Background: Demigod min/maxed naga adventurer (from NW_Kohaku's mod...thingy), entered a kobold cave. She hacked her way through the entire cave and decided to check in the caverns for more treasure.

It turns out that the 100-odd kobolds in the upper levels of the cave were maybe half of the kobold living there. I dropped my pack, heavy with goods and kobold corpses (I was planning on becoming a necromancer), and watched my speed go up to almost double its previous value, before slaughtering several more. Eventually, I collapsed from exhaustion, which I knew was Bad. Then I fell unconscious from over-exertion. Then the game began calculating stuff for a few minutes.

After that, I was dead, having suffocated. A couple pages in, I noticed something which I thought was interesting. A couple pages later, I decided to take a screenshot of it.

That's right. Crowns can deflect blows. Oh, and either I woke up a few times or you can suffocate from headshots. But the crown part is the important one.

The moral: When in adventurer mode, find a steel crown to put atop your helm for added protection. Maybe I'll try seeing if other jewelry can protect other body parts, but it'll be difficult to get enemies to target fingers/etc, so maybe not.

Dear all nagas:

I'm just sitting back and watching the show. Sorry about trying to make an undead moat right next to the entrance.

Dear Urist McHammerNaga,
I know you need your rest. Can't it wait until after you re-re(-re? I lost track of how many times that corpse reanimated)-kill that ice wolf corpse? You're somehow managing to dodge while asleep, but try to wake up, please?

Sincerely,

GreatWyrmGold, Ovrsr.

EDIT:

Dear Urist McMiner,
I know you want a meeting with the expedition leader, but there's a bit of a process we need to go through first:
1. Get water.
2. Use water to keep the expedition leader, who was wounded in the line of duty, from dying.
3. Cure her enough that she will have a meeting with you.

You are needed for step 1. Either summon some magma and dump it on the ice, or dig down like I asked.
I don't want this fortress to fall because of your sloth.

Sincerely,
GreatWyrmGold, Ovrsr.

Dear Urists McEveryone,
When I told you that you weren't to hang out outside anymore due to the acrid slush falling from the sky, I MEANT it. Thank Armok it only causes nausea.

Dear Urist McMason,
I know the ice wolf corpses are scary due to the whole "not dead" thing, but BUILD THE WALLS! They aren't attacking, but if you don't put up those walls they might get ideas...I'm sending the militianaga.*

Dear Urist McHammerNaga*,
Kill those undead ice wolves. Er, re-kill them.
Don't go into the fortress, you have ice wolves to rek...oh, that's an ice wolf in the courtyard. Nevermind.

Dear Urists McEveryone,
Dump that ice wolf corpse in the moat before it tries to kill you all again, 'kay? It's sorta important.

Dear Urist McHammernaga,
Try not to die. I'd hate to have you attacking the fortress. And you'd better have a good reason for dropping your hammer (losing your hammer-arm's function counts).

Dear Urists McEveryone,
Report to the courtyard/moat/etc. We need everyone to help take these beasts down. And Urist McMiner, after discovering that your pick was capable of taking these things down, why...you PUNCHED it to death? Well, the pick would still be useful. Sorry about your teeth.

Sincerely,
GreatWyrmGold, Ovrsr.

*Kudos to NW_Kohaku

-----

Dear Urists McEveryone,
Good job. Let's see if we can get a fort set up before the next fiasco. But those ice wolf corpses seem to not want to kill you right now, so build the defenses, 'kay? It's only so long before they decide to attack or our yaks starve, you know.
Sincerely,
GreatWyrmGold, Ovrsr.

DF Suggestions / Re: String search of creatures in Arena mode
« on: February 24, 2012, 03:40:08 pm »
Definitely. There's lots of other string searches, like in choosing items for embark/equipping creatures in the arena, so it can only be two or three times as difficult as it sounds. Right?

DF Suggestions / Re: Good regions being painfully good
« on: February 22, 2012, 05:38:57 pm »
Hm, one idea that occurred to me is that good and evil dislike each other. Maybe good creatures should be hostile to evil ones and vise versa as opposed_to_life creatures are hostile to living ones. And maybe dwarves that live in good areas long enough are treated as good creatures, meaning that goblins hate you even more.

Also, mutually benifeting magic like I mentioned earlier.

DF Suggestions / Re: Vampires are missing an important weakness
« on: February 21, 2012, 04:20:23 pm »
I'm a fan of Bram Stoker vampires. I'd love to see some strengths/weaknesses like that. Prepare for a wall of text.

Dracula did not eat, needed to drink blood or he would age and die, and slept in a coffin. He could shapeshift into a bat, had +super+ strength and agility, could climb spider-like up walls, and the only way to kill him was through staking or decapitation, upon which he turned into dust. He could not walk or swim through running water, but he COULD take a boat or cross a bridge, though no specific penalties are stated for him doing so. The same goes for sunlight, it only states that he had an inability to be in direct sunlight, not that it would kill him. Holy anything could stave him off, so anything considered as a symbol of a god would keep a vampire out. Perhaps an item engraved with imagery of a god (save for the god that cursed the dwarf) could force a vampire to keep a tile away? Garlic had the same effect. He could totally bust in to a house he didn't own without asking, nothing like that is ever said in the books that I saw. Also, he has a hypnotizing ability, used mostly to plant thoughts in someone's mind, or to render a victim into a stupor.

Using a perpetual motion device to create a moat would be effective from keeping Urist McDracula from strutting on in, yes. But he could just climb over the walls, or bat across. It should also be understood that Dracula was only affected by a strongly presented holy item, so just having an engraving of a god would be uneffective, as would walking past a dwarf who happens to be carrying a holy something. He actually made his lair in the middle of an old church, and preferred them for future resting places. Also, he only reproduced by forcing someone to drink his own blood, not by draining their blood. Never heard that bit about beans. That's the lamest thing I've ever heard.

::EDIT::
Oh, and he could command wolves.

Why not the god that cursed them? Seems like that would be the most effective.
I think that fearful plants, commanded animals, etc, should vary by vampire. Just an opinion.

Suck it up like a TRUE dwarf! Bone armor and blunt spears for you, ye-of-insufficient dwarfiness!

He has complained of the lack of tables recently despite having enjoyed his own table recently?

DF Modding / Re: CE_BODY_TRANSFORMATION !!Science!!
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:38:39 am »
Interesting. The creature did retain its skills after transformation once I replaced the ANIMATE part of the reaction with RESURRECT. It seems animating a dead body prevents the retention of any skills.

Unfortunately, only the animation effect brings the body onto your side, while it immediately attacks you again if revived by resurrection.  :-\

Double check that the dwarf was friendly in life.

DF General Discussion / Re: What Would Urist Do?
« on: February 20, 2012, 04:25:38 pm »
Nothing. The spear belongs to those living dwarves over there.

What would Urist do if he had assembled all of the ores in the fortress for a masonry mood?

Sounds like your raw got corrupted somehow. It happens to me a lot. Try downloading a fresh download of DF.

DF Suggestions / Re: Rate of reanimation

I think that zombies should re-animate a few times. Not infinitely, though, and each time they should be a bit weaker and easier to kill.

That's nothing. One of my adventurers found a former hunter cave fish man law giver. Who crippled his guard in one shot, chipped my rib and knocked me out from pain a moment later.
