Suggesting you use 5 further subjects to confirm 3-story fatality rates and use the other 10 to estimate 4-story fatality rates.

Dear Urist McChiefMedicalDwarf,
You have diagnosis on. You "find helping others rewarding" and are "willing to compromise with others." Diagnose the patient that's missing a foot already!

Sincerely,
GWG, Ovrsr.

Dear Overseer GWG
C'mon now Boss, both you and me know what's wrong with the fella, he's missin' a foot! Don't take a doctor to tell you that. Now I'm gonna go have a drink while he figures out how to stumble around of there's nothing else ya need.

Dear Urist McChiefMedicalIdiot,
No matter the injury, even if it is a scratch that heals within a week, as soon as the patient is brought into the hospital area he needs to be diagnosed before anything can be done. So hurry up. Obligatory threats involving magma.
Sincerely,
GWG.

I remember reading that CC's insanely low weight makes for bad mail shirts. Makes sense, less inertia and all.

How are you going to keep attracting immigrants after the deaths mount up?

Health Insurance.  Free Health Insurance.
On the down side, no life insurance.

I remember reading somewhere that falls of 10+ z-levels remove the living tag or somesuch from a falling critter, but that seems suspect. Seems like a nice, round death-number, though.

And, to Dr. Killpatient: Not possible, unless you are content with dismemberment not including the head and the common death from acceleration-induced decapitation.

This is how all fortresses should end. A massive siege, a breakdown of backup plans, clowns, and a Last Stand. Good job on surviving it!

Dear Chief Medical Dwarf,
Next time I turn off most of your labors so you can go diagnose someone, please let me know that I forgot to turn on your diagnosis labor.
My fault,
GreatWyrmGold, Overseer.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Oh shit this will be fun. Help?
« on: September 16, 2011, 08:03:20 pm »
Well, the hope is just to keep the civilians away from the thing. Turns out the poison vapors only blind and cause fever. And... well maybe more but it's too early to tell. Luckily, plenty of war dogs down there to distract it. Unfortunately, most of them are now blind. The good thing is, an Axedorf made quick work of it. Chopped it clean in half after a few blows. Sadly, he got a wiff of the vapor. His sight will be missed (but he's getting around just fine... I think he's faking it).
Blind civilians will run into the fort to escape danger unless Danger is right next to them. This is instead of running away from Danger (including cute, fuzzy wild animals) and repathing to the fortress later. Blindness is not bad. Too bad you killed it, you could drop it into a pit, put a ceiling over it, and carve fortifications around Mr. Blinder. Meeting area, hope the dwarves don't run off to fast, a little training for your docs, and bam! Dwarves who run for the safety of your fortress.
Some people advise putting blind people in charge of siege operating, since they won't run from their targets, but that seems a bit...stupid. Putting Urist McBlindasagiantcavebat in charge of the single most destructive device in the fortress?

Except they won't kill each other.
Except for the zombie clowns.

Currently, stonefall traps are comparable to loading a weapon trap with a training sword at a lower cost, but also being one-shot without distracting a mechanic.

Say, can clay load stonefall traps?

This.
Is.
AWESOME!

Maybe once you get your doc leveled some, you can test the skills needed for treating a magma victim?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Who is necro910?

...Also necro910 was here long before I came around...
Not actually. By your profiles, you were around before he was.

As opposed to Necro's
"Date Registered:

Unless Necro made a new profile?

I remember when Necro joined and started his trope. It's a worthy one ;)
...He only joined in April? Wow. I also thought he had been around longer.
I think people were using MAGMA! as a soultion to everything before that, but not in all-caps like Necro does.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Smallest Self Sustaining Single Dwarf Fort?
« on: September 16, 2011, 07:20:04 pm »
Smallest possible? One soil/mud tile, one open space tile over safe water source. Needed supplies: One rope, one block, one bucket, one plump helmet seed. Turn on the planter and architect labors, and one other varying by block type. Build a well and a farm plot. Have the farm plot grow plump helmets. Maybe have another tile for a food stockpile. Maybe include a few more plump helmets.
One yarn/cave spider silk rope for $*30, one stone block for $5, one wood bucket for $10, one plump helmet seed for $1, and let's say two prepared lungfish for $4, for a total of $50 plus 3 tiles** of space, one dwarf, and a bit of waterworking. Simple!
*$ used because I don't know how to make that dwarfbuck symbol.
**Okay, three plus at least 12 squares of walls, ideally dug-out soil. I'm assuming the best design is:

 HHH
HH,H
HO,H
HHHH
(H is a wall, , is a floor, and O is the well)

Ideally, the design would drop the dwarf in from above, mainly for DWARFY-points. Might (is) not the best idea, but meh.
