I was thinking lava shrimp or magma hippocampi or volcano vultures or something that swims. Yes, volcano vultures swim. They use little winglike structures, feed on charred organic matter and dead magma crabs, etc, and lay eggs that have obsidian shells, while males lay obsidian stones as unusual eggs. Their long necks are used to reach into crevices in the magma sea or to peek out of volcanoes to figure out if this spot has sufficient organic matter to char when food it lacking in the magma sea. Their feathers are flakes of obsidian, and their main method of attack is spewing fireballs. They are tamed for their feathers, which make oddly fashionable garments, their eggs, and their firebreathing talents, but catching a volcano vulture is easier said then done.
Yes, I made that up on the spot. Give me an hour and I'll have an ecosystem of a dozen magma-living organisms of various sorts, with everything from food sources to breeding habits noted. I have an active imagination, marking me as an excellent idea-spewer.
