DF Modding / Re: Modding Creatures to Trade

Let's see if I can rephrase that: What creatures are essentially guaranteed to be domesticaed by such a civ?

Both goblins and your modded race can exist in the same world. Maybe the goblins aren't being generated in the worlds you happened to generate, or the goblins are being killed off. If you know the gobbos are being generated, check legends to see if they're dying from fighting all of the time.

DF Modding / Modding Creatures to Trade
« on: May 25, 2012, 06:33:49 pm »
For various reasons, I want to be able to mod a playable race to send traders to fortresses without having all the abovegroundey common domestics. What would I need to do to do so? What creatures could I add the pack animal token to to guarantee that they would have some of them amed with [USE_ANY_PET_RACE] and [USE_CAVE_ANIMALS]?

The idea of a desalinating workshop is understandable from a gameplay standpoint, but how would it make sense from a realism standpoint.
Sorta the opposite with the single-tile workshops, come to think of it. Maybe it makes sense to be able to prepare fish on a normal table or whatever, but how would it be worse/different than a normal one to compensate?

[ETHIC:KILL_ENTITY_MEMBER:PUNISH_CAPITAL]
[ETHIC:TORTURE_FOR_FUN:UNTHINKABLE]

These are from the dwarven ethics. Any gladiator-style fights would probably need to be nonlethal and require volunteers to follow them.

My apologies for not having had time to work on the fortress this week, some emergency life stuff came up that has been keeping me completely occupied.  I should be able to get back to it this weekend.

It's completely understandable.

Have you ever had a family member go overseas into war and then die?

I assure you, it's not a "happy thought".

I've lost family.  I've also walked in on friends successfully committing suicide.  In neither case did I completely lose my mind from lack of hope and anything else to live for.  I might have if I was already a fragile wreck of a man, no stranger to despair.
Dwarves are all alcoholics, and well-known for being neither touchy-feelie kinds of people nor good at expressing emotions positively. Besides, how many forts have you had where your dwarves aren't "no stranger to despair?"

Hm. It's an interesting idea, although I'm not sure if it's worth coding.

The percents thingy, I mean.

DF Suggestions / Re: A Realism Fix for Platinum and Aluminum
« on: May 24, 2012, 06:28:03 am »
And I'm a bit doubtful as to the ability to locate aluminum at all (aside from bauxite, of course).

It's only the third most abundant element in the Earth's Crust, after Oxygen and Silicon.  Should be real difficult to find.  Pure Aluminum is rare, but Aluminum Oxides are so abundant as to be the basis of most of the mineral's known to man.

Seriously look it up.
Let me rephrase that:
I'm a bit doubtfulas to the ability to locate aluminum useable with pre-1400s technology at all.

Yes, it's rare.  But it is found natively and without a significant stretch of the imagination one would assume that the fantasy race known as "dwarves" would be able to mine for it and melt it down.  There is no concept of what kind of smelting technology is present in DF, so to say that it "should really be unsmeltable" seems like a massive, and presently unsupportable, assumption.  Small clusters; yes.  Remove, rename or reduce price; no need to.
Why do so many sources have to be contradictory?

I gave up long ago on trying to convince anyone to my point of view. After 9 pages of argument, those who have changed their POV have been few and mostly towards the beginning. We're getting to the point where we should be trying to figure out some kind of compromise. That's what I was trying to do.

This threasd is an excellent argument for reading the first part of the post first, and not skipping to the interesting-looking part.

DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress

This is a bit of a complicated question.

1. Toady, do you have any plans as to when (i.e. which caravan arc release) you will reintroduce dark fortresses, mountain halls, and forest retreats?
2. If not, what kinds of things will you add before reintroducing them? I recall you saying that forest retreats would probably wait for multi-tile trees, but are there similar "requirements" for before you re-add in mountain halls and dark fortresses?
3. Once you add them back in, how much will mountain halls, dark fortresses, and forest retreats benifet from the sorts of changes you made to towns?

I understand that platina isn't likely to be worked with, but my goal was to come up with a system for platinum that would neatly come to a sort of midpoint where everyone could concede a bit, not to make it 100% realistic.
And I'm a bit doubtful as to the ability to locate aluminum at all (aside from bauxite, of course).

Add those to things I need to research if I have any extra free time.

I still think non-justicey Warrior Orders are a good idea.

I never posted in the old StNPO threads, either. Is that an issue?
Yeah but I've done a few successions with you and seen you round though I do wonder the nature of the issue you've proposed, care to elaborate?
...Just based on the fact if I recall correctly you've never posted on a SNPO thread before...

See how I could have made an assumption about such an issue?
