DF General Discussion / Re: How Close are we to the Next Release?
« on: September 22, 2011, 10:38:57 pm »
Notch: Millions on his bank account, staff of people helping him.
Toady: His brother and around 3k a month.

Minecraft - Adventure Update: Three new critters, experience system that does nothing, some cosmetic changes, villages without NPCs, Dungeons.

Dwarf Fortress, next update: Vampires, werewolves, mummies, zombies and skeletons are back, necromancers, 8 new animals from the donation drive, each one of them completely different from each other. Whole cities, complete with NPCs, furniture traceable on the world gen, sewers, catacombs, dungeons, interactions as an adventurer...

Can you really compare them?

Minecraft - 3D graphics. Game balancing required during development.
3D graphics were an awesome selling point when first invented, say Doom or Tomb Raider I era. Now, you need REALLY good graphics to sell a game on that. Minecraft's graphics are, by what I assume is stylistic choice, not ground-breaking. Therefore, Minecraft sells on gameplay, which, as thvaz noted, are less diverse (if also a bit less...perverse?) than DF's.

Personally, I'm fine with whatever Toady can do, but hope for a finish on what he's doing now and a few loose ends so he can release it. After all, DF players are much better bugtesters than Toady due to our numbers and twisted intellects.

I think going the faux-metal route is best...but then it can be melted.

Goblets are made in sets of 3 with a base value of 10 each (before material and quality modifiers). This makes them better.

But how do you get enough star sapphires to make Isidar Mithrim? Assuming you mod in a gem blocks reaction.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / D.O.R.F: Dwarves Overcoming Ridiculous Failures
« on: September 22, 2011, 10:09:22 pm »
This is a place where I intend to try to collect and acronym major achievements in Dwarf Fortress history.
Acronym Count: 14

A.R.G.H.M.Y.S.P.L.E.E.N.: Agonizing Realms of Greatly Harmful Medical Yore; Stories of People Leaving Every Extremity Nowhere. Medical !!SCIENCE!!. Many dwarves killed in the name of keeping dwarves alive.

B.U.R.N.I.T.A.L.L.: Big, Unplanned Really Not Idiot-proof Tower; A Legendary Land. The fortress. A succession fort from way back in the 2D version, Boatmurdered had the first recorded magma cannon, killer elephants, lots of goblins, more ashes than you could find a use for, Horrors of the Underground, and ended in a tantrum spiral that had but two survivors, one a child.

D.O.R.C.P.U.T.E.R.: Dwarves Operate Really Complex Primarily Useless Type of dEvice for numbeRs. A computer in DF, built in a cave with a bunch of rocks. Needs new acronym.

E.L.F.K.I.N.G.: Eternal Legend; Forest-Kin In Nobility of Ground-dwellers. The tale of Cacame Aweminidae, the Elf King of Dwarves.

F.I.R.S.T.U.R.I.S.T.: Fairly Incredible Revelation of a Singular Traveler: Urist 1, Riveting Installments Show the Tale! The original Urist.

H.A.L.L.E.G.E.N.D.S.: Hall Amazingly, Lovingly Lathered with Great Eternal Names of Dwarves' Stories. The Hall of Legends, full of famous tales.

H.E.A.D.S.H.O.T.: Headshoots, Evermore Another Dwarven Succession Home Of Terror. Headshoots is a succession fortress which I don't know much about, so this info will need to be expanded on.

M.O.S.T.I.N.T.E.R.E.S.T.I.N.G.D.W.A.R.F.: Many Overtrained Skills to Try to Incrediblize (Not Truly English) Really Excellent Super-Trained Incredibly Nimble Ground-Dweller. Morul gets to legendary in every skill then extant.

M.U.R.D.E.R.B.R.O.N.S.E.: Many Unnamed Ripped-apart Dwarves Eaten by Rashas, Beast-forgotten; Revenge, Oggez Now Slain; Excellent. Oggez Rashas was a forgotten beast. It attacked Bronzemurder, a dwarven fortress, which ended with only three survivors. Will they survive? Read this illustrated tale to find out.

O.O.P.S.: Oblivious Overseer Pierces Spoilers. Well, someone is mislead into releasing some spoilers. The big ones, menacing with spikes of not-secret.

Q.U.E.E.N.M.C.B.A.D.A.S.S.: Queen of the Underground, Elves Eat her Neighbors; Many Creatures Blown-Apart Dead; At-end Single Survivor. Tholtig Cryptbrain, the last of an era, who slew 2,340 elves and a cyclops. That is the longest recorded kill list of ANY dwarf.

S.E.A.S.E.R.P.E.N.T.: Sphalerite Evermore Amazes; Strange Experiments; Reptiles, Pachyderm-Eating, Now Tamed. Sphalerite's Sea Serpent Stuff.

S.E.Q.U.E.L.I.N.T.H.E.I.R.Y.: Second Event. Queen Underground Enters, Leaves Insane. Now The Headshoots Event In Relatively Yorish. End of the acronym needs work, but currently means that it's supposed to be in the same world as Headshoots. It takes place in an evil glacier biome and is sieged by abominations "born of Headshoots" (i.e. modded in and inspired by Headshoots). I don't know much about it, but I think the queen came early and went insane. Or maybe that was Headshoots.

