DF Suggestions / Re: A Realism Fix for Platinum and Aluminum
« on: May 21, 2012, 09:15:28 pm »
If metals are crystals, then...erm...it's been a while since I've taken chem, so bear with me.

IIRC, metals are sort of a...an electron "sea," with all of the nuclei sharing all of the electrons in the vicinity. This is probably over-simplified, but it's also easy to fit in one sentence.
Crystals (like diamonds and salt) have a regular pattern that, barring imperfections, is repeated until the end of the crystal. This is what causes their brittleness and regular geometric forms.
Metals are malleable and rarely found in geometric forms.

Now to wait for people to correct everything I just said.

For what I pray is the last time:

IT MAKES NO SENSE FOR DWARVES TO INTERROGATE OTHER DWARVES. THEY ARE ALL THE SAME CIVILIZATION. THANK YOU FOR PUTTING UP WITH MY BOLD ALL-CAPS.

Dangit, ninja'd.

This needs to wait until A. wars continue to go on after worldgen and B. adventurers can take various roles in the world. Once that happens, it'd be neat. Probably the neatest thing that comes to mind immediately is what happens when you disobey your CO. You'd probably be punished, but what if you were already a hero before enlisting/being drafted? You'd probably trigger a big mutiny (or whatever they call it in the army), and might be suddenly commanding your own group of soldiers. So much possible fun...

In my opinion, we should always err on the side on not caving in. If it makes you feel better, imagine that the dwarves are shaving off some stone here and there to make it lighter.

Mir: I agree. Soil happens to currently have the same values as stone, though.

Lagslayer: Non-webbing FBs are not webimmune. Are you sure they're not stunnable?

And to the forums in general: What'll happen after Dolra finishes smashing the door? What will it do after that? If it'll probably wander back into the caverns, will a higher quality/stone door survive longer than a flimsier door?

As far as I can tell (I understand that English isn't your first language, if I'm interpreting your...that caption under your avatar correctly), that seems like a good idea overall. I just have two questions:

1. From a gameplay perspective: How does completely forbidding movement through a mined-out tile until a hauler can show up and haul it out NOT slow mining, and therefore early fortress-building, to a near-halt?
2. From a realism perspective: How does a wheelbarrow (occupying one tile, and able to have, say, a log stacked on top of that) hold an amount of earth so volumous as to completely forbid movement?

Perhaps we can come up with a different solution to a similar effect. For instance, we could suggest that creatures can only crawl through a tile including such a chunk of rubble. That seems to balance realism and playability. Maybe any dwarves hauling such a chunk of soil, and any dwarves passing that dwarf, would need to crawl, too. Of course, crawling might not be a perfect description of what they should be doing, but it's already in the game and has effects close enough to what we'd need.

It's probably like it was in the later DF2010 versions, starting...0.31.25?

Even wild animals have been reported as revealing ambushes.

I'll see what I can do. Unless maybe I just release Dolra on the goblins.

Pick up a ton of rocks, remove them, begin knapping.

Kobolds can't talk. Same problem with goblins (and humans, and dwarves) too, I suppose.
Of course, they could claim to know where treasure is to get you not to kill them, and sometimes...that treasure could be real.

DF Suggestions / Re: Stop the Werebeast menace!
« on: May 21, 2012, 06:27:12 am »
IMHO, the problem isn't so much that they survive worldgen so well as it is that they're underwhelming in those circumstances when you find them.

I have never had a werewolf attack my fortress, nor (as far as I know) a vampire migrate to one. Granted, I play a bunch of different fortresses at once, so my forts rarely go for more than a year or two (unless they've got something special), but still. In Adventurer mode, a vampire is a precious resource, and a werebeast is extremely rare.

On the other hand, if they're causing such worldgen disruptions, maybe in worldgen they need some kind of control. Maybe werebeasts of one kind all live together and sometimes get into fights and kill each other? As for vampires, I'm fairly certain they've been unaging about as long as (if not longer than) they've been undead, so that should stay; in addition, I'd like to say that having the spawn go back to normal after the head vamp dies doesn't seem right. Die or live on, your choice. On the other hand, do vampires make more vampires in worldgen?

If your beef is with things that can make more of themselves, what about...say, everything else? They can spawn completely new entities, rather than simply transforming old ones to their creature type!

To put that in a slightly different way: Engravings probably affect framerate, but not as much as a single dwarf or cat.

To all of those noting that many gems are opaque: Aren't most of those crystals? Metal =/= crystal.
