DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: All them captured badgermen - wat do?
« on: December 28, 2011, 03:43:35 pm »
I like modding them to be tameable and trainable. If I could, I'd assign them specifically to important dwarves, so they have a nifty "honor guard."

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: December 28, 2011, 03:42:40 pm »
The moment when Urist McGrumpy decided to visit my fortress. I noticed him when he was quite unhappy and I wanted to cheer him up (sadly it was too late - happiness about 20). But then I found out...
First he went to my meeting place and complained about lack of chairs (well I admit 2 chairs for 30 dwarfs isn't much :D).
Then he made grudge wit about 20 other dwarfs (still don't know why - perhaps they were stealing his chair).
After that he went on a bridge which was hanged across a volcano.
Next brilliant move was to "throw a tantrum" and destroy this bridge he was standing on. :o

This wasn't like tantrum described on magmawiki.

In fact mood in my fortress went from happy to ecstatic (one dwarf went to happiness about 1600 - from dwarf therapist).

Now I have to chose whether to make him a slab or wait for his ghost (this could be even more fun :D).
Wait for the ghost, and let him haunt the moat as a reminder to your dwarves of the dangers of stupidity.

There are a couple of possibilities - you could have an underground lake draining into a magma pipe. The water hits the magma, obsidianizes, and drops, causing the message spam. If the lake is touching a map edge, this process will be infinite.
I've had volcanoes spawning a z-level UNDER a lake's surface. They stopped collapsing once the tube got covered in obsidian.

All sleeping dwarves are "unconscious." Just FYI.

It's going to be hard, not being close. However, I advise that you connect him with a tutorial and be ready to answer questions. E-mail is useful.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why it's easy, when it's not ment to be?
« on: December 28, 2011, 11:44:44 am »
I've noticed that DF has a tendency to throw stuff too tough to handle when I'm interested in a nice little fort, and only paper-mache undead when I'm hoping for a challenge.
DF...may be the first ever program...to have developed SENTIENCE! Or something.

Good luck getting the skin off, though. That tends to hurt.

I think someone bred dragons. Probably multiple people. I vaguely remember something about removing the megabeast tag...

Did you do any modding to the entity?

Currently, a dwarf can literally punch them to death, thanks to some hacked-in stuff Toady added in to keep an entire fortress from succumbing to a single skeletal carp or marmot.

GreatWyrmGold, the problem is not that it's hard to kill them, it's that if a Dwarf kills them, it becomes an enemy of the civ. And a Dwarf that kills that Dwarf becomes an enemy of the civ.

Until all are dead.

Luckily the cougar took the fall, so no probs there :P
Yeah, I thought that the cougar dying would make him the enemy of the fort (or, more idealy, that the cougar would kill the dwarf, but that failed to happen before I passed on the save, so yeah).

Come to think of it, will dwarves get bad thoughts if a dwarf rots under ground?
Only if they notice the miasma.

Any progress?
Sorry again, computer troubles+RL=little internet time. Worse news is a-coming, though. Short version: I got to around Autumn, then the save got screwed up and I got angry. Go to the next guy, sorry.

Very nice advice.

Although, there's always the option of, you know, not fighting next to water.
Good luck.
