Quite close, and I forgot you haven't got an automatically zooming high tech interface. Just suppose one of your crewmembers is really good with binoculars.
Binoculars? Do you really mean that we're like several kilometers away from that ship?
They sneaked up on you by hiding on a local planetoid(which was suprisingly close to the flightroute).  They're about 30 kilometers away, possibly a bit more or less. The fighters are much closer though, and closing in fast.

So yeah, some really good space binoculars.
Oh what. Space is not an ocean. We don't need to see the whites of their eyes to fire them (30 kilometers in space is nothing). Unless we only have visual sensors (which is completely idiotic because we're in space), there was absolutely no way for them to sneak up on us due to radiation and stuff. Finally, planets tend to orbit their suns. That means that unless the 'flight route' (whatever the hell that means IN SPACE) is system-wide, they would have to miss their prey for a large part of the year.

How does FTL work, by the way? Why did we slug along on STL speeds, anyway? And what happened to that merchant?

Meh, PPE'd.
A couple if those were mistakes/humorously-intentioned excuses by the GM, the pirates were using the planetoid as cover. Weren't we going there?

Also, it bugs me when people use "sector" to refer to an arbitrary section of space. A sector is a part of circle defined by two radii.

I have to say, I rather disagree with the undead stuff, and find it rather out of place in a live action series about what happens after the apocalypse. Also, Slyv's name is spelled with an L, not an I. :P

"Let's just call the police for a prison transport. I'd rather not deal with this guy again."

Tomcat pulled out a cellphone zipped in his front right jacket pocket. He dialed the number for the police headquarters, "This is Tomcat. I have the bomber from the hospital bombing that happened about 20 minutes ago. Could you send a police transport to pick this guy up?" He paused for a moment, awaiting a response. They wanted a location to pick him up at. Tomcat looked around for landmarks and read them out.

((Heh. I forgot that this is semi-freeform RP.))
"It wasn't a bombing! I just accidentally set some stuff on fire...Oh, and FYI, 'inflammable' means it burns!"

Wouldn't that ruin mods?
And wouldn't that require craptons of code for every little thing that can happen to a dwarf, from missing teeth to scars to artifact golden warhammers to missing fingers to glumprong splints to emerald-dyed pig tail cloaks to gouged eyes to spilt guts to...the list of potential modifiers goes on and on.

And most importantly...wouldn't that deprive us of the utility of imagination? If you play DF without using your imagination, you're missing out.

DF Suggestions / Re: Vector based font
« on: October 04, 2012, 04:39:23 pm »
Fairly well.

They'd have to be traced by hand, but that little bit of extra effort will turn into an image that works at all resolutions. (And making new vector graphics from scratch will probably take the same amount of time as tracing)
So, instead of modifying a few pixels in a JPEG or some such, a tileset maker would need to trace their 12x16 or whatever designs, then vectorfy them?

An advantage of vector-based graphics would be that it's easier to make large amounts of pictures derived from a base picture, eg. dwarves with different tools or different pieces of clothing. Conceivably the computer could replace clothing and tools in a base picture to generate dwarves with an appropriate appearance on demand. Changing the color of a particular element (eg. a piece of clothing) would be trivial, no matter how convoluted or split up the shape.

It's probably technically possible to have the computer compose pictures of forgotten beasts, based on the raw description, when we supply the body parts (probably not suited for map icons though, but rather for descriptions).
The part about dwarven graphics requires graphics, which Toady has not enabled by default. I'm willing to bet that Toady's more interested in making vanilla, ASCII DF great than adding some probably-lengthy code to make a few pixels for graphics users.
And while procedurally generated FB graphics might be cool... well, it's probably harder than you think, and don't you remember how freaky they can be?

That frontier settlements would start with economies essentially the same as towns'. At the start, dwarves should work because they were told to and because it'll help them survive. Later on, an economy would come into play, but not until everyone has their needs met, or close to it.

My biggest problem with that would be that if the economy came to play only later on in the game, someone should at least keep track of how much labor has been done and by whom. You can't just mint coins and divide them equaly to everybody. I mean, you could, but you'd expect the settlers who have been there from the begginning and have been working almost constantly since the fundation of the fort would get upset if everything they've done was ignored and only now they would start getting paid.

My point is, they should at least be a little aware that they are the ones who build the fortress and transformed it into something habitable, safe and profitable. In fact, the original seven dwarves would likely become almost mythical figures in the eyes of the general dwarven population by that point.
I'm not sure about the nigh-mythical figure thing, but some sort of behind-the-scenes thing keeping track of credit makes sense.

I think that, at the beginning, dwarves should do what's required and requested of them. Once more dwarves show up, a real economy and such can come into play, but at first dwarves should assume that the stuff the player's telling them to do is in their best interest. Otherwise, dwarves would likely go, "Why should I build this pump when we don't even have stone?" and miss that the pump is to pierce an aquifer.

...Or just when renovating an aboveground fortress.
I've seen plenty of magma crabs, but none have ever attacked. I'd consider the possibility of a conspiracy, but Bay12 isn't that organized.

Other people mentioned turning things like the current tilesets into vector-based graphics. How well would this work?

Agreed.

Also, why "in excess of XX.XXX%"? It would make more sense to say "in excess of XX%%" or "approximately XX.XXX%."
