DF Suggestions / Re: Cults
« on: August 02, 2012, 08:44:56 pm »
I think it would be cool if DF developed a system of worship similar to the religion of the Roman Empire: many deities needing to be worshipped and sacrificed to, with EXTREME importance on performing rituals correctly, and dire consequences if you mess something up and offend one of the gods.  But also allowing worship of a very broad pantheon, including foreign deities.

And the gods, when suitably impressed, could bestow favors, curse enemies, etc.
Sounds good! Of course, in the DF world, there's a pantheon for each goblin, human, or dwarven civilization, plus elven forest force thingies, whatever kobolds worship (ancestor spirits?), megabeasts and such posing as or receiving worship as separate gods, demons, and so forth, all squabbling with each other, likely with inter-pantheon wars that make the ancient myths look tame...thankfully, most such things would probably manifest in the mortals' realm as, at most, holy wars and curses.

This needs to wait until the economy is back it.

DF Suggestions / Re: Threats originating from inside the fortress
« on: August 02, 2012, 08:41:08 pm »
Vampires? Sure, they're not much of a threat, but they're there. Also tantrumers, berserk dwarves, stupidity...
Alright, traitor dwarves and such would be neat, and criminals would make sense, but for now we're basically running the equivalent of dwarven frontier settlements--only a few hundred people. At this level, there's not likely to be much crime. Eventually, a few cutpurses perhaps, but everyone at least knows everyone else by face and probably name, so crime isn't much of an option.
In short...wait, it'll come eventually as it is PLANNED!

Side note:
Or what about monsters or even rival dwarves digging directly into your fort from underground?
Dig-enabled foes would be awesome as long as they're rare.  Siege machines capable of breaking down walls would be cool, too.  They shouldn't be able to destroy a wall instantly, but perhaps after a minute or so.
How long does it take a dwarven miner? That's about how long it should take a goblin miner or somesuch.

DF Suggestions / Re: Ancient history
« on: August 02, 2012, 08:38:27 pm »
Something i really, really, really want to do in dwarf fortress, perhaps when we all own current supercomputers, is generate a world which has a history as long as the existence of any form of human, or preferably, as long as the earths, and see what happens.
That does sound kinda neat, but I suspect that evolution and technological development such will never be implemented much, so it probably wouldn't be much different than a normal world--just more heavily populated.

Until then, however, i would like to see if there could be a way for dwarf fortress to handle very long world gens without incinerating my house, by which i mean simulating worlds of truly epic age, perhaps even before the existence of humans, dwarfs, elves, goblins and kobolds. The time when the world was being shaped for the first time, when strange races swam and walked and run, and when even the mighty megabeasts were still in their infancy. Obviously, this can't be simulated with near the same level of detail, but if worlds contained reminders, hints, the barest fragments of bygone times and aeons; fossils, cave paintings, strange and stranger trinkets. I will say that ideally this would contain simulating evolution to some degree, or rather explaining why creatures have taken their particular forms while maintaining its fantasy routes, but i have a slight feeling that might be a while yet :P.
An Ancient Age, predating record...ancient civilizations rose, then fell...wonders were brought into being, a few surviving as valuable artifacts...I like it.

Something that would also be extremely cool, either for a mod or the game, would be a primeval fantasy world gen when we had just come down from the tree tops/sky bridges/rivers/crevice/body/, or playing as a randomly generated race from before any of the familiar races, living with their nascent ancestors, with all the fun that living in a world where gods and creatures that would make megabeasts shiver has.
Probably a mod. A neat mod, but a mod.

I'd rather stick to my imagination, frankly. Also, what do you mean, "a possible trend in future DF ASCII art?"

DF General Discussion / Re: What Would Urist Do?
« on: August 02, 2012, 08:30:29 pm »
Nothing; he's too busy being furious at how these people DO NOT UNDERSTAND EVOLUTION!!

What would Urist do if, after surviving the attack, s/he had a chance to lecture the fortress on the nuances of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, which is a basic and vital tenant of modern biology but which NO ONE even seems to TRY to understand?

Well, seeing as how most of the 1st world has either seen or heard of the Matrix, it's not likely that we could without having a major military advantage...and then there's the issue of a bunch of Neo-wannabes...

