Build a bridge.
Read my post.

I was building a bridge. My mason took a tumble on the way to construct it.
Why would the mason need to cross the river to build the bridge in the first place? Make sure all of the materials are on the same side of the river as your mason.

I meant when they were out and about off-screen in the wilderness, post-debrachyzation. (What's Latin for "hand?" I think that what I just put was "removing arms.")

On my first read-through, I thought he meant second- and later-generation slaves, who would certainly be uneducated, if not stupid per se. (Not that I'd want a clever slave working in the forges, or even working with chisels for masonry.)

Also, reading again: Morals are ideas of what's good or evil. Morale is how happy people are.

Ideally, a bit of reaalism would be added--dwarves missing hands or arms would be more likely to die, and the survivors would gain Kicker Biter skills, rather than other ones.

But, yeah, wanderlust sounds neat.

Alright, since I finally noticed that reply, I will.

At some point when I have more time.

As always, slavery is unthinkable to dwarves. Until the ability to play non-dwarven races is added, this will--and should--wait until Toady has nothing better to do.

I'm glad to see that this isn't just "i wanna captur elfs and make them cut down tres just to pis them off mor" or something to that effect. It's actually a well-thought-out suggestion, even if the topic has been discussed to death.

That seems sensible enough.

Maybe there'd be different init settings for gems, stones, and so forth, so that you could also have gems sometimes not drop if you so chose.

The problem is that the GUI crashes before it can load, or whatever failing to initialize means.

What is the EXACT error message you are getting?
The Application Failed To Initialize Properly
Means that you do not have the .net framework installed, or it is installed improperly and must be reinstalled.
That's pretty much it. Different grammatical structure, same idea.

Is your .net framework installed and up to date? microsoft.com/net

...Maybe?

EDIT: Also, what are concubines supposed to do again?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Freezing Whole Rooms
« on: May 05, 2012, 02:08:01 pm »
Even if bucket brigades work (I think they do, I certainly recall doing something like that at one point), they'd be too slow and not very well timed. I want to be able to freeze a room with migrants in it, dig out the ice, and have my engraver(s) practice by smoothing and engraving the chamber; or to freeze the depot at a moment's notice if the traders are being jerks or it the elves didn't bring anyhing useful; or stuff like that.
Magma really isn't an option for me, I don't have magma-safe stuffor magma, and would preferr that my plan not involve too much FPS drop like magma pumps would do.

DF Gameplay Questions / Freezing Whole Rooms
« on: May 05, 2012, 07:10:25 am »
I've got this fort where I want to make lots of use of freezing stuff. Of course, I chose a freezing biome with an aquifer. However, a problem I see is that the watermight freeze beforeit goes more than a tile from the input. How can I get a whole room to be full of ice?

Also, what happens to submerged buildings when the water on them freezes?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Training Fish

So... build cage traps, allow area to flood to 4/7, catch fish, somehow get dwarf inside flooded area, haul fish off to also-4/7 flooded training area, train fish?

How do I get the dwarf to go into the water?

Get them onto a retracting bridge a z-levelabove the area and drop them in. Repeat until yourdwarves stop drowning.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Legendary Miner military
« on: May 05, 2012, 06:49:01 am »
Picks are great weapons because they only have one, powerful attack type with no less-effective attacks like pole bashes, flat slaps or pommel strikes. However, I've stopped using picks for my military because they seem to continuously get stuck-in, forbidden, and dropped or wrestled away. I had 30 steels picks available to a squad of ten (all with the mining labor disabled), but it seemed like at the end of every season they would all be unarmed and I would have to go around unforbidding all the dropped picks.
Use either mass unforbidding (d-b-c), or the stocks screen.

Someone mentioned backing up melee dwarves with ranged, can missed bolts hit the wrong targets? Like can a xbowdwarf hit another dwarf instead of the giant hulking megabeast if he misses?
No.

if friendly fire would be implemented, everyone is screwed
Yes.

Hey guys, if you are using windows all you have to do is unpack Masterwork and then there should be a 'Masterwork Settings' .exe that brings up the GUI. You should not have to mess around with any other files besides that. IIRC when you launch utilities from the GUI, such as soundsense, you will need to point it to the gamelog which is found under the 'Dwarf Fortress' folder. I hope that helps.

The problem is that the GUI crashes before it can load, or whatever failing to initialize means.

...I doubt that. Besides, stabbies will cause little cuts through scales and stuff fairly reliably, and enough cuts will cause enough blood loss to kill even a dragon.

This was most likely a PBCAC issue. Or a really weird bug.
