DF Suggestions / Re: Plant Oil As Lubricant
« on: October 22, 2012, 07:04:35 pm »
I don't know how sticky or viscous it needs to be, but I'd imagine that, at a minimum, some unpleasant procedurally generated stuff would be. In any case, honey would be better than oil, no? Therefore, it makes sense to have a progression of "Severely hurts your clinging abilities" to "Slightly impairs your clinging abilities" to "Helps you cling."
Try thinking about the ration of adhesive-covered surface to body mass - you'd need some damn good glue to stick to the wall. That's why a gecko can run up a window, but you won't be dooing that anytime soon.
Actually, geckos walk on walls due to various electromagnetic forces in the ends of microscopic hairs called setae. These are capable of holding humans, if you made enough artificial setae.
Yeah, they aren't actually using glue - but the same principle applies: The force/surface ratio is way too high with humans.
I'm pretty sure the artificial setae would let one climb up a wall. Either that, or everything I've read about them has mislead me.
Still, I'd gladly accept that neither real materials nor real climbing techniques would allow this, if you'll accept that some such result should be possible by modding in absurd numbers on a progression from "oily" to "honeyey".

The main issue with trying to balance healing magic is that there's nothing precious for it to cost.  I would think you could require expensive tools, and expensive reagents, maybe items crafted out of gold, platinum, etc.  But as we know, that stuff isn't really all that rare, and fortresses are outrageously wealthy quite quickly.

Would 1,000,000 dwarfbucks be a fair cost to a full heal? It'd be worth it to save your legendary axelord, but not so much for your dabbling wrestler.  I think that's the direction to look in, not some easy to obtain resource, like blood or cheesemakers.  I would think attaching a dwarfbuck cost to each spell also means you can track the value of magic used, and then use that to attract powerful magic enemies.  Maybe over time the "attractiveness" would fall a bit, so if you only use magic once a year or so, you won't attract legions of horrors.
There's more ways than direct material costs to balance magic. You could also reduce benefits or cause more notable costs. Why don't you check earlier in the thread.
For instance, there could be limits to how much it could be used--only ten times a year per priest, maybe--so healing the warriors after the first big siege of the year might mean you'll lose your legendary miner when a forgotten beast rips his arm off. Or magic could cost things that matter. Our imagination is the limit while it's still in the suggestions subforum!

Explaining that you believe its something better left for later is a reasonable, and civil response.
Toady shouldn't really have to work on the music too. Let the other guys do it.
Seriously, you guys are suggesting MUSIC?!?! I play with DF muted most of the time, so I'd rather see those 3 days spent doing something to improve game play, or at least UI. So many things we could suggest, and you suggest...music?

-----

It amazes me that the most some people ever contribute to the SUGGESTION forum are comments shooting down someone else's ideas...
hei ya no wut wood b g8? dorfs trnin into kats. LOL. toadee must ad NAO!

You, however, seem completely incapable of independent thought. The most ridiculous suggestion is better than no suggestion. I'm glad you're at least smart enough to have realized my comment was directed at you. It shows that maybe one day, likely after this game is finished, you might come up with an idea.
A bad, ridiculous, time-wasting, or otherwise unuseful suggestion is worse than no suggestion, if only because it crowds out the more useful suggestions and crowds up the subforum.
And "incapable of independent thought?" Try "didn't get here for a few pages." And I have come up with ideas, good and bad, and sometimes incredibly detailed...say, the time I came up with an idea for every sphere in a biome form.
I am blunt. I. Am. NOT. Dumb.

I tottaly can imagine the Amazing DF Procedural Ambient Generator with winds and rivers on the surface, and some darkish chords underground, and some evil laugh and screams near HFS, and with a lot of reverb, and with taking into account the surroundings, and all other things, but it's just too much work for Toady.
Agree with all but the logic. It doesn't improve the game enough to be worth Toady's time.

DF Suggestions / Re: The Edification of a Dwarven Language
« on: October 22, 2012, 06:42:06 pm »
Quote
Language doesn't equal thought, but thought equals language.
Define language, thought, and talking ?
You can think, and not be able to talk. You cannot REALLY talk without thinking.
Well, it depends on what do you call "thinking"...and "talk".
A language will reflect the thought patterns of the speakers. A language of people who never consider violence won't have words for wars and such, for a simplistic instance.

Huge doors make perfect sense when you take into account the other fantasies of the setting. Dwarves have near exclusive access to 1-3 untapped ecosystems loaded with resources ripe for plundering, letting them better equip themselves for k-selection, and they measure the value of a settlement almost solely on the wealth it produces and displays. A city might become capital in 10 years or less with fewer than one twentieth the population of the current capital simply by exporting enough wealth.  Dwarves tend to suffer techno worship, developing the finest and most complicated traps and alloys while neglecting simple and effective weapons that can be produced outside the dwarven traditional image. High fantasy dwarves are haughty and distant, perfectly willing to neglect the other races if they can be certain they are better than them. Or they tend to be. I always thought of df as more low fantasy then high. What better show of superiority then a bronze door that would take a giant to close, and a simple wooden ram to open?
A door that can actually be operated by normal means?
The general point is valid.

So are we agreeing to save these for the moving fortress arc? That way Toady can tackle a mountain when he's ready to.
Sure.

60% voted aye, 13% nay. The motion carries.

What rules do you think could be kept? Everyone can choose one they like, and we'll vote on which we'll keep and which we'll chuck.
I like the mining rules.

Volcano island. Main export: Liquid stone.

Specialist: NO ELVES. Seriously Wtf.
Explain how we would export liquid stone and how we would avoid war with the Steampunk British Empire, and we could consider that.
Elven specialists are allowed?