BTW, I've finished the plans for the partial asteroid base. Basically, it would be a wheel spinning around a dense core at an uncertain speed, maintaining a good amount of gravity (usually a bit above 1 G). Also, there's a higher-gravity gymnasium/barracks/training center thingy, and facilities for mining stuff (presumably mining drones of some sort--I haven't figured the specifics out). I'll add a bit of class and readability, as much as I can with all of the notes scattered about, and then figure out a way to post it. BTW, it's not intended to hold more than around a thousand people (military, miners, technicians, medics, officers, etc), and while it DOES have a few weapons, they're not much or detailed and are primarily intended for point defense, so another base (probably on Mars, given the poll's results, although Luna's not an impossibility) will be needed.

Here's an idea:
--Mars: Our main base. Will possibly export some food, although all bases should be able to sustain themselves for a while.
--Luna: A staging point for the Terran war. Probably a couple thousand people, mainly guards and war-machine operators; also some kind of big Gauss cannon, solar generators, etc. Most of our warships will probably be put into Lunar orbit. Also make sure to put some farms and solar generators up!
--Asteroid belt: At least one big base, the D.W.A.R.F. I've designed, would be nice--training soldiers far away from the Terran forces and mining at the same time! Some food processing/agriculture/etc has been included on my design, but some food will probably be needed to be imported. This will be compensated for by being able to mine. Also, the asteroidal base will probably need a fair bit more electricity than can be obtained by coating its surface with photovoltaic cells; I've accounted for that in part by suggesting such things as generators in the exercise equipment, but a fair amount of mining of uranium and the like would be needed. Perhaps some smaller base will be set up on Ceres or something, to store the ore and such; this would likely be a small settlement.
--Spaceships: Not too much more than you see in harder sci-fi. The big issues will be gravity and power; I suspect that centrifuges and nuclear power will be the solutions. There would be a fair number of warships, primarily focused on taking down Terran warships before they can damage us and perhaps some with orbital bombardment, in case the Gauss cannons don't work. Most ships, however, would probably be various sorts of freighters, moving gear, people, and minerals around the solar system.

Thoughts?

General Discussion / Re: Colonizing Other Worlds: A Poll
« on: August 02, 2012, 08:07:18 pm »
Off world colonies are one of my biggest dreams. However unlikely; I wish that earth will have an off world colony before I die.
Maybe it'll be this one! Probably not...heck, I'm not even sure if packing all of the technology for the space station would be practical for at least another few decades! But, that's for the other thread...

5 dead, 1 alive  :P

and we've got one 11 year old, one 8 year old, and a baby. though as you can see i've already given you a new dwarf.
Hm, thanks. I'll take the 11-year-old if when my current dwarf dies...oh, too late, everyone's dead. Well, I'll take a dwarf in the reclaim party. The fourth one down in the list, make him/her whatever.

No; stomping out gangs should stop gangs from coming. Refugees from more crime-ridden places might start coming, though...
Of course, if you wait too long, gangs might take a while to stomp out, if you even CAN...

...Meh. Seems like a lot of work, unless we want to screw up mods. Also, seeing as DF is an ASCII-style game, it would probably screw up the aesthetic.

I agree. Also, it would add awkwardness to games using custom races.

The awkwardness may be quite minor though, I'm sure people could live without having an image like that of an orc or whatever. If it's too difficult, just leave out the image.
Erm...Some of the less weird mods have included creepers and ponies as the playable race. Dwzrven faces for ponies or creepers...weird.

Considering how pissy some folks have gotten over the foot prints, I dont think generated faces for dorfs will go over well either.

I don't see why we couldn't make it an optional thing.
I don't see why we need it at all.

I'm pretty sure that baby dwarves' alcohol needs are taken care of by feeding off of the mother.
No, babies on the verge of becoming toddlers have the alcohol withdrawal thoughts.
Aw...I was imagining goblins getting drunk off of dwarven prison...wait, this is becoming a more and more disturbing image...

I think the limbs break in half. I've never tried. I think that even that would "get rid of" enough cartilage to get useful bones.
