Once I finally understood what the OP was saying, I have to agree with nogoodnames.

Because cave-ins are currently nerfed as far as triggering goes.

Why does my broker, who has little to nothing to do the rest of the time, choose to go on break in the three times of year he or she is needed?

Hence my suggestion of a silk-farm-type set-up. Of course, you shouldmprobably add a trench to keep archers away, and maybe a nearby marksdwarves' platform in case of elite archer, but it should work.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to get soldiers to spar?
« on: July 23, 2011, 06:25:23 am »
They show up as their civilian professions when they are not being ordered to kill small, furry animals. Otherwise, they are mainly recruits.
sounds like the squads are not active.  you'll need to go into the military menu, and (s)chedule the squads to train.  i take it you have also defined barracks?  i'm fairly sure the squad will need one designated for them to train, as well.

oh, when you schedule, you do so by alerts.  personally, i use the default "active/training" alert level for training.
At least two from each squad must be training at each time. I did have barracks. The alert thing...yes, I think so. I don't remember, the fort in question was lost on my old flash drive and I'm just asking for next time.

I feel fairly happy about knowing this now, but its a bit tricky.  You open up the military screen, go to alerts, and then move down the Active Training.  This is important, you have to go to active training, THEN move to the squad and hit enter.  It basically makes them active.  It took me a while to figure that one out.  Then you go over to the scedule and set their training schedle and patroling scedule ect.  (Scedule is eluding me today, the spelling)  Then the dwarfs will set up lessons and sparring sessions.  I've found it works best to have 2 dwarfs in a squad to get them to train, otherwise you have to have all the dwarves participating and nothing gets done :D

Hope that helped.

And yeah you need to have a barracks that needs to have training for that squad activated.
Uh...I'll make sure my dwarves are set to active/training next time.

Well, maybe this gigantic monstrosity of an eagle was supposed to swoop down and eat the dwarf for lunch, then still have room enough for some snacks at the trade depot.
Once again, it's hard to fly of your wings have been SHOT OUT BY AN ALCOHOLIC MIDGET.

Do you mean, are they in squads? Yes.
Do you mean, do they lack other labors? No.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cage Traps
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:30:29 pm »
Make sure someone has the mechanic labor. Build a mechanic's workshop and queue up as many Construct Mechanisms jobs as you want cage traps, in the job manager if you know how to do that. Also queue up that many Make Wooden Cage jobs at a carpenter's workshop or the job manager. b-T-c and choose the spot you want to put the cage trap.

DF Gameplay Questions / How to get soldiers to spar?
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:18:57 pm »
Is there some trick to get two or three soldiers to spar with each other instead of all doing individual combat drills?

And yes, the minimum was less than the number sparring and all drilling dwarves were in the same squad. Actually, several squads, each with twoor three trainers, but that doesn't seem like it would matter.

Really? I had a fort, running for years, that never had a SINGLE soldier spar. I'll ask about that in another gameplay questions thread.

Because a zombie is already dead, and making a big dead thing dead is easier than making a small living thing dead.

Why are living badgers so kamikaze? I have never seen them kill anything bigger than a guineafowl. Gant badgers, scary, but normal...?

You know what is reliable? "Hm, a two-z-level fall is needed for damage, so a z-level seems about 10 feet tall maybe, and a dwarf takes up one tile, so it seems that it's about 5 feet wide." In other words, your intuition and the needs of your knowledge. Want a 1000-ft drop? 100z-levels is doable.

That's called an ambush.

Good idea, though.

Actually, socks are just the ludicrous tip of a clothes-hoarding iceberg.
