Large as in thick? Yeah, that could help.Actually, platform boots could be useful against larger enemies...Or with large soles...How would that help?
This suggestion is worthless and a waste of time! I am personally offended that anybody even would suggest it, let along discuss it... actually I have an ideaI assume the third paragraph was paraphrasing me? A. Just for the record, I said nothing like the first and no one else did either. B. I was saying that there are such things as bad suggestions. There are. Thus, you can't say there aren't.
When you insult the poster and the post, then try to join in on the discussion afterward, you only prove his accusations that you are a negative nancy...
hei ya no wut wood b g8? dorfs trnin into kats. LOL. toadee must ad NAO!
He didn't write anything at all like that. You know all you accomplish with crap like that is to make yourself look bad, and to bump the thread you apparently detest so much.
One thing Toady could do is have more things post to a log for SoundSense (or any other utility) to read. There's probably all sorts of events that don't currently output any text that could be taken advantage of.A. SFX could be interesting, but I think that's a topic that needs much in-depth discussion on how it would work.
Overall, though, there's not much point in Toady implementing something that's already been pretty well implemented by somebody else. I mean, look what happened with Notch.
I mean, Toady isn't the type to half-ass stuff and leave it all abstracted when he could...not.I think that this idea will be doomed WHEN Toady improves conversations.
What do you mean?
No, I mean if I create a character and can't hear what's being said, it reduces conversations to being just, "Can I trade with you? No? Got any quests?"Stuff like this makes you painfully aware of that distance between character and player.
Do you mean if for example you create a character with no social awareness, but like to imagine that he's suave, and then he keeps doing badly in social situations and it jars your sense of immersion? I don't think that's a problem, so it's probably not what you mean...
It goes with the whole "imagination" thing people like to go on about here. No computer generated random conversation can ever seem real. So a generic description lets you make it up yourself.Again, 0.34.11 =/= 1.0.01. How can you imagine things if not given all the requisite information DF has bristling at its virtual fingertips? After all, games far less complex than DF generate acceptable conversations. Do you not think Toady could do the same?
I mean, the goofy stuff they say in conversation really makes you painfully aware of the distance between player and character, you know? Not to mention that the character is a little @...
You play a character. The character isn't you. There's no first person perspective in dwarf fortress adventures, since the skills and (soon) the personality isn't yours, but the character's. You make the choices, but the rest is the character. It's all 3rd person, as in most other RPGs.Yes, because the game says "Urist McAdventurer slashes the goblin in the left hand and the severed part goes flying off in an arc," not "You slash the goblin in the left hand and the severed part goes flying off in an arc."
I find repetition and unimaginative replies to be far more immersion breaking than the fact that character I play doesn't represent the person I am.Now =/= end.
Leaving room for interpretation is a big aspect of DF and I think that gives you less immersion breaking moments. It seems natural that the conversations follow the same line.I see adventure and fortress mode differently. Fortress mode gives you tons of info and leaves plenty up to interpretation. Adventure mode is more stingy with what it tells you, but explains it better.

Yet, it's what we're doing. Right now.Build the rules up from the groundnot trying to hate here but, thats a tall order.
No need to rebuild them all anyway some of them are fine as they are.Cool. I'd like to see...oh, wait. I'd like them to see your latest version.
But the committees are more or less a way to adjust rules for systems to make them more fitting anyway.
I have a rough system for smithing weapons and armor with metals as well as a list of all the kinds of weapons and armor.
I'll post them shortly I just need to make some minor adjustments.
Or with large soles...How would that help?
