DF Suggestions / Re: Adding Multiplayer/LAN to Dwarf Fortress
« on: September 03, 2012, 06:45:00 am »
Well, it wasn't. At least, not in your post, and in a debate you shouldn't leave your research to your opponent...especially if my point is not invalidating your claim about how well multiplayer stuff works in SimCity, but how it wouldn't apply to DF.

I have no idea what you mean here or if you're referring to me or Kipi.  There is no multiplayer in SimCity as far as I know.
Oops, I was mixing the original proposal with the argument I was arguing against. Replace "multiplayer" with "unpaused designation."

Quote
My response was aimed to the fact that you compared Dwarf Fortress and SimCity.
Did I?  I said being able to designate stuff with the game unpaused works well in SimCity.
Same idea.

The problem is that, to compare features, the games must be even remotely similar. And in which way is SimCity similar to Dwarf Fortress? And I don't mean something like "in both you create city" but concrete similarities. Instead there are lots of things that makes the two games totally different.
The designating is rather similar.  In both games you designate rectangular plots of land and then wait for the work to be done.  In both, it can take significant time to plan out and designate a large area.  In both, your current focus can be interrupted by any number of problems or disasters that require quick action.  The mechanic is similar enough to warrant an off-hand comment about how I liked it in SimCity.
That's like saying that Feudal Japan and Medieval Europe were very similar, because both used a feudal system of government and used soldier-nobles. Dwarf Fortress has many, many more things that can go wrong, without the game even "realizing" that something's off. Also, there's a lot of autopause and autozoom, which would mess with stuff.

Quote
For example, in DF you can affect to the life of every single dwarf in your fortress and even in some extent to control their movement. Can you do that in SimCity?
How is that relevant to pausing while designating?
Simple. DF and SC have completely different scales. In SimCity, if you tell someone to build a house, the house will start bring built. In DF, it's a lot more complex, and you'll probably be interrupting people. Also, if a disaster interrupts you in SimCity, you're a building behind on your designations. If one hits you in DF, you lose your spot in a potentially complex digging designation.

Again, I'm not against unpausing while designating, I just think it should always pause by default.

DF Suggestions / Re: different techs for civs
« on: September 03, 2012, 06:37:54 am »
cement is one of the main things that fall out of wide spread use after Rome.
glass, under floor heating and plumbing all fall in use across mainland Europe a well.
Wouldn't those fall under the blanket time period of "The Dark Ages?" I assumed there was some kind of underlying reason why a bunch of stuff was lost/forgotten then.

as for lowering the tech level a good plague/war with a fire/earthquake can kill off both those that know of the tech and destroy the tech, but still leave some traces around.
Depends on the tech, of course. I'm having trouble imagining a plague that destroys anything but life and perhaps clenliness, to be honest.

It would probably make sense for the maximum length chains could hold vary by weight and strength. A chain of metal X can hold Y weight, counting the chain, lift, and everything on the lift. Long chains would be heavier.

I'm not sure how much of the minecart code could be recycled into lifts, though.

***OOC: How do I equip the iron sheild? I can wear everything else but not the sheild even after unequiping my own***
In case you haven't figured this out yet, you don't wear shields, you hold them.
Good story, BTW.

You can't arm creatures who aren't dwarves.

Not exactly true. There's no way to tell your dwarves to arm it specifically, but there is a way, albeit imprecise.
1. Equip (unskilled, you want your minotaur alive) dwarf with weapon
2. Throw dwarf in pit
3. Hope minotaur wrestles weapon off the dwarf

This may have to be repeated several times for it to work.
It's as likely to end with a dwarf wielding the dwarf's tunic, and twice as likely to end up with a sock. Not that that's not awesome, mind you.
True, but you can also strip the dwarves first. I agree that it's not the best method though.
If it's the only method, it is, by definition, the best method.

Do remmember that dragon takes...ages to get older thus usefull...a Dwarf sized dragon isnt of much use afaik.
Other than a flying flamethrower.
For some reason, DF!dragons don't seem to fly.

they don't have wings, for one, but you'd also have to give them the [FLIER] tag (Not that it would do you much good, considering how flying is broken for civ members).
Cave dragons have wings, though, and some Eastern dragons fly without them.
Flying would be of minimal use in most dwarven fortresses, thanks to the whole "in glorified mines" thing.

GreatWyrmGold,

I do indeed, but given other aspects of my current fort are being wonky, I wouldn't be surprised if that was, too.
How many layers? You're normally suppose to have like 15 layers or soil and stone, minumum, between the bottom of the surface and the top of the first cavern layer.

Dear Babyfactories,

I warned you.  I also set the init file to ZERO GODDAMNED BABIES.  How you're continuing to have them, I don't know, but if this continues I'll be making a new Mommy Squad to deal with the goblins when they come, and no one will give a shit, because engravings and gold statues in every room.

Me
Wait a few months. The baby cap won't stop existing pregnancies, only prevent new ones.

It would be a nice addition to have intelligent enemies try to pick up weapons on their own...
Anyone else think so?
Definitely.

No there hasn't!

Let the debate about if we were debating about debating commence, and may it spawn many other meta-meta-debates.

You can't arm creatures who aren't dwarves.
And no, you can't milk it. That might be for the best; after all, minotaurs are humanoid in form...

wow i guess i should make a new topic of funniest artifact you ever got right? and i cant believe i typed boat instead of boot
There's at least a couple.

One could avoid the fractalist interpretation if the dwarves do the engraving in, say, an impressionist way. Or cubist. Or dadaist. Perfectionist does not equal realist.

Although the universe-folding hypothesis is obviously the truth.
The universe-folding idea is amusing but not canon. I like the fractal and cubist theories best.

Artifact descriptions are not generated until you look at it. Think Schrodinger's Cat, but with less radiation or poison and more things menacing with spikes.
