DF Modding / Re: Strangest, Wierdest thing you ever modded into DF

Alchemy's already a skill; I suspect he just used a bunch of other unused skills, like nature magic and concentration, for the others.

Plat plants, maybe, but not creature-plants, or plants in reactions.
...I like the idea of humans having these neat plants.

I can imagine somehing like:
~3 clay -> 1 table or chair
1 clay -> 2-3 blocks
1 clay -> 20-30 clayshot (for a sling, or some other ranged weapon that can use stones as ammo)
5 clay -> 10-50% chance of a mechanism*, lots of useless clay bits of some sort. Maybe a few blocks?
1 clay -> 1-3 craft items, or 2 toys/mugs/etc.
Maybe there should be a separate material for these--"cracked clay" for most clay and
"cracked fire clay" for fire clay.
Unrelated: I like the idea of magical clay, rarely appearing as single-tile or small clusters in clay. Burning clay (hot, and useful in some reactions) in fire clay, for instance, or glowing clay in all kinds of clay. Burning clay could be made into burning clay torches (a special kind of weapon--I can also see "lit torches" made from wood, cloth, and oil or tallow) or used as a reagent in some magic, or maybe turned into fuel; glowing clay could be used as a reagent in making shamen.

*I have no idea what a mechanism is supposed to be, and so have no idea how realistic this is.

Add a syndrome to the gas.
Also, 60,000 degrees Urist it about 48,000 degrees above the temperature of magma, which I believe is rather hotter than the surface of the sun AND capable of melting adamantine. A nice 11-12k degrees should be sufficient for burning.

Let dwarves settle hills. I dunno about the banditry.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Best use of platinum?
« on: June 30, 2012, 09:34:43 pm »
Keep some around in case of mood. Even lead makes a decent edged artifact weapon, because edged attacks that don't penetrate armor turn into sorta weaker blunt attacks (unless I read something that made sense but has no grounding in DF). I think platinum is even sharper and denser than lead, so it should make for a good artifact weapon. Also a really stylin' one.

Ah, the amusements of the noob...It took me a fort or two to figure out z-levels, and a bunch of adventurer time was wasted due to not understanding ramps...what Fun...

Cage traps catch minotaurs. Aside from modding (it's possible, if you want to I can help you through it), there is no way to tame a caught minotaur. Yet. To my knowledge.

A creature whose dwarf dies keeps the name and gets to be a stray. No clue what happens if someone else adopts it then.

Bad luck can always kill you. Escpecially with archers. Escpecially especially with bogeymen. Especially escpecially especially with bogeymen archers...*shudder*

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarf leapers
« on: June 30, 2012, 08:36:43 pm »
Having looked at it a little more, it turns out the water at the bottom is stagnant, while at the top is fresh. This could be what's causing the dwarfs to head to the top stream, right? So I've finally gotten around to building a well in my fort. Wells do have a water filtration system built in don't they? I see no reason this shouldn't work.
First off, stagnant vs. fresh water doesn't affect pathing. Second off, wells just make dwarves ignore everything in their water supply (except magma).

...Yeah, probably. In case it's not: You've found a site for a great time-waster. Ask around some for starting your own blood-and-vomit-stained hole in the ground full of miasma, alcoholic crazed midgets, and cats. Assuming you survive the dragons, sieges, Things Dwarf Was Not Meant To Know, stupidity and rage of your citizens, and FPS.

Make sure you have spare clothing. Migrantite is an excellent and cheap source, but you get free clothes while processing goblinite.

Keep McQuixote away from them...
(Seriously, the windmill bit has to be the most famous part of Don Quixote!)
