DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Desert Fortress and Pyramids!
« on: May 27, 2012, 08:27:18 am »
Erm, I haven't read pages 2 or 3 yet, but glass is a good idea. Just use minecarts or somesuch to dump sandbags down to the magma sea (ideally not into the magma sea), then work it down there, then have haulers haul the stuff back up. Or use minecarts, rollers, and lots of windmills if you're feeling dwarfy.

I second the restarting suggestion.
I thought that was implied by "Who wants new dwarves?"
Quote
No need for it to be something so extreme as a haunted area.
I thought that was implied by "It has been determined that further prisons should be set up in places where the wardens won't instantly die."

I'll have Bomrek "Dagger" [Whatever Last Name He'll Have], a political prisoner, who murdered several dwarven nobles. He's a diehard anarchist and pretty idealistic - albeit a murderous bastard too.
Skills?

can i take mafol and maybe when the time comes make him guard captain or even better the sheriff. Call him Higginbottom please

an idea for the prison could be something like the prison on chronicles of riddick. a giant hole in the floor with cells inside the walls and with the occasional release of bloodthirsty monsters to keep the prisoners on their toes.
...I forgot to update the OP, didn't I? Crap.
Erm, Zonnish I died a husky death. I noticed the husks fighting each other, but there were still plenty hunting the living dwarves, of which there was one by the end.

I have immigrants turned off.  I consider it a preemptive "nobody's willing to come here", but now I have to protect the children.

Waitwaitwait, what? When did this happen?

I agree. It seems a lot of others do, too--only one person (probably x2yzh9) seems to agree with this suggestion.

DF Suggestions / Re: Good regions being painfully good

I'd like to note that I don't like the idea of good lands "striking back" at dwarves and more than I like the idea of them actively aiding the dwarves. If good lands treated any races differently, it'd be the goblins and ogres and stuff--creatures with the [EVIL] tag, you see?

DF Suggestions / Re: List Filtering

Seems sensible. After all, Toady seems to be taking a quick feature break to fiddle with the interface, which has included at least one other searching-based thing (in the arena).

You're suggesting that naturally numb people who are further numbing themselves with drink are more likely to cry and rage than just suck it up and deal with it?

Dwarves aren't naturally numb, they're naturally unstable (if only due to copious alcohol intake). This isn't helped by their cultural tendancies towards a dislike of discussing feelings, leading to said feelings exploding out of them at inoppurtune times, and towards violence.
Also, consider this: A few other people note that a fortress in which a couple dwarves dying leads to an instant, unavoidable, unstoppable tantrum spiral is one that was spiraling into destruction beforehand. It's realistic that concerns like lack of housing, food, or whatever it is that's making your dwarves unhappy would lead to a time of normal function followed by sudden collapse when something bad happens, pushing them over the edge.

Urist McMrsSaberMonk has been miserable lately. She has lost a pet to tragedy lately. She has strangled her husband recently. She took joy in the slaughter recently. She has been attacked by a dead pet recently. She has been attacked by a dead spouse lately.

DF General Discussion / Re: What Would Urist Do?
« on: May 26, 2012, 09:29:41 pm »
Nothing. Nothing alive is left in sight.

What would Urist do if he found a small goblin child being attacked by beak dogs, but didn't realise it was a goblin at first?

GreatWyrmMithril likes raw adamantine, enough to be noted? Hm.

She's going to suggest trying to tame the caverns, especially the lowest layer. It has nothing to do with the adamantine spire. Nothing.
(Oh, and she'll strongly pressure the broker to buy any mithril being imported, steal it from the depot if needed, and insist on smelting it, no matter what it's being made into. It's sorta an obsession.)

Okay, I'll just write down stuff as it happens.
We've hauled the animals (a yak and a horse) to their pasture. We also have two cats and three each of turkeys and dogs. Seems excessive to me. Mafol and I have been digging out a little food stockpile and meeting area just underground, and Bomrek's cutting wood topside.
Two ravens showed up.
On the 4th, Dishmab reported that there aren't any fish to catch in the “central swamps.” Rats. Although maybe I shouldn't complain--I've heard of dwarves killed by animate mussel shells (usually while asleep). Shortly after this announcement, the first food stockpile was finished.

We all started to chat some. While Urdim, Etur, and Mafol don't have any neat nicknames, Rigoth likes being called Alra, Dishmab prefers Splint, and Bomrek the Brat insistson being called Simon. I'll refer to them by those names from now on.

A couple days later, as we were still moving food inside, Splint caught a mussel. A couple days after that, we hit the aquifer.
On the 11th, the mussel was prepared. Pessimistic Alra suggested immediately processing the shell, before it could reanimate. Urdim, agreeing, turned it into a well-crafted helm. Meanwhile, Etur continued processing fish (some salmon this time).
Around the 12th, “Simon” decided that we should move our supplies inside. On the 15th, the wagon was deconstructed by Mafol, before he returned to helping me break through the aquifer. The next day, he fell into the aquifer, the clumsy oaf. The day after that, the last of the gear--a bag and a rope--was moved inside, which is good, because that same day some cyan cursed ash drifted by. “Simon” and Etur quickly stopped cutting trees and gathering plants; Splint was told not to fish. Two days later, the cloud deifted off, but not without giving us all a scare. Urdim made a couple gauntlets and some leggings from more shells.
Splint decided to take these and prepare for if he was needed in the defense of the fort.
Right at the end of the month, another cloud of cursed ash came by. More ravens had showed up, and one floated into the cloud. Then several others. I noticed this while digging aboveground to pierce the aquifer. I had heard tales of these “husks.” Terrified, and noticing a husk attacking a non-husked raven, I ordered everyone to stay underground, until further notice. Shortly thereafter, I saw that Mafol had gotten himself stuck on a chunk of cavern floor, and told him to come down. He did. Then a dog and a cat went huskey. Then another dog. Then Alra and Urdim got stuck outside, the former getting several bones broken by a raven husk. Then two turkeys got husked. Then Alra turned into a husk...the non-husk dog bled to death...Splint went huskey...Simon showed bravery in beating up a turkey husk...everyone being attacked...Bomrek husked...all die...all MUST DIEJD MAONC,xWWM DIE!
[The last several words are scrawled in blood. The writing then resumes in a different hand]
I'm Urdim, cant tolk much. Everyone else husk. Not livestock--funny, theyre who we thought'd go 1st. Gotta run. Ogodravin. Gotarun owmylung whymi writing? Now yakshusk ogod...hosrhusk barly liv...why im not ded...notheraven...ohnogrwrgold, goodgoingway
[This page was smudged with blood. The journal was found clutched in the dead hands of Urdim Futureattics's corpse. It has been determined that further prisons should be set up in places where the wardens won't instantly die.]

Erm...who wants some new dwarves? I call a mason/potter!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Confusing artifact?
« on: May 26, 2012, 08:08:00 pm »
Yup, that'll work. On a similar note, by putting the dwarf into a burrow, you can get it to clean out an area of stone and/or control what the artifact's made out of.

I think bee stings inject bee venom. I don't think that that has any effect worth noting on a goblin-sized creature.

What happens when a prisoner is elected mayor?
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it. I'll probably say he's the leader of the prisoners.

I'll take the Miner/Carpenter.
Any name, personality traits, etc, you'd like in particular?

Isn't this the second artifact magnetite ring made in Brightwaters?
