Roll To Dodge / Re: You are the villain--An RTD/Suggestion Type Game.
« on: September 23, 2012, 05:26:38 pm »
[6] You get a long, itemised list. Gist of it is what was given in the last post. More specifics: Fred, Jim, Ashley, Elpis, and Caroline are in the hospital, still recovering (burns are worse on those who are still 100% meat and sane); Christiana and Britney sustained minor burns; and Gertrude was inside at the time. Your single hen was scared but unharmed. Damage costs wil probably be in the thousands, if the contractors don't fix anything except the explosion's damage.
The bots have begun repair, but as they consist of two miners, a logger, a carpenter, a crude android missing a leg, three very crude and small robots that mostly follow random people around and occasionally demand some of Jim's time in repairing them, and a general-purpose android missing a head, progress has been...slow.
Seriously? You're building ANOTHER big heat ray? Fine. HR-8 [5] is made fairly quickly. This pretty much tires you out.

DAY 10 OF VILLAINY COMPLETE

You wake up. Your burns are sore, but other than that you're fine. Christiana and Britney have returned, and are horrified that you built another big heat ray. Breakfast is good, but a bit dry. Britney's under stress.

NINJEDIT:

Get working on a Genetic Splicing and Cloning Machine.
Also, try and make another robotic arm and leg, we'll add those later.

[3] You build the machine after reading up on the literature of genetic engineering, and install it in one of the basement rooms near the laboratory. You decide to commandeer one of the other nearby empty rooms for storage of experiments, test subjects, H2SO4, etc. [6] The new arm and leg are so great, you can't wait to put them on! Starting with the arm...huh, self-surgery is even harder one-armed.

What will you do now, O Mad One?

That could be a neat addition. I'd like to see evolution of new breeds of animals, if not new species, during the lifetime of a fortress.

Sorry. I guess that the single-character RTDs have a completely different timescale.

As I've said, if you want to anyone can post an action. Right now, we could use actions from Jess and Rob.

Nothing. Same that you and I do.
HA HA HA!

What would Urist do in a modern-day office?

DF Suggestions / Re: Dynasty and Last/Clan Names
« on: September 23, 2012, 05:01:39 pm »
In my opinion, clans should not always be a born-into-one-and-you're-done. Perhaps that should normally be the case, but heroes can become members of more prestigious clans; maybe changing clans is as common as changing jobs; maybe one changes clans only by marriage. It should probably vary some from civ to civ.
In that case, the idea of a House rather than a Clan fits it better. "Clans" have a stronger sense of family and genetics/lineage, a House is more flexible.
Maybe that is a better word to use.

[snipped]
The general idea is sound. Why should individual atoms work differently than whole scads of atoms?
Issues of scale. For example: I have no issues with individual atoms, or even small compounds, entering my bloodstream. I would not, however, like to find out what happens if an entire cat made it's way in there.
If your bloodstream was big enough, it wouldn't matter. Besides, the analogy is faulty--a better analogy might be comparing what happens if some weird quantum effect happens to an electron and asking why that couldn't happen to or affect a person.
But my bloodstream isn't big enough, that's the point. Quantum effects don't scale up to our everyday, classical-mechanics scale. And we should be thankful for that. 9 out 10 times, the answer to "what would happen if X did scale up like that?" is "the universe as we know it wouldn't exist".
And even if I accept your premise, what about when the effects of quantum thingies affect the macroscopic world, a la the exact thought experiment we were talking about?
They only do so in a statistical sense. That's the big flaw in the quantum-cat scenario.
What about when the quantum-level effects of a handful of atoms affected the macroscopic world, most crudely via computers doing something if sensors they are hooked up to detect something? Which is pretty much what Schrodinger's Cat is...
Take out the cat, and after an hour the flask is half shattered and half unshattered, because no one has observed the atom's decay or any of its effects. Is this essentially correct, and if not where does the flaw in my reasoning lie?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is iron worth it?
« on: September 23, 2012, 04:58:02 pm »
Go straight for steel. Iron is only a tiny bit better then bronze for most purposes.
I've heard that iron is WORSE than bronze.

"Victor asks , were would Daren be? "
Put armor and coat back on then look for a way to sneak in
Your armor and coat are already back on, I assumed Victor wasn't an idiot or a yeti.

Reincarnate as something
[4] You reincarnate as a Martian flat cat.

/sing Hero w/ Bonnie Tyler
[1] Bonnie Tyler pops out and starts singing Hero. You sheepishly join in.

READ FORM
GET BACK HOME
DESTROY CABLES IF THEY GET IN THE WAY

[6] You read the form several times. It's an application for The Macropolis Patrol. Among other things, it asks for a codename, any criminal background, powers, and important notes about your "origin story." Weirdos. On the downside, as you read it through a few times, memorizing it, you get a paper cut.
[5] Despite your burns, you hoble back to the castle, collapsing on the entryway floor. Your employees who weren't injured in the explosion help you up and bring you to your laboratory, in case you want to work for some reason; try to treat your horrible burns; and explain what's happened. For starters, there's a crater in the yard instead of the heat ray/barbeque area. Also, the explosion damaged the walls. On the bright side, the diggerbots were instructed to remove dirt from the dirt-filled rooms to fix the crater and shore up the walls, so nothing should collapse. [4] The bunker didn't sustain more than a few cracks in the ceiling.

What will you do now?

Granted. You are moved to outer space near the galactic core to view it better. Oh, right, there's a supermassive black hole there. Have fun!

I wish I was the supreme lord of sociology.

Break the laws of spiritdom and interact anyways

[1] Ah, nope. Hey, wait a sec, you are interacting with something! I wonder if this sign is important..."Black Hole Generator, Caution"? Oh fu--

Care to re-reincarnate?
