DF Suggestions / Re: Anti-Burrow
« on: July 26, 2011, 07:14:27 pm »
Those can all be solved with normal burrows and/or restricted traffic areas.

This will not in any way prevent dwarves from traveling to those zones. It only affects the weight of pathfinding through them.
Indeed.

1. Burrows will not stop a dwarf from wandering through another area. So, while a dwarf will not store a log outside his burrow, he will move outside if it leads to a quicker path than staying outside. More importantly, you have to constantly re-designate the burrows if you want to, you know, mine.
2. Restricted traffic will not stop someone from wandering through it if the path is at least 13 times faster than the normal-traffic route.

DF Suggestions / Re: Different Society Types

First, let's consider the racial images in DF.

Dwarves: Hard-working alcoholic ferroholic latin-for-diamond-a-holic short warrior-folk.

Humans: Greedy tall people who are somewhat claustrophobic.

Elves: Slender people who love trees and somehow make stuff out of wood without harming them, and don't give a crap about eating people.

Goblins: Evil people who serve demons and raid others.

Kobolds: Very small kleptomaniac carnivores who aren't bright enough to make their own weapons.

So, I suggest the following:
Humans are more strong-willed, bringing the least of their complaints to their leaders, which can help avoid tantrums. Conversely, they get unhappy thoughts from being underground.
Elves can somehow draw wood from trees without harming them and shape them into stuff. They also butcher sentients. They prefer sleeping under the stars and get sad thoughts from seeing most kinds of buildings.
Goblins are full of backstabbing and hate. They have trouble farming, so they hunt and raid for food. They prefer not to craft stuff but can if they need to. Goblins can also summon lesser demons, maybe greater ones too with a blood sacrifice.
Kobolds can send out thieves. They don't mind sleeping on bare stone or soil as long as they're inside.

DF Suggestions / Re: Animal Hunger (this is complicated)

Cool idea. However, releasing it bit-by-bit would be best, simply so that we have time to adapt. First some more domestics, then wild predators, then other wild animals, then...etc. Argue as you like.

I have the save and will start as soon as I am able.
Excellent. Please don't kill Goldendagger.

They can't regenerate limbs. At least, you can't mod them to do so.

Also look up the Fortress Defense mod. And a few other ones, too.

Oh, and since you already know about the demons, I guess I should warn you about the zombies. They are not too scary now, but their miasma will sicken dwarves and kill your FPS almost as much as releasing the demons will.

I know! Build faux boats that everyone lives on!

THEN MURDER THE BOATS!

53784
Tholtig Cryptbrain?

But yeah, it would be cool if Tholtig or Cacame could have become gods.

First off, stop giving your sheriff an axe.'

Second off, once mayors stop jailing legendary weaponsmiths for not making 5 pig iron beds or whatever, this will be a very good idea.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Colonizing the Magma Sea
« on: July 24, 2011, 07:08:41 am »
Dwarves have colonized the mountains. It was too easy.

Dwarves have colonized the surface, not looking into a mountain for anything. We imported metal and burned wood for charcoal. It was too easy.

Dwarves have colonized the caverns, accepting no help from above. It was too easy.

Dwarves have even colonized the hidden spoilerey "Fifth Layer," and while hard as a noob working out the DF2010 military system and slow as your chief medical dwarf faced with medical work, it has been done quite enough.

There is only one frontier left: The great magma sea.

-----

How would you go about colonizing the magma sea? Simply dropping in water would not work, as the semi-molten rock would eat up the obsidian. However, once you figure it out, there are some obvious challenges to do:
-Relocate your entire fort to the magma sea.
-Grow plump helmets on muddy magma flows (SMR's floors).
-Search for cotton candy in the magma sea. On foot.
-Magma crab farm, anyone?
