...That.
Also, clay, fire clay, and sand? Sweet! You need to establish a colony on the surface to collect clay and sand, then dump them downstairs.

It's a well-known bug. Personally, I usually prefer to just wall off the fortress.

DF General Discussion / Re: Interesting book titles
« on: September 02, 2012, 01:01:27 pm »
If I remember correctly, one of my worlds has a book named "Incinerated Dwarf", which naturally is an autobiography. Is Attaquery a person/place in your world maybe?
Attaquery sounds like a procedurally generated name.

"start your day with the human"
and another book , i think the name was like this - "dwarf or human"

edit: i think that the dwarf who wrote it  was in a self conflict .
Sounds like it was about two people.

I'm glad I'm finally listed with my titles.

(By the way: F.O.R.G.O.T.E.N.B.E.A.S.T. is just the official title for the head of the B.I.O.G.L.a.D.O.S.)

The problem is, if we were all vegetarians, we wouldn't be any better off ecology wise then we are now.
Yes, yes we would.
Probably, but what would we do with all of the dairy farms and such? Anyways, there's other reasons we keep animals, and would you want to give up sources of cheap fertilizer and such?
Meat eating is too ingrained in our psyche and society to throw it out any time soon. Frankly, there are more pressing ecological issues, like overpopulation and pollution and destruction and depletion of natural resources and such. Eating meat is really not so bad, compared to that. What we need is a good, strong worldwide government, ideally lead by me or someone like me so everyone would hate it equally.

Well, there's two ways you could do this.

1. Mine a floating island with some natural soil in it. This makes for an easy way to grow crops, and if you chose clay you'd have infinite building material.
2. Build a floor, then water it. You can grow crops on mud, you know, even those surface crops.

Wood might be harder; try to deforest the surface before severing your link with the surface world. Or, better yet, set up an island in the sky with your meat and pottery industries, and have it ship stuff to the surface settlement in exchange for fuel, wood, and other goods you can't get in the air. Maybe including some fertilizer...but the surface would need to have a lot of wood...tree farm? Good Armok, I want to do this myself!

If you can still play your fortress, they've wandered off.

If not...they are hiding somewhere...

I've got it!

Spoiler: HUGE Image! (click to show/hide)

Let's give a round of applause for my digital camera, which has left this image a bit bigger than the piece of paper I drew it on!
Okay, it's not colored, but I included six crudely-drawn dwarves and a bunch of cavern wildlife! And the shell is actually enormous! And the head looks like a skull with some muscle and sinew on it!

Military + civilian job with uniform (miner, woodcutter, hunter) = Bugs! Try to avoid it.

What do I do? I build my fortress in a tower hanging inside the hole. That's what I do.

And no walls, only floors and stairs. And flying pets. And can I get a save or something?

Yeah, can a giant sponge dodge out of water?
I doubt it. Maybe. It would then drown.

Can or can't zombies and husks swim, this is the question.

All undead become amphibious, so when the zombie giant sperm whale bursts out of the sea, you know.

Speaking of Giant Sperm Whales, just how common / hard to find are Giant Sperm Whales? I've have a dream that one day I will find one and keep it as a pet within my fort somehow.
Find a savage ocean and wait. Better yet, a border between two savage oceans.
Check out Sphalerite's old sea-serpent-taming thread. A lot of it applies better to giant sperm whales than sea serpents, now, since sea serpents lay eggs and there are dozens per biome. Also, you get almost 10k food and over a thousand bones per whale, compared to a few hundred food and several dozen bones per sea serpent.

DF Suggestions / Re: [Adv. Mode]Keep Water in Wells fluid
« on: September 02, 2012, 12:27:03 pm »
I think the issue is how temperature works in general. After all, in the Arctic, the water underground isn't liquid, it's frozen permafrost! In DF, an underground aquifer is liquid until you expose it to sunlight. I short, temperature needs to be reworked.

Also, freezing wells doesn't seem that unrealistic if it's cold enough. I'd be surprised that you could get any ice from it, though.

More gameplay than realism?
1. What do you mean?
2. Why?

1. you said technology loss doesn't happen that often in rl. I'm saying it should happen fairly often.

2. to stop all civs ending up with maximum tech levels after a while.
1. In small areas, but I can't think of many large-scale losses of technology, except in places like Easter Island where the whole society and the resources in needed were also vanishing. Can you? I'd be interested if you can.
2. Or slow technological innovation. Or start at a lower tech level. Or scale the rate of technological advancement to the length of worldgen somewhat. Or provide plenty of ways for civs to be bombed back to the Stone Age, so to speak.
