DF General Discussion / Re: Goblin Queen of Dwarves...
« on: September 11, 2012, 05:10:30 pm »
A goblin settlement, or a settlement including goblins, was conquered at some point by your civ. The royal line died out, and the dwarfified descendants of those goblins were deemed the best choice for the new monarch. The current queen practiced shearing for some reason.

Grant and Lurina should go out scouting. Ash should dig for mire ires and gems. Tom should cut logs like he said he would. Coleman and Rosa should start planning the new buildings with James before the former two start laying the foundation(s). James would then pace about, helping where he can and trying to find something innovative to help with.

Add the force of my prayers to aid misko in that venture!

On a side note, will my fort be crawling with undead once the necrodorf pays me a visit?
Possibly, it depends on how fast it reaches the crypts or refuse piles.

Create an undead horde, sic them on a town, raise the dead of both sides, repeat until the town runs out of people you can find. Raise all corpses you find as you leave town. Fast-travel between a few towns and other places as your undead army grows.
Ehh, awesome idea, but wouldn't that generate unlimited hair zombies and things like that?
...No, those only happen by butchery. And if so, what's the problem?
Okay, how about finger or toe or tongue zombies?
You can't raise any of those, only hands, heads, and things connected to them. You can't even raise a headless cat.

Some just have syndromes.
It wouldn't surprise me if more conditions than "in a civ" are needed for your blood to rain.

DF Suggestions / Re: EXP, Anti-Legendary.
« on: September 11, 2012, 04:49:43 pm »
I'm not saying that a year of mining should grant legendary skill, I'm just saying that a dwarf should have other options open to him.
Being a Legend implies there are few others with your skills, but Dwarf Fort as it exists now churns out Legends at ridiculous quanitities.
And gaining Legendary skill should not be as easy as [make rock crafts R].

I stand by my idea of Legends only being created through moods and making Grand Master the experience cap.
Because Grand Masters already make lots of masterwork goods.

Legends should be special, not mooks.

You shouldn't be screwed out of a legendary because your grand master stonecrafter got possessed. And I never said that repeating the same job over and over should result in a legendary dwarf; in fact, I said essentially the opposite.

...Let me think about that. How were literacy rates in the 1300s or 1400s?
Higher than you might think, particularly in cities. Your average farmhand or labourer could muddle through without, but skilled tradesmen, merchants and anyone else who owned property or needed to keep even the most rudimentary financial or inventory records would need at least to be able to read and write a little.

Most dwarves count as skilled tradesmen, and almost all own some kind of property. Unless it's just on loan from the fort leader or something, but it's dependant on dwarven politics.
Besides, the written signs in towns testify to high literacy rates.

But I don't think a very skilled woodcrafter, jeweller, mason or even an engraver would ever really need to read. Maybe they could have a rudimentary knowledge and be able to recognise things on signs, but broadly speaking they may not be able to read much beyond that. The majority of dwarves are either craftsmen or manual labourers, and neither really need to read.
...Craftsmen, the most iconic of dwarven professions and one that Jake cited literacy as most vital for. Plus, what would the point of signs printed with writing be if their customers were mostly illiterate? Pictures would work much better, no?

So, sneak off?
Also, acronyms have multiple possible meanings.

-----

[5] You sneak away from town, avoiding human contact until you flop down on your bed. Recovering from a lost arm is bad enough without sneaking a few miles up the road. You fall asleep and don't wake up until around 4 in the afternoon.
All refreshed except for some oddly-colored patches all over your face (which you could hide with makeup) and missing an arm, what do you do?

That would lead to oddly appropriate book titles like "We don't need brains where we're going."
