Seriously, aside from staying glued to hamlets until you find someone willing to go off with a crazy guy with a sword or modding in a race capable of defeating bogeymen (harder than you'd think), there is NO way to guarantee success that I have found. Even HITTING the %&#<( things is nigh-impossible...

Yup, not only do I build massive farms early in fortress history (mainly to train up miners and find something to do with all of that soil), but EVERY player so far (...Are we up to 3 now?) has had a different idea of how to run the fort. The sieges haven't helped.
