DF Gameplay Questions / Re: I am a complete newbie.
« on: September 03, 2012, 06:13:27 pm »
Alright then.

Is it possible to create Forgotten Beasts/clowns in the Testing Arena?

The implication here is that I want to control the abomination, bleheheheheh
No, just werebeasts and other interaction'd critters.

There was another airlock on the other side of the room, and a normal door to the right, probably leading to an engineering quarters and a life support room.
Fun fact, airlocks are airtight.
We're threatening the crew members in the crew quarters, which is the room we're currently in. Not the people behind the second air lock.
Wait, there are people in the same room as us? We definitely can't retreat just to depressurize it, they'd just slip into the other room.

Here's an idea, I want opinions on it first though. We could let the crew have their weapons back, on the promise that they'll assist us against the marines, as they are obviously corrupt asshats who were willing to throw their lives away, to help us save their friends from said marines.
Too dangerous.

((or im back))
No better off keep them unarmed and place them somewhere where they wont get in the way, they are still technically republicans
Indeed. It could be a ruse.

Have Gordon or Reg, whichever wants to do it, keep an eye on the crew. Everyone else, take any weapons or other gear we can from the area and prepare to move on.

What about the island?

As they only had handguns, where as we have assault rifles and exoskeletons, we should offer them the chance to surrender first. We outmatch them insanely.

Thus speak the following to the room: "I know you're in here. My platoon does too. And what do you expect to do against a team of hardened storm troopers? Give up your weapons, and the rest of the ship, and you'll be just fine. If you don't well, I'm the one with bigass gun and the exosuit..."

(No harm in upping the truth a little :P )
This. After all, how certain are we that there aren't other pressurized places, say, just beyond the airlock?

DF Suggestions / Re: Procedurally Generated Cave Beasts

Make your own suggestion for that, and explain how it would work and how it would make the game better.

I doubt that it's the same dwarf--dwarves make one artifact apiece in their lives.

Figure out some way to get the scepter dropped on his head constantly. Possibly lock him into a room with a minecart, rollers, and a stockpile that only accepts adamantine scepters of artifact quality. Drop in the scxepter and have him load it into the minecart before pushing it onto the rollers, going up a slope, over a track stop that drops the scepter onto the dwarf, and coming back down. Repeat until the dwarf is dead, whether by scepter or dehydration.

Try to figure out if there's anyone else around, then proceed with caution into the next room--Reg in front, then me, then Gordon, then Lilith.

Politely remind Lilith that I was never an engineer, then agree with Lilith's plan. She should know what she's talking about.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Brilliant idea!
I would suggest a visit to the British Army disposal yard. I think it's in Lancashire.
Armoured cars, minesweepers, APCs, tanks, they even have aircraft!
No boats though. :(

And there is the problem of getting all of the stuff to the US to invade a French island.
I live in England, and some others probably do too.
We could meet up in wherever we choose to take over.
Alright, can you figure out some way to get that useful stuff to wherever we're taking over? Unless we want to take over Ireland or something.
Too large of an area to control easily, and there are multiple disputes on that island.
Precisely why that potential trove of stolen weaponry is less than useless unless we can get it to Guadalupe or something.

Naw, just down to the island.  Get some J.R.R. Tolkien references going here!
(and if you don't know what I am talking about, you are a terrible nerd)
Ah.
You could, but the fall would probably be lethal. Try building stairs down instead. Then you can make a pool to toss dwarves into.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Optimization
« on: September 03, 2012, 05:01:15 pm »
Why is it a generally held belief that ToadyOne doesnt do any optimization as he works?
Because DF still has FPS problems. Also, new features tend to increase CPU load on average.
FPS issues will always persist though. A larger enough and or old enough fortress will slow down any computer.

Yes, but the whole point is it doesn't have to be that way.
So, you're saying that that dwarf fortress can be infinitely large (in terms of item count and embark size) and old?

Not "infinitely" large, obviously, since the universe can't do infinitely large, but sufficiently large such that the average modern desktop would have no problem with thousand year embarks bigger than anyone could possibly ever want.

Either you are unaware of the sheer complexity of DF or you think everyone has supercomputers. And that DF is multithreaded.

Ask Lilith if she thinks we could restart the engine to turn on the lights. The marines here know the terrain, an ambush would be in their advantage.

DF General Discussion / Re: Zombie Modding / Evil Biomes
« on: September 03, 2012, 04:58:22 pm »
No. The procedural generation making zombies is hardcoded.
Zombies are easy to kill, but hard to keep down. Tossing them into a magma-filled pit with some kind of weapon trap or something might work, by collapsing the zombie and incinerating the corpse.
Or, toss all corpses down a pit and hope you don't get fliers.

Terrifying biomes deserve the name.

Ask Lilith if she knows where the engine room, bridge, or other lit rooms would be.
