So, region X starts as a normal biome, but then a big war happens and it's a war biome? The terminology's probably off, but is that roughly the idea?

If so, there's a bunch of spheres that won't come up much.

This isn't new. Cavein dust has been shoving people around for ages. The big difference is that now creatures skid along the ground.

The reason that the dust is called "boiling magma" is because the dust is treated as gas, and named what the gas is named.

Or a couple cage traps. Five mechanisms, five cages (with spares; 10-15 is good), and a 5-tile-long corridor will stop most Layer 1 baddies in their tracks. Forgotten beasts don't show up until later.

Or just make it harder. Combat in a peaceful area? Both combatants fall asleep. Hunters in a peaceful area? The bolts have a tendancy to miss. Cages in a free area? Those inside escape. Living people in a death area? Kill them ALL!!

You've got lots of good ideas, Naryar. Maybe you should make your own separate list of what you think would be good for various spherey biomes. (This was, after all, intended to be a place where we think about ideas.)

Although I'd like to mention that some ideas you and other people came up with seemed a bit gamey. Like being unable to butcher animals in a peace biome, or cages being destroyed the instant they exist on the map in a freedom biome.

Now, we've had gunpowder as early as 1st century AD from China. If we don't count that, then we've been using cannons since the 13th century. Using saltpeter to make things go boom is easily in the so-called medieval timeframe. Sodium, maybe not. But did have a lot of explosive capability. There's, like I said, saltpeter, then there's naptha, which is, what, petroleum? I'm sure I'm missing something else. Point is, if we want to add explosives, it's certainly not anachronistic.
Yup. The only argument is "But normal fantasy doesn't have explosives!" And I think that the orcs in Lord of the Rings used gunpowder, so nyah.

I don't know how much more 14th Century you can get than Salt Rocks + Heat + Carbon = Sodium.  But I am going to see what my Search-Foo skills can provide for you, to see if I can find documentation detailing a method clearly as era-appropriate.
I hope you understand my doubt. A: Coal has impurities. It's not all carbon. B: If no one did it until the 1800s, there's probably a reason for that.


If we did, somehow, get pure sodium, it'd probably be sprinkled along the ground indoors. I seem to recall that the human body has enough moisture to set off some alkaline metals; if not, or if the goblins wear shoes, there might be dew on the ground to set off the trap. Obviously, dwarves would need to wipe their feet before entering...

Thanks for the ideas! I'll add them and, of course, give credit where due.
Jake: The idea of magical minerals is neat. I'm going to leave these suggestions up for all spheres because A. it took a really long time to make, and B. I don't see any reason why there shouldn't be Courage- or Thrall-aligned regions. (I'm not sure what thralldom has to do with death anyways. Thralldom, as I understand it, means having someone under your control. Usually, death would interfere with that.)

Thnaks. Note, though, that about half of them only have something like "Not sure, I'll think about it later" or some kind of snarky comment about why a specific, say, tree biome is unneeded. Also, there are a lot of typos right now. I'll fix it in the morning or something.