V.I.D.E.O.: Various Idiosyncrasies Depicted on Electronic Optics. A video (in German), depicting dwarves going through various things all major fortresses deal with, from weird engravings to "On Break" doctors to catsplosions to killer unicorns to floods to an engraving-of-cats-splosion to massive migrant waves.

This is nowhere near complete, but I will add to this as time goes on. Partly to stockpile !!SCIENCE!!, legendary tales, and miscellaneous awesome stuff in one place, but mostly because I like making acronyms. Feel free to add suggestions of SCIENCE (flames optional) or stories that you feel should be added.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / D.O.R.F: S.U.B.W.A.Y. Transportation System
« on: September 22, 2011, 09:01:25 pm »
Dwarves Overcoming Ridiculous Failures: Subterranean Underground Bus-like Warrior Aerial Yelling transportation system.

(I like acronyms, don't you?)

Anyways, the D.O.R.F. S.U.B.W.A.Y. is an idea for a transport system that involves using "controlled" cave-in dust to propel dwarves across a moat into battle (or whatever). I've been doing some arena testing, though, and the results have been less than promising: The dwarves fly a tile forward and fall down. Any ideas of how to improve it?

Design I've been using:
Code: [Select]
WWW
WXW
WDW
...
W=wall
D=dwarf
. = open space (moat)
X=where chunk of stone lands

Balrogs don't have wings.
Shows how great a writer he is, huh?  Leaving it up for the reader to fill in ALL the details...
What's wrong with that?

The imagination is far more powerful than words or images can describe.
And I always imagined balrogs to be the Demon--horns, on fire, wings, black skin, glowey red eyes, the works.

In a feeble attempt to remain on-topic, try something...dwarfier. Farthen Dur (from Eragon, city in a giant volcano shell, smaller "city-mountain" made of marbe, etc) comes to mind, but finding a big enough mountain to put it in, even if you let artificial mining hollow it out, and making the Isidar Mithrim (big star sapphire, "dragon stables," had a huge spiral staircase running down next to it, etc...)will be major problems, not to mention hollowing out the mountain and importing all of that marble...ideas?

I sure hope more people signup to be overseer! I guess when you're done I could do a long turn(more than one year) until we get some more people. I'd need Wyrm's permission first of course.
Go ahead, I guess. I'd volunteer for another go, but I don't know how the FPS would hold. Hopefully someone else will come...

Two other things: Don't forget the megaproject, and I figured out the web thingy. Go into the reqion file's raws, open creature_standard, go to the goblin castes, and change [WEBBER:OBSIDIAN] to [WEBBER:INORGANIC:OBSIDIAN]. Stupid me, why didn't the errorlog say something, et cetera. Go ahead an change it if you understand how. And maybe see if you can weave obsidian strands.

53427
dwarves have the best rebuttal to anything.
The Necro910 Effect, correct?

Obviously.  What else could it be but
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Water? YOU SAY WATER?

How can you even...

HOW DARE YOU, YOU INSOLENT LITTLE ELF

Necro cancels record keeping: Throwing tantrum.
An orthoclase floodgate has been destroyed!

But if you mix it with
MAGMAAAAAAAAAA
then you get
OBSIDIAAAAAAAAAAAN
which is very dwarven.
As the first person I know of to use the word obsidian like that, I demand the right to be angry at your use of it even though you couldn't have possibly known about it! Wait, that sounded better in my head...
Er...
Keep up the good work, Crustypeanut!

53428
You left out the [POP_RATIO] tags. I added them, said that for ever four males there would be four females, one male webber and one female webber. Also, right now they shoot obsidian webs. I'm leaving that as is for now, but I can change that too if you want.
Obsidian, iron, it was something creepy and inorganic. I did this a while ago. They actually web things? That's good.

Quote
In case you're interested in the specifics, having [POP_RATIO:10] in one caste and [POP_RATIO:1] in another means that for every ten of the first caste that are born, one of the second is. Any castes without the [POP_RATIO] tag are equally likely, but I'm not sure how they compare to those which have the tag. I always put it in every caste, just to be safe.
I forgot the pop ratio tags? Oh, I forgot that I forgot.

I didn't manage to get very far today, so I'm going to hold off until tomorrow before updating. With luck I'll have something more interesting than 'we hid from goblins and dug a lot'. At least the underground farm plots were finished before the siege, so food shouldn't be a problem...
Good. Can't wait for the update.

I'm sorry if what I say is disrespectfull to everyone here, especially programmers.

But I came to the conclusion that Toady One is like Notch. And I mean exactly like notch.

Except ironically Notch is the faster of the two.
Alright, you've got my attention. Name one way in which Tarn Adams is anything like Markus Persson. One. I dare you. One. I'm listening.
Markus is the guy who makes Minecraft, right?
Both go mainly by odd nicknames among their fanbase and are making sandbox-style games in which you defend yourself against fiendish monsters and build massive structures. Both also have caverns, magma, and a physical hell. There, about four similarities.

53430
Hopefully wyrm discovers that randomconstructs is back!
Yes. Thanks. Updating the list ASAP.

About the goblin webbers: Oh yeah, I forgot. I tried to get some goblins to shoot webs of iron, only supposed to be about 1/5 though. Did I succeed there? If not, do you know what I can do to fix it?
