DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Building next to settlements?
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:57:35 am »
It works. Everyone hates you. Die and reclaim, the dwarf-killers stay around all friendly while the others have vanished. Also, only towns and fortresses (not the dwarven kind or the goblin kind) exist.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: I need help protecting my migrants
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:55:49 am »
Another solution:

Draft the least useful adult migrants. Have them attack the goblins. Lead the other migrants to safety.

Now, I'm not about to read 51 pages of space, but I think we need needlessly complicated death traps. I'm sure this topic has been brought up. We need things like literal swords of Damocles hanging around in orbit. Hell, here's what I'm thinking: we make colonies, right? Fill them up with people and cows and shit. Make them real big; the size of moons. Then, when somebody wants to fuck with us- BAM! We drop a colony on them, all Zeon style.

Someone looks at us funny? BAM! Colony for you.
Earth Federation all up on our shit? BAM! TWO COLONIES.
Is that a Gundam? Who cares? HERE'S A COLONY.

We need space colonies. People might die too. And cows. But whatever. BAM.
Death traps? If we're using them for war and not population reduction, good idea.
Needlessly complicated? Nah, when real lives are on the line we need to stick to practicality.
Colonies? No. We can find plenty of perfectly uninhabited rocks to drop onto Earth. Or just redirect a satelite's orbit so that it hits a city, that'll screw things up big time.

DF General Discussion / Re: True Dorfs In Other Media
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:48:28 am »
The Time Traveler in The Time Machine and Dr. Frankenstein in Frankenstein both have the dedication to their science any dwarf would envy! The latter chickens out in the end, though, and pays for it.

(Note: I am talking about the books.)

DF General Discussion / Re: What Would Urist Do?
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:46:42 am »
Nothing. Oh, look, Urist's feet are getting blisters and he can't wiggle his toes! Better get to the hospital along with the other couple dozen dwarves (minimum) that are already there...

What would Urist do if he could split into two identical dwarves of approx. 65% of his at will?

Heh.

So...logistics and info.

Apparently, we have chosen to set up or main colony on Mars. I have been self-appointed Head Biological Officer, and no one has argued. We have considered genetic engineering to deal with various problems; the best suggestion insofar as that goes is to create symbiosis with photosynthetic bacteria, which I guess isn't all genetic engineering. Also, we're planning a war with Terra once we get established. Well, some are, I'm advocating more peaceful solutions, like THREATENING war and death from above and all of that.
Logistics? This is tricky. To survive attack, likely most of our stuff will be deep underground. Also, power will be based on geothermal and solar. Food will be grown either with artificial light or in big greenhouses on the Martian (or Lunar--I've suggested a military base on Luna for better access to Terran orbital space. Not that reliance on surface greenhouses would be a good idea, so close to Terra...) surface. Asteroid mining would probably be a good idea, and along with that some kind of Ceres-based, erm, base would be neat. These widely-flung bases would make communication an issue, so each base or spaceship should have a captain/mayor/whatever with absolute power until he comes back to an area in contact with some other power. Naturally, if they violated the guidelines or goals outlined by Central Command (probably on Mars), this would be treason, but punishment would be light(er?) on those who simply followed the captain's orders. After all, what could a single spaceship do that's worth losing a well-trained crew who was interested in not risking the ship? Speaking of soaceships, they should be covered in photovoltaic cells except for the thingy that expels waste heat; this both increases available power AND makes us harder to detect by Terran ships. Obviously, most of this would be under debate or is already, but most of it is (IMNSHO) reasonable and logical.

DF Modding / Re: Civilized Mod
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:35:24 am »
You can't limit jobs by caste, but you can limit positions to caste. I've forgotten, AGAIN, but there is a tag that allows you to restrict access to a position by caste alone.
You can also modify skill learn rates and/or add natural skills by caste--say, red civvers are good at military skills except for sword and spear, as well as forging (and can also throw fireballs), but suck at woodworking of all sorts except burning; yellow civvers are good at woodworking, farming, and archery but suck at melee skills and anything to do with stone or metal (and also are a bit faster than average); blue civvers are good fishers and craftsmen but are bad fighters and don't like most burning-based skills (also swim); gray civvers are excellent stone- and metal-workers, as well as being as tough as their preferred materials and skilled at unarmed combat, but they just can't get good at weapon or armor usage skills and are both slow and bad at working with more delicate materials; white civvers are cowardly artisans and emit light; violet civvers are natural medics and nobles, but bad at menial work and martial skills, but have excellent minds and can even slow enemies by confusing their minds; maybe brown civvers should be the farmers, and also throw mud and summon plant vines to disable enemies' legs...green civvers are great rangers and othewr outdoorsy skills, but bad at melee and don't get along with people...black civvers are terrifying at birth and always hostile...need to think more about orange civvers...
Once I get a better name and concept, someone should make this mod. Maybe me.

Hm, okay.

How are we planning to attack Terra, or have we abandoned that idea? Also, is it JUST Mars, or is there a possibility of settling elsewhere as well?

50319
A word of advice for whoever picks this up, dear LORD watch out for the giant hamsters.
Oh, Armok, this is hilarious...
FYI, I'm going to be out of town for the remainder of the week. If my turn comes up before then, I'll wait a year or something until my return.

also, the only thing keeping this fort from tantrum sprialing right now is the fact that nobody has any friends.
This quote needs to be added to the OP, along with the note that the dwarf who doesn't care about anything went insane.

In a fortress like this, you should never capture zombies in large amounts. Someone will let them out for sure.
Elf...I am slowly being corrupted by the Bay12 culture. When I first came here, I never would have said that. Then again, I probably wouldn't have joined this fort then, either.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Teleporting refuse?
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:09:34 am »
This seems probable. I've had the contents of entire stockpiles teleport around whilst deconstructing walls. Ah, the Fun of the modern aboveground keep...at least I had plenty of haulers.

now I'm getting overrun by babies. They're exactly like cats, except for they drink booze.
No, babies can't drink booze. I think that's why they're grumpy all the time.
I fail to see why they'd be grumpy--not only do babies not need to work and get a free pass to see the world for a year (or at least the parts where their mother lives and works), but dwarven breast milk HAS to be at least 30-40 proof.

50324
Holy carp, I leave for half a week and a couple dozen posts get added!
Can someone summarize what's been agreed on and what's being discussed right now?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: If a baby was born during a minecart ride...
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:03:16 am »
Test it. I doubt it's ever happened.
Likely, the baby would be left behind on the ground, like what happens when a nursing mother gets onto a minecart.
