DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Huge migrant waves with low wealth
« on: February 17, 2012, 11:17:43 am »
Wow, that's a lot of kids.

I haven't gotten around to making a fortress in the new version, I'm too busy trying to make it to towns and towers and such without being jumped by bands of...something. Gangs, I think, although they seem to hate everyone, even outsiders. I'll bear this in mind and build a migrant-slayer ASAP...

DF Suggestions / Make Vampires a little less obvious?
« on: February 17, 2012, 08:21:53 am »
In a recent adventure, I met a vampire (my first, in fact). I figured it out pretty quickly.

1. He was a reptile man. (At first I thought he was a rabbit whit a legendary skill, which would have been an awesome bug.)
2. He claimed to be a tanner, a fishery worker, and a...something else for 10 years each, plus 17 years as a "ssscout" who stalked and killed tons of people.
3. He had almost 80 pages of items made out of human body materials. Well, except a few (pages of) ones made from dwarf body materials.

So, yeah, he was a vampire. I accused him of being such, and hilarity ensued, including about half a dozen cultists and a kill-stealing miner.
Problem was, I wasn't vampire-hunting. I was hoping to become a necromancer, and when a chance came to unmask the scaley sanguine-slurper, I did so.

Therefore, I suggest that vampires hide their booty (the hair-, bone-, nail-, tooth-, etc, jewelry), possibly in a pouch on their person, possibly in a bag somewhere in the room. Also add in some legitimate ways for reptile people and stuff to live in towns, without being vampires of course, and probably keep them from telling tall tales about their history. (I don't think reptile men live long enough to do all that this one said he did.)

Insert amusing conclusion here.

DF Suggestions / Stop the Gang Violence!
« on: February 17, 2012, 07:53:43 am »
About the title: It's the shortest, simplest way I could describe my topic.

A few times now, my adventurers have been ambushed in the wilderness. The first time, I thought maybe it was another human civ ambushing me as soon as I left the other civ's safe hamlet. The second time, I thought it might be the reverse, except that their leader was an overlord. The third time, I was an outsider and faced kobolds. Erm, right. (By the way, did you know a large dagger can cut a kobold in half?)

Back on topic, it seems that the various gangs are a bit too...enthusiastic about killing adventurers. I wasn't even near any towns that would support them, nor had I ever been! The only adventurer who did something interesting was the one who thought that maybe, the richly-garbed-and-covered-in-crafts-of-body-parts was, y'know, a vampire. Another issue for another topic.

Back on topic AGAIN, I think that criminal gangs should only ambush you if you either A. have lots of wealth and are known to have such wealth, or B. have killed a lot of the gang. If the former, and maybe the latter, you need to be relatively near the gang's hometown for it to ambush you.

Oh, and BTW: When I was typing this, I was switching between DF and internet. I got ambushed by goblins just outside of a fortress. The leader shot me, which hurt enough that I fell unconscious and was swiftly killed by a helpful Mr. Axegoblin. Crossbow power aside, these ambushes can be game-killing.

DF Suggestions / Re: Nerf giant insects and undead
« on: February 17, 2012, 07:30:35 am »
Giant insect swarm is bug/oversight, they weren't supposed to come in swarms [...].

So were man-eating carp and reanimated skins!

And carp were toned down. Reanimated skin was kept because it "made as much sense as a walking skeleton."

DF General Discussion / Re: Post your weird moments in exploring DF 2012!
« on: February 16, 2012, 09:16:43 pm »
I recently met a "Reptile Man Tanner" in a human town, in the most crowded building I had yet found. He had a bunch of *coins* in a masterwork bag, superior to masterwork clothes decorated with gems and the  body parts of rare animals (elephant seal tooth?), and seventy-seven pages of crafts made from human and (a few...pages) dwarf body parts. His weapon of choice? A superior-quality silver boning knife decorated with "bands of rectangular serpentine cabochons." He introduced himself as Imcor Mucklord, a very respectable name (not). He "wassss a ssscout" who admitted to killing sixteen humans while "sstalking Joinssubmerged," seventy-five while stalking "Coverworld," and seventeen while stalking "Blamelessssgrave," among others. He was also a woodcutter for 10 years, a fishery worker for 10, and had been a tanner for ten. Creepy...I accused him of being a night creature for fun, and due to suspicion due to the fact that he was 99% covered in human hair, bone, and so forth, AND that he claimed to be at least 57 years old assuming he could be a fishery worker from the day he hatched. He introduced himself as a vampire and told me to die. No kill list though.

