I think it should be possible to make non-stone slabs, for at least three reasons:
1. No-digging/no-stone/etc challenges wouldn't have to come up with some insanely elaborate way to retrieve bodies unless they want to.
2. What is a better tribute to your legendary++ axedwarf who died fighting the goblin hordes, with multiple megabeast and untold goblin kills to his name, than a GOLD TOMBSTONE? A cotton candy one, of course! Or a dragon bone tombstone, or a goblin skull tombstone, or a diamond one, or...
3. It's realistic. How much harder than carving wood into a block or making a bar of metal into a block can carving or forging a slab be?

Also, odd-material slabs could A. explain the shops' wooden signs and B. allow more options for secret slabs--elves carve secrets on wood, a deity of wealth and metal might bestow a secret onto a gold slab, a legendary gemcutter who discovers some gemmey secret might cut a star ruby slab, etc.

(FYI, even though RL gladiatorial arenas tended to be made for more people than DF can handle without forcing your CPU to commit seppuku, I am in favor of eventual gladiator battles. Especially for crimes. At least when your legendary weaponsmith is killed for not making 13 gold scimitars, he'll die with style.)

Many people enjoy catching their wooden craft artifacts on fire.  Thieves will snatch it and burn themselves, and because it's an artifact it will never degrade.
And it gives you something dwarfy to do with the most useless, undwarfy artifact possible!

1. How would you make a reaction to turn skulls into helmets? I could look it up but I'm not a very good modder and would bring it here for everyone to point out the major problems anyways, so...I know (think?) the reagent would be a body part made of skull and the product would be a helm that gets its material from that reagent, but want confirmation and correction.

2. Aside from coolness, how effective would skull helms be?

As to it keeping emptying: Think about it. You are having dwarves drop a bucketful of water at a time into a "pond" whose purpose is to empty itself out into your dining hall.

Somehow, even though IRL arenas and theaters were intended for audiences much larger than what DF can handle without requiring a mercy-kill for your computer, I like the idea of gladiator arenas. They're just so iconic in fantasy literature.

I like the general concept. Especially if it involves procedural generation of chimeric creatures. Imagine a badger man/carp merfolk: They remember 40d, and want revenge! Or the ludicrous minotaur-headed cat-bodied minocataur, or a roc/dragon griffinesque hybrid as a megabeast, or a magical ritual to combine goblins with rabbits for punishment, or what-have-you. But it can wait until Toady has time.
