater then its worth.
Pronoun issues. Greater than what's worth?

Quote
Quote
It would be fun to have magic be randomly generated, and each time with different drawbacks and benefits

It really will be.

It is why I am trying to deal with balance for balance sake shoving its way into this simulation game.
More like "Balance for fun's sake."

Quote
Quote
Ok then, so the enemies get it too.  So I guess you're agreeing with me?
No I am definately not agreeing with you there. I know enemies will get it too in that situation however that wouldn't be a "balance" so to speak because the value of healing for you is much greater then that for the enemy.

How many times would you really care if a dangerous enemy goes back to heal at base? never.

How many times does a truely dangerous enemy get away after doing real damage? never.

In otherwords it is a non-balance as you define it. It is like Dungeons and dragons where things like "Once per day" abilities are different for enemies as they are for you. An enemy doesn't have to preserve their power for future challenges that day and thus they are free to use it nonstop.

In this case the issue is that you either lose or you do not lose. If you lose then healing didn't help. If you do not lose then healing you do not care about. Enemies do not whittle down and they do not lose competence and the few units that do not repopulate are the kind that either die or do not die. Thus enemy assaults are no tougher with healing magic as they are without healing magic.

Think of it this way. Would a goblin siege be tougher knowing that right on the side of the map there is a small army of Legendary Surgeons and antisceptic scrubs? Of course not.
Of course, it's different if the medics healed the greenskins in the field...just as bad, but in the opposite direction. Goblins can heal themselves in combat? Great, now I need to keep a healer around so I can too. Both sides are broken =/= balance. It certainly =/= Fun.

Saw the title: How is that possible?

Read the thread: GoobaGeek, you've done it again. That's insane in a good, dwarfy way. However, to play the required wet blanket, give a thought to Fortress Mode. Husks should be made non-overwhelming before being made stronger. Just my opinion.

Moving fortress parts are planned, so I won't dwell on the dumbwaiter (or the underimplemented feature you justify it with), but the drills sound quite neat. Maybe not practical, and probably a bit past the 1400s, but neat.

Any other thoughts?

I'm quite frankly amazed at how many people are saying Toady should just put off music for another ten years, despite how he could get it out of the way forever in a matter of days. It's like saying you should build a house's frame, add flooring, paint the walls, furnish it, move in, and THEN add shingles to the roof. I'd glady have the next version of DF pushed back for a while fir music to be added, I literally can't comprehend why everyone is saying it should be postponed just so that the bugs get fixed RIGHT NAO.
You're suggesting we paint the walls before adding the roof. Bugs are more important than music. Interface is more important than music. With so many players who turn of DF music and solutions individual players can take to listen to different music, I fail to see how music is a high priority. It's certainly not the shingles on the roof, and we're already in the house.

Quote
And as in for whether I have experience writing music, I can't claim to have much experience with. However, I was under the impression that Toady plays an instrument (can't think of the name off the top of my head) and I'd be willing to bet that he already knows a few good songs that he could record and then add.
He could. Does he need to? No. Does he WANT to? If he did, he probably would have already. As you say, it's not rocket science.

And GreatWyrmGold, almost every time you post I become more convinced that you're a troll. Time and time again people have told you to stop being so harsh, listen to others' posts, and stop dismissing suggestions as being worthless, stupid, and nothing but spam. And then every single time you've shrugged off what they said and convinced yourself that like the thread, they're just stupid.

I don't know why I'm bothering to say this, as you'll more than likely not even listen, but please try to stop coming across as a thoughless jerk. Your excuse is always "I'm blunt", and you are. That's not why people are pissed. It's your rude remarks that accomplish nothing and just anger whoever they're directed at that annoy everyone.
I try to listen. You are guilty of all you accuse me of, too. That makes this whole thing harder. Why not explain why music is more important than bugs or features? I'm very interested in your answer.

Goomba: Why must you strawman me? A suggestion which would add a little to the game and which Toady has been able to but has not done ever since DF was released, and which Toady hasn't ever mentioned, is not the same as a detailed analysis of a feature Toady has expressed interest in doing eventually. Many of the things mentioned as differences were all I was criticizing. Was I rude? Probably. Was I wrong? Seems not. Oh, and PC, water, and neither.

I don't see how having an extra couple of songs (even say 20 songs) repeating a couple thousand times is any less annoying than having a single song. If you want different music just turn off the music and play your own.
Agreed. The difference is merely technical.

And, once again, the music haters are keeping this on the top of the list.

Let's do an experiment. Hey, Damiac, u r a troll. Now don't respond. See the issue I have? I am being called a TROLL, and you expect me to stay silent rather than explaining myself? Well...unlikely for most, less likely for me.
