I had a skilled adventurer taken down easily by a hydra, as were his warriors from the king's castle. Plus, sewers are often connected to areas frequented by civilians who are caught, literally, with their pants down if a seven-headed draconic monster attacks from below.
And your examples were probably where the many soldiers could easily surround the hydra. And were more skilled than random City Watch people.

I repeat, sewer hydras are scary.

DF General Discussion / Re: What Would Urist Do?
« on: July 07, 2011, 09:46:18 pm »
Nothing, bloodsuckers already exist, mostly in the form of procedurally generated beasts.

What would Urist do if his fort was visited by a caravan of Eldar?

You don't. You assign them an axe or you tell them to equip a battle axe.

Note that when it's designated for the military it cannot be used for woodcutting. Also, draft me for now and make a barracks and tell me to train there; that way in my spare time I can train.
A. Great, I didn't bring an extra axe.
B. Whenever I get around to making a barracks, sure.

Slate 2, 5
Steelmines is working on the furniture storage/carpentry/wood storage area.

Slate 3, 5
The orders got through. I am working on a few statues, Doc on mechanisms, and Conan is continuing to cut down trees.

Slate 4, 5
I chose a spot for a leatherworking area, which I just noticed was missing.

Slate 5, 5
Steelmines chose to stop mining out the Fs/C/Ws area and instead mine out the last few spots in the future dorms.
Also, I'd like to show off a superior statue i made.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A ferric elf, former treehuggers turned to charcoal and metal and searching for death, killing a dark strangler, a small four-armed brute., Two of our future foes fighting. I hope that this will help everyone understand the danger we will be in if we all slack off. Imboker doesn't think much of it.

Slate 6, 5
Conan made the first mugs. Speaking of rock, I started a new rock storage program. The stone is thrown into a small hole near the craftsdwarfs, mechanics, and masons shops. Said stone is then used. Simple, no?

Slate 8, 5
Steelmines mined out the leatherworking area.

Slate 10, 5
I made another statue of dark stranglers being killed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Slate 14, 5
Another restless night on a soil floor. Steelmines needs to dig out the carpentry area and Doc needs to man it...

Slate 26, 5
The outside wall if coming along well. Steelmies is smoothing the future dorm.

Slate 27, 5
The militia and Conan were sent after a groundhog. Conan left his axe in the fort...idiot.

Felsite 7, 5
Ashton has been close behind the groundhog for a while, with Conan and G trailing far behind. Much longer and I'll need to call them off.
What a waste.

Steelmines finished the woodworking/wood storage area.

Felsite 10, 5
I called off the military.

Felsite 13, 5
I began fortifying the east-river entrance.

Felsite 22, 5
More red flash opal!

Felsite 24, 5
Badgers...Time to train the militia...
That idiot Conan left his axe in the dirt again! He has no notion of weapon maintenance or self-maintenance! I might want to set up DocHeimer's place soon...

Felsite 27, 5
Conan has earned a title as a wrestler.
Two out of six badgers left.

Felsite 28, 5
Make that one out of six.

Hematite 1, 5
Make that zero out of six.
Imboker's on break.

Shorter update, but it went through two months, so...

We should probably make megabeasts more powerful first. Or maybe only have them threaten outlying settlements, lest the nation's military drive them out.
Maybe. Or, maybe the king is afraid of the hydra coming out of the sewers and killing hundreds of civilians (possibly including said king) before the military is mobilized.

Sewer hydras are scary.

also bows, not crossbows, and blowguns for that matter, use swords as the melee skill, not hammer.  so if you use actual bows, you might try giving them swords as well.  if they do indeed shoot first, at least, before using the swords, i will be a happy overseer indeed.
You can't make arrows. Elf.

...OH MY GOD! I'M CALLING PEOPLE ELVES FOR ALMOST NO REASON!

I can imagine this as a game dwarf children play.

This way, they will drain your resources for less time.

DF Suggestions / Re: Storage for breath attack materials
« on: July 07, 2011, 08:28:21 pm »
Dragons aren't dragons without fire. I suppose that's a good reason behind not having their flames limited. I agree that harvesting dragon napalm would be neat, but an infinite-breath-attack tag would still be useful.

Well assuming they don't use natural bodily fluids or just pure heat.
Or magic.

Just take an extra ~10 seconds to look and make sure you're selecting obsidian or clay or whatever. I'd rather have to do that than add another layer of complexity onto DF.

54086
Except for destroying the clothes. My, is that wasteful. Just drop them a few hundred feet.

54087
Humify. Name: Drake.

54088
If we need to attack something, I'll draft you. In fact, if we CAN attack something, without suffering losses, I will draft you.

Until then, it's stone pots and wood chopping for you.

On a related note, how do you get woodcutters to bring their axes into battle?

DF Suggestions / Re: Don't bring babies on active military duty
« on: July 07, 2011, 08:10:28 pm »
So, you want to have to make several sets of armor that are too small for most dwarves, double or more the time that it takes for a dwarf to stop switching gear, and add an interface to choose armor size...to get infants combat-ready?

I'd rather just be able to set up a nursery area for militia moms to drop their tykes off at when it's time for Mommy to kill the evil goblins or get punctured by random wooden spears. Call me an elf, but that seems easier, simpler, and safer.
Just leave them in the bedroom, or rather, the care of a family member or friend. Creches are an anachronism.
Whatever.

I have a baby who killed two gobbo's during a siege. Both punches to the head, shattering the skull, tearing the brain.
You are more of an elf than I if you did not draft that dwarf IMMEDIATELY upon coming of age.

Perhaps it should be possible, if a town grows enough, to rebel against the mega-beast as well?
Obviously.
