DF Suggestions / Re: A Realism Fix for Platinum and Aluminum
« on: May 19, 2012, 04:00:20 pm »
Geothermal smelting has only been implemented a few years ago, and only in Iceland.

I understand it might not be realistic, but it's just...cool. I suppose that's something like why I want to keep platinum.

I think the idea hinges on the fact that, due to the lack of borders between tiles (not something I want, BTW), it's impossible to accurately guess how thick of a wall you'll get (without, y'know, counting with the cursor).

DF Suggestions / Re: Wheelbarrows for Construction & More
« on: May 19, 2012, 03:50:01 pm »
I think wheelbarrows should be used more.

For instance: In workshops (most importantly in mason's, craftsdwarf's, carpenter's, and mechanic's workshops, and in kilns and smelters), there should be a 'P'rofile option for "Use Wheelbarrow?" Similarly, in the 'o'rders screen there would be an option for the max wheelbarrows that could be used in building constructions, and similar options for dumping items, moving stuff to the trade depot, filling minecarts, etc.

All of these would be good to have chooseable, rather than automatic. After all, you only have so many wheelbarrows. What if you wanted to have your wheelbarrows used to clear out the cistern before the goblins showed up, but your craftsdwarves were hogging all of the wheelbarrows to make mugs?

DF Suggestions / Re: Zombie pathfinding
« on: May 19, 2012, 03:39:59 pm »
I think that, given the fact that they only raise dead hands, heads, and other bits like that, as opposed to "1 bite=1 new zombie," and given that zombies only enter the map a few at a time, zombies can't be counted on to arrive in large numbers. I think all limbs should be raiseable, so as to increase zombie-count, but that's not important right now.
Zombies shouldn't be tactical geniuses, but they shouldn't be "+cave spider silk trousers+-on-head stupid," either. They should be clever enough to guess that there might be prey on the other side of a door, and dumb enough to not know to retreat, but not much smarter or umber than that. Unless, of course, they're being commanded by a necromancer, in which case they should act as though they're as smart as the necromancer.

DF Suggestions / Re: HAND POWER!
« on: May 19, 2012, 03:16:35 pm »
So...basically, a neat little device that hooks a dwarf up to produce rotational energy?

Sounds reasonable. I mean, from a game perspective, everything that can be done with power can be done by hand, and from a story perspective, it's just a wheel they turn to do whatever. It could also be useful, say if you're filling a minecart with some kind of liquid, or giving a dwarf a ride, or pumping magma.

Maybe my assumption was right.

Also, bump.

DF General Discussion / Re: Azrael300's science on seed's
« on: May 18, 2012, 09:00:10 pm »
I think the seeds are just used as a base for the random number generation of everything.

There's a whole page of this somewhere on the DF wiki.

DF Suggestions / Re: Air Horns
« on: May 18, 2012, 08:55:58 pm »
It seems to me like air horns are a more modern thing. Gongs/bells seem reasonable, though.

Seriously? *sigh* Take a look at this, will ya (It's in paragraph 3)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipe_organ#Repertoire

See? Air horns DID exist back in those days!!! Have a NICE day, good Sir!!!

There's a difference between compressed-air airhorns (what most people mean when they say "Airhorn") and a pipe organ (which uses pumps of some kind to propel air through the pipes). Especially since pipe organs aren't usually hand-held.

DF Suggestions / Re: Alternate Means to Magic: Contract Magic
« on: May 18, 2012, 08:51:47 pm »
Just to defend my statement: Have you never forgotten something you do a lot? Maybe it's unlikely for a player, but I can totally see an in-game character forget something vital like that. Especially if they've been through a lot of hard fights lately, or if the guy in question is absent-minded.

DF General Discussion / Re: Note from a Google Search

Dang.

Well, I guess it's useful to know that Google remembers my searches. Eventually.

Embark with plenty of plump helmets and plump helmet spawn. Set up a four-seasons plump helmet farm. Add a farm with pig tails half the time and...something else (probably more plump helmets) the seasons that pig tails can't grow, and you're good to go.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Attracting Kobolds

Thread title was a bit misleading.

What did you think Sabreur meant?
...I'm not sure if I want to know, actually.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Usefulness of Minecarts?
« on: May 18, 2012, 08:14:25 pm »
I figured out my issues with my system with the simple but clever solution of actually telling them dwarves to draw from the wood stockpile. My wood is dropped into a secondary stockpile just off the main one, which in theory gives its wood to the main one, which is right next to the carpenter's workshop. In practice, they seem to prefer dumping wood down the hole. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that they get to ride down the track when they do so>

(Notes from a couple different fortresses)

Dear Urists McDeconstructors,
The rules are a bit harsher than they used to be. Please, step out ofthe way of any boulders coming down. Although, really, the cake was taken by the guy who took the stars out from under himself; shame he wasn't one of the guys who got injured notably.

Dear Urist McMiner,
You've brought a couple minor injuries on yourself, but this one was all mine. I'm sorry not to have taken into account all of the ways you could have dug yourself into the future well-shaft, leading inevitably to falling a few z-levels into the cavern lake. Good job of not dying.

Dear Urist McMilitiaCommander,
There were a few troglodyte attacks. After noticing one that attacked you in your sleep, what did you do? Chase it, beat it into a pulp, maybe smash its skull with your steel pick like you did with that troll? No. You were beaten back and retreated once one of your recruits showed up. And no, it doesn't really help that you were just going to get your pick; you should have had it to begin with!

Dear Urist McFarmer,
Good job of saving that cat from those olm-people.

Dear Urist McMiner,
The plan was:
Dig chute, carve tracks, make hole, send weapon-filled minecarts screaming down into the caverns to kill the olm-people.
No part of that plan involved you falling asleep within stabbing and certainly blowgunning distance of the olm-people, and also on the track. Thank Armok you woke up before they noticed you, and judging by the decomposition of the olm-person that the first minecart hit, it's probably good you weren't in its path.

Dear Urists McHauler,
Dig chute, carve tracks, make hole, send weapon-filled minecarts screaming down into the caverns to kill the olm-people.
What part of "weapon-filled" do you not get?

Sincerely et al,
GWG, Ovrsr.
