DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Edge-of-map drawbridges
« on: September 02, 2012, 03:26:39 pm »
Sieges leave after a while, if you care that much. Generally, I wall off only smaller fortresses, so there's not much FPS death there, anyways.

That sure are some epic bolts.
You have the display case mod?
If so put those in there and vastly boost the value of a room.
If not, what a waste..
Have a dwarf fire them and then retrieve them all, so you have 5 megavaluebolts instead of a stack.
The stack is worth 5 times as much.

I'd say use them like your "black arrows". Use them on like badasses that you KNOW your going to probably die from (titans, FB, colossi, etc.). They're actually pretty badass bolts to be perfectly honest, if I saw that comming at me, I'd probably shit myself, my entire fortress would shit itself, and everyone they KNOW will shit themselves (Scare off the elves anyone?)
They're still no better than normal horse bone bolts...

A major part of DF is adding your own flavor, or story. Using your imagination, you know... that thing we all had when we were children? I agree with him, if youre not put off by the micro-managing side of making sure they are only used on a FB or HFS go ahead, would make a great story to have your Elite Marksdwarf captain slay a whole siege or something with these bolts.

In that case, I'd like to imagine the display case to have the five bolts displayed in a star shape, displayed next to a couple rotting fjngers of the marksdwarf who tried to steal them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do non-tamed animals disappear when you abandon?

It should be fine if left in a cage, and would probably disappear if you released it first.

What happened to the saber-toothed tigers, the cave bears, the cave lions, the wooly mammoths, the ground sloths, the mastadons, the elephant birds, the moas, and all of the other big animals that were around until the first Native Americans or Aborigines or whomever showed up in the non-European areas? Did they mysteriously die of disease, did Europeans come several thousand years before archaeology says they did, or is that a false statement?

I have read on a forum somewhere about someone using a modded reaction to Forge Cows.
Those weren't creature-cows, those were vermin-cows. That was also pre-transformations, so it's now possible to create a syndrome that takes one creature and turns it into another. I'm not sure what kind of offspring two transformed creatures will produce though. A dwarf turned into a jabberer still gives dwarf meat when butchered, so the transformation is not complete in all cases.
They should be able to breed just fine, it's just that when a creature dies all transformations end, meaning that you get whatever butchery products that they would have given previously instead of the new ones.
"I'll just butcher this jabberer...OH GOD IT TURNED INTO COG!"
(glances both ways)
"Well, who will ever know the difference?"

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Optimization
« on: September 02, 2012, 03:13:21 pm »
Why is it a generally held belief that ToadyOne doesnt do any optimization as he works?
Because DF still has FPS problems. Also, new features tend to increase CPU load on average.

I think that creatures do make splashes now. That's probably the problem.

Invasions allegedly also controls megabeasts and such.

Damn , I've always been thinking like that guy in the cool quote .

also im thinking that we have earned that meat because humans originally are plant eaters and just a bit hunters , because we have no sharp teeth , no sharp claws and we are not so agile . anyway , we slaughtered biggest predators and made +[insert large and dangerous predator here] meat biscuits+ out of them .
Actually, primates are pretty much all omnivorous. Also, herbivores tend to make better snacks than carnivores for some reason, but your point still stands even if we didn't commonly eat the big predators.

You know why Africa has the biggest living land animals? They're used to humans, so they didn't get killed off by them until we brought in guns and stuff.

The amount of damage you'd do, and animals you'd kill, in converting enough land to feed all of humanity on plants alone, not to mention effects from alien species etc, would probably do fuckloads of ecological damage as well, in addition to overfishing, and as we wouldn't have a reason to keep nearly so many farm animals probably a lot less of them as well.
True enough, but animals aren't really more space-efficient, since they also need to eat. The solution is to implement more efficient farming methods and stop overpopulation somehow.

Technically humans do have one physical advantage over most animals (I've heard that some African tribes would walk various animals to death, defeating them with pure stamina), but other than that very minor quibble I entirely agree with the honey badger guy.

DF Suggestions / Re: Adding Multiplayer/LAN to Dwarf Fortress
« on: September 02, 2012, 02:00:10 pm »
SimCity worked well because it's totally different style of game. You don't usually get situations where you have to act quickly and with accuracy, situations which happens in DF all the time. So comparing SimCity and Dwarf Fortress is not valid, IMHO.

It's rather off-topic from multiplayer, but the problem here is that pausing is tied to designating rather than situations where you need to act quickly.  Sure it's useful to pause when you get sieged or breach a cavern, but why designating?  Better to leave it up to the player.  You can pause whenever you want by pressing space.

If I'm under attack, I might pause the game and designate a bunch of stuff.  90% of the time when I'm designating, I don't need the game paused.
I think I should have worded my post a bit different. My response was aimed to the fact that you compared Dwarf Fortress and SimCity. In fact, if you can still pause any time you want, there really could be an option for forcing the game to run while designations. In forts with low FPS this could be very good since not much manage to happen. This could have saved several my older forts from boredom.
First off, the default state of the designations screen should be paused. I'm not saying that having the option to unpause while designating is bad; I'm saying not having the option to pause during designation s bad. Funny, that's what'd need to happen if multiplayer was in...

The difference was that in MP you would not be able to pause even if you wanted, while in SP you could pause at will.
And all of it could be controlled by settings in inits (new file?) so that all players could set it to their tastes. Or disable completely.

But we are derailing here, perhaps I could make new suggestion about this idea (for SP use of course).
That's...actually almost exactly what I said.

Why is there a siege? How did I miss this? Oh, yeah, updates lacking formatting. I'll try to break my recap up a bit to help.

Floor over the moat, or build bridges over it, or something. Then wait.
Alternatively, expose the moat to the sun, then seal up anything that you need to.

If you want a metal flask, try looting a keep. Or a dwarven fortress.