Oh, and a couple of people who showed up in the Attack list were described as "Cultists." I spilled the vampire's guts as a civilian miner began carving through the cultists along with my companions (an adventureless adventurer and a former hunter) and the other civilians. Notably, the miner cut off some guy's hand. I decided to try punching out the vampire's teeth, which failed. The miner continued to cut off limbs, culminating in cutting off the vampire's right lower arm, which had pages of bracelets, earrings, and stuff on it. The vampire bled to death...

...and wasn't my kill, damnations. I located the miner and offered him a chance to join my party. He refused, so I reminded him of my impressive blows on the vampire (or spread the news or something), and he said he was unfit to brave danger with me. Oh, and he didn't have any services for me to do. Apparently, making him spill his guts literally and figuratively promoted me to Total Herohood. I drink some blood off my axe and chop off a cultist's hand, one of my pals spat out someone's tounge (which I plan to keep), chopped off the cultist's other hand, watched someone stab my kill in the head fatally, and split the skull of the last living cultist with one blow of my silver axe. I accidentally fast-travel after starting to loot the bodies, thankfully grabbing a couple pouches and the awesome knife the vampire had, then started stealing some of the rest of the stuff after returning instantly. Hey, he was wearing a long skirt! And a dress! I stole the vamp's pimped-out clothes to sell and a dwarf beard amulet and a pair of tooth crowns because they're awesome. I also steal the best of the cultists' clothes, including a giant sperm whale leather loincloth. After putting on my choice of swag (the purloined jewelry, aforementioned loincloth, a great horned owl hood that I imagine still had the owl horns, an emperor penguin leather cloak) and stealing some of the rest, I located the vampire's body parts, took them, and began my quest to transcend mortality.

What do shops look like, again?

Nish Firelances, a female dwarf and the sacred diamond of The Crystalline Communion. Worships Deler the Earthen Gem. Single.

Coincidence, or does DF understand this kind of stuff now? This was one of the first people I came across...

Next, make a creature that only appears in savage and/or evil areas, ideally in large groups. It's a bit larger than a cavy and looks something like a large, emaciated rat. Aside from being fast and fragile, the creature is unremarkable, except that A. its bite transfers the zombie-apocalypse curse, and B. it's angrier than a giant honey badger in heat.

Holy hell, that is a massive description!

Pft, that's no-wait, it hasn't finished loading.

*waits*
*jaw drops*

That...might be more detailed than Planepacked. Also, "The Buttery Beards?"

Mother of god! That's not a table, that's a book you can eat on!
A picture book, maybe...and the plot's terrible.

Sadly, the awesome stuff won't be coming until next version. However...are you familiar with the phrase "I have no mouth and I must scream?" Mod in a domestic creature that secretes slime, with a contact syndrome that disables the eyes, ears, mouth, and limbs of a creature. The victims will be blind, deaf, unable to speak, barely able to move or attack, and will still be alive. Invaders, and almost any non-citizen-dwarf creature, do not need to eat or drink to survive, and goblins and elves do not die of old age. Make sure the creature has no natural attacks, put one in a small chamber, and pit in a prisoner.
Bwah.
Ha.

HA!

...Oh, god. What has happened to me?

...they'll stuff it full of vengeance and fling it back out at us.
And then we can build this large, wooden badger...

C'mon lads! I found this neat hidden passage into the dwarves fortress! It's great! Really long and thin, and there's all these slits built into the level above, for air I guess!

We'll show these stunties whose boss!
Yeah! And don't forget to take off your helmets so you don't make noise if your head hits the ceiling!

...

Hey! I found this new entrance! It's built right into the side of this black chimney thing! All we have to do is break this basalt floodgate! It's even nice and warm! Nothing could go wrong![url]

I, like many others am already (very slowly) working on my own interpretation of a DF style game.

Pros: It's multithreading and 64 bit, with a 4 dimensional world model (as in portals to parrellell worlds... "stairs" can go up, down, 'in' and 'out')
Cons: There are no characters (NPC or player), just a hardcoded world model; and time does not pass.
That sounds interesting, once you add something to do and time passing.
