Import stone? If you can defeat enough goblins to get goblinite, it's probably cheaper to import stone than to forge metal mechanisms. Just buy what boulders they bring in bulk and only use them for mechanisms.

1. I think we've exhausted this topic of discussion.

2. I highly doubt the lack of low-brow entertainment of any kind in any time period, except for anachronistic things like TV shows in the 18th century. And dwarven smiths are among te most respected of non-noble dwarves, in addition to making pretty much the most expensive items known to dwarf. They're like Bill Gates or Honda or something, especially once nobles start buying gold crowns and iron scepters and such. And that's assuming dwarves don't have paper or stone slab stories or something.

3. I just want bilophilia to be a simple hobby, like fishing, sports, or drinking. Or bar fighting, since drinking seems to be a metabolic requirement for dwarves.

I'll take the third dwarf from the bottom during a period of military activity. Name it GreatWyrm(metal), replacing (metal) with the capitalized form of a metal, ore, gem, stone, or other material the dwarf likes, in that order. Just like I usually ask for. Let me know what my newest dwarf is.

You can also use them to equip a slightly-better-than-unarmed militia if you can't or won't give them metal stuff.

In this case i'd give everyone a xbow and wooden bolts over training weapons.

You apparently have more wood, quivers, and confidence in marksdwarves than I.

The best science threads I've seen point to density being vital. Shear something was also used in calculations, but bolts are fired hard enough that it doesn't matter IIRC.

DF isn't that bad NOW. Throw in computing advancements and optimization, and you've got a net increase even with new features. Also, crashes are the first things Toady fixes.
