On one hand, the idea of escalating desires and demands, and that of a "noble tree," seems senible and good enough for me.
I don't have much to add, except to suggest that "needs" be mainly a factor of personality and the fort's status, plus some stuff based on social status. Of course, that might have been mentioned, but...geez, that's a well-organized wall of text.

To note about your posting style: That's not much like how  do it. I let ideas ferment in my head for a few days, type, organize as I go, and post. Of course, my ideas usually don't go into as much detail of EXACTLY how it should be as others' usually are...

Oddly enough, both of those suggestions have been made recently. Even more oddly, I completely agree with both of them.

It would be one thing if it, say, impeded movement or prevented building or something. But completely preventing anyone from moving through a tile? Too much. Besides, as Toady noted, a dwarf hauling such a chunk of soil shouldn't block travel (for gameplay reasons), so why should the chunk of soil itself?

This sounds like a good idea. 90% sure it's already planned, though.

How so?

It's never bothered me. I get a bunch of quests, do the easy ones, and move on to the tougher ones once I can handle them.

Or, in practice, I get a bunch of quests, wander over to the next town to get some followers, and get killed for accepting a kill-a-werebeast-that's-part-of-our-entity quest.

So, every tick, a tile is checked or something? Less bad, at least.

DF Suggestions / Re: A Realism Fix for Platinum and Aluminum
« on: May 20, 2012, 07:10:48 am »
The Aeolipile was around thousands of years before "real" steam engines were extant. You know why? No one looked at that steamy toy and thought about how to improve it into some sort of engine, or maybe they didn't need anything like that. They probably could have made steamboats, but no one wanted to, and scaling up the aeolipile to steamboat-sized proportions likely would have caused some problems.

My point is, just because someone has the ability to do something, doesn't mean they will. Just like the hypothetical "caveman knowing enough to build a nuclear weapon" thing I mentioned. Cavemen had all the tools they needed to come up with an atomic theory of matter, invent calculus, create tools that would let them make more complex tools that would let them make more complex tools ad infinitum, etc. But, for a variety of reasons, they didn't. Just because a modern-day person heading back to ancient Greece could have helped them turn the aeropile into a steamship engine doesn't mean they could have figured that out on their own--they had work to do, and only so much time to tinker with so many things.

In short, ancients possessing something similar to a modern technology does not mean dwarves should automatically have access to that kind of technology, especially if the ancients never harnessed the technology for anything.

Here's the biggest issues I see: Toady wants a realistic system which is easy to communicate with the player, and a realistic system that doesn't kill FPS.

And yes, checking a crapton of tiles every time someone mines something WILL kill FPS faster than the HFS. Even if it only takes mybe a tenth of a second per tile, that's still several seconds of lag once you get deep enough. Several seconds of lag, per tile. That's a ton of lag if you've got multiple miners.

An alternative solution would be to treat platinum and aluminum as gems instead of metal.

Well remember that the Dwarves are a race that live entirely underground at phenominal depths who have built their entire way of living on crafts and mining, they also can craft things beyond that of mortals. It isn't difficult to imagine that the Dwarves could be a bit anarchistic in their approach to metalurgy.
I believe you mean "anachronistic." Anarchistic would mean something like "in a way that defies laws."
Although that might describe dwarven metalurgy, too, come to think of it.

Quote
As well as we discovered many times before we have uses of metals before their discovery date. I believe that there are even a few Titanium objects created before its official discovery... but my research isn't up to date.

Though I have no problem with the removal of Aluminum or possibly its inclusion only in very specific circumstances (hey magical words are magic...)
Hm. I can definitely see some moody furnace operator going and smelting some native platinum or something, leaving the platinum bar to be treated as a mere curiosity until some other moody smith comes along and turns it into an artifact...

As to the idea of metal == gem: Metals and ores are opaque.

DF Suggestions / Re: Janitor (upgrade/improve the cleaning job)
« on: May 20, 2012, 06:37:33 am »
The cleaning job REALLY needs to be improved. I almost some dwarves walk right past a bloodstain on a wall that had been there for months just to clean the blood right from under the heads of a couple dwarves being attacked by a giant cave spider. Thankfully, one of my militia dwarves punched it in the cephalothorax before those morons could get themselves killed, but still...

Oddly enough, a good biome with an aquifer.

First, I tried a bunch of methods to pierce the aquifer. Then, a necromancer showed up, left a ferric ef corpse on my doorstep, reanimated a mule and a cat skeleton (this was a reclaim), and left me besieged. I missed the dwarven caravan before the undead sorta dropped dead. I started to recover the bodies and possessions of the fallen, but then a couple squads showed up and killed pretty much everything before I could deconstruct the bridge leading into the fort.

Did I mention these guys were KOBOLDS?!?!

Dear everyone,
What. The. Hell.

Alright, Urist McWoodcutterAndNewMason, you were attacked by the GCS while asleep. That's not your fault.
Urist McChiefMedicalDwarf, next time, WAIT to recover wounded until the wounded in question is NOT being attacked by a GCS. Your foolish action lead to your death and to the bedroom hall being filled with webs. Well freakin' done.
Other people who decided to recover one of the two wounded: Same deal.
Urists McCleaners: Why the HELL do you want to clean the bloodstains from under the bleeding dwarves' heads but not the one that's been on the hammerer's bedroom wall ever since that troglodyte was killed there?
Urists McMilita: What took you so long to get to the spider? If it wasn't so busy mangling Urist McWoodcutterAndNewMason and McChiefMedicalDwarf, you'd be dead.
Urist McHerbalist: I understand you were sleepy. Seeing that after the spider died, you slept on the bed with the cooling corpse of Urist McWoodcutterAndNewMason, it's probably for the best that you only got there after the death of the GCS.

Adil Spiderslayer Gatesteppe, slayer of Dangerscorned, you have my deepest thanks. Congrats on running up to the spider, through seas of webbing being continually renewed by the foul beast, then PUNCHING in in the cephalothorax a couple times. It is dead. You killed it. With your FISTS. You used those same fists to kill a troglodyte a while back, but that matters little. You are being promoted to militia commander and given your predecessor's steel pick and quarters. Train with it, okay? You probably need it, seeing as how you've never picked one up in your life.

Sincerely,
GWG, Ovrsr.

Dear Dolra, black-scaled tarantula with large mandibles and a poisonous bite,
You redundant moron, come and get it. We've got a new force to oppose you. You WILL fear the name of Adlil Spiderslayer if you decide to visit the land of Yelledpicks!
Bring.
It.
ON!
