First off, signs in DF are written on. If you can't read, you can't figure out what they're selling except by going inside. This is in human towns, and dwarves seem to be more advanced than humans.
Second, if you can read and comprehend a detailed request, what stops you from reading at least simple literature?
Finally, I was merely requesting biblophilia to be implemented in a way that wouldn't lead to bibliophiles being burnt.

I just started looking around. I found a moody dwarf; it's a shame, but since we have neither leather nor metal I'm walling him off.
I also removed my dwarf's custom profession of "Loon" and wondered why we had a forge but no smelter.
Well, first two priorities:
1. MAGMA!
2. Porcelain statue of a fish!
Does anyone know of any programs I could use to get a good visual in three-D to design the fish?

He was mining through blue stuff, and had time to look around and SCREAM before dying. Also, picks don't fall very far in the magma sea before hitting magma, kinda like how if you drop a dive knife when scuba diving it doesn't take long to get underwater.
