Don't worry, dwarves never spar anyways.
And when they do, they just tap each other-n.o maiming allowed. That's the fortress guard's problem.

Give them cryptic warnings. Tell them of the wonders of adamantine, but be vague on how easy it can be for one false swing of a pick to bring demonic death on their fort. If they ask, give them advice, but don't tell them why.

Dropping the temp of heat rays so that they don't melt adamantine and figuring out some way to get them to not set the world bonfire would be a good start. Maybe make the lungs rot slower.

Also, remember how the Martians died to the Common Cold? Give blood a syndrome that can cause the necrosis of the Martians. Not perfect, but it should work.

DF Modding / Re: Dwarfy Pets

I was thinking lava shrimp or magma hippocampi or volcano vultures or something that swims. Yes, volcano vultures swim. They use little winglike structures, feed on charred organic matter and dead magma crabs, etc, and lay eggs that have obsidian shells, while males lay obsidian stones as unusual eggs. Their long necks are used to reach into crevices in the magma sea or to peek out of volcanoes to figure out if this spot has sufficient organic matter to char when food it lacking in the magma sea. Their feathers are flakes of obsidian, and their main method of attack is spewing fireballs. They are tamed for their feathers, which make oddly fashionable garments, their eggs, and their firebreathing talents, but catching a volcano vulture is easier said then done.

Yes, I made that up on the spot. Give me an hour and I'll have an ecosystem of a dozen magma-living organisms of various sorts, with everything from food sources to breeding habits noted. I have an active imagination, marking me as an excellent idea-spewer.

Edit: Fixednsome italics.

And they are the largest tameable non-grazer that is not nigh-impossible to get a breeding pair of.

Wow, I had just meant to subtly hint to hitty40 that he should at least explain how Goldendagger went insane...oops.

Okay, bro it's turn.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Adamantine Scimitar in random place
« on: July 22, 2011, 08:11:13 pm »
I think that anyone who is being honest will agree this is true: FLOOR OVER THE BOTTOM OF THE DE...er...the undiggable structure. This will, I think, save you from something more damaging to dwarves than caving in the dining hall and worse to your FPS than three undiggable structures stuffed to the brim with zombies.

Not that the scimitar is a bad idea. It should rock...if you survive.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: 2nd cavern layer has no plant life?
« on: July 22, 2011, 08:05:09 pm »
I have seen this happen with the first cavern layer twice, once as sorcerers and once as wizards (Wizard Tower mod). Fungi grew in soil layers, though, and later worlds generated with the same raws had fungi of all shapes, sizes, and colors, so I guesses it was a WT thing.

Any mods in your game, or were you just dwarves?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Egg-laying Races
« on: July 22, 2011, 07:56:18 pm »
You mean egg laying sentient races? If you mean egg laying domestic animals and if nest boxes work they do just fine. If you want them to hatch just build a door and lock the room so they cant gather the eggs.
No, sentients.

The mother doesn't need to stay on the eggs all the time for them to hatch, if that's what you're trying to find out.
Really? Wow, that changes everything!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dragon eggs...?
« on: July 22, 2011, 07:55:15 pm »
Supposedly, they breathe fire at incoming enemies.

In theory, a dragon hatched one frame ago should breathe fire as hot and scary as it's angry mother's. Of course, if you get into this kind of situation, you're in deep doo-doo, but still. Putting a dragon into a booth like a silk farm's should cause the dragon to spew fire at passing cavies, incinerating nearby dwarves. Oh, and at goblins, incinerating nearby soldiers and the booze they carry. You have been warned...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to make an arena?
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:07:56 am »
An arena? Elf. Drop the gobbos into your meeting hall from 20-30 z-levels up. Cripple next siege with -goblin bone bolts-. Repeat.

DF Gameplay Questions / Egg-laying Races
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:05:42 am »
Maybe this should be in modding, but meh.

I have heard conflicting reports on the behavior of egg-laying races. Some claim that nest boxes keep the eggs warm, others say not.
Has anyone had any experience with this?
