I think this is enough for another update.

Granite 2, 5
Saw some badgers on the other side of the river.
Steelmines found the clay. As soon as we find stone, we'll be up to our chins in spare clay. No, wait, there is fire clay right below the clay loam!
Chert right beneath fire clay, which is (in case anyone cares) right beneath clay loam, which is beneath loamy sand, which is beneath loam, which is the top layer.

Granite 4, 5
Kiln designated.

Granite 5, 5
Tanner's designated.
Told Imboker to start gathering some plants, just in case.

Granite 6, 5
G built the tanner's. I built the kiln. Steelmines finished mining out the butchery area, and Ashton built the place.

Granite 10, 5
Stoneworking area finished. Spot for future Bridge to Cross The River dug out.
Designated the first part of the bridge and a nice dormitory dug out. Er, the bridge is not dug out, the dorm is.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Everywhere will get that nice, cozy feeling of a personal bedroom.

Granite 11, 5
DocHeimer started designing that bridge.

Granite 13, 5
Steelmines struck flash opal in the dorm walls! Interesting, no?
I'm building the bridge.
In unrelated news, I decided to mine out those four corners. The dorm doesn't look round anyways.

Granite 15, 5
Steelmines took a break from mining to start smoothing the dorm walls.
Other half of bridge designated.

Granite 16, 5
As Doc starts on the other bridge, I start on some "patch-up" floors.

Granite 17, 5
Patch-up floors complete, I designate a carpentry area and some furniture and wood storage areas.

Granite 19, 5
While the smoothed walls are somewhat nice, I told Steelmines to stick to mining for now.
Since Doc is done designing, I am building the other half of The Bridge Over The River. I also finished the mason's workshop, and Doc is working on the mecanic's workshop.

Granite 20, 5
Ack! A platypus!
...Wait, it isn't attacking me...it's safe to finish the bridge.
I chose a spot for the depot.

Granite 21, 5
Ack! The platypus!
It's in the fort! CALL THE MILITIA! After all, they're not doing anything important, and they need to keep in shape. Especially G.
False alarm, it went back in the river.

Granite 24, 5
Despite the platypus jumping onto the bridge every few seconds, I am finish-ACK! Too close!
Ah, there we go, bridge complete!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Not the prettiest, but I wanted it to become a wall when raised, and mason union rules prohibit a bridge longer than 100 feet, and I chose the wrong spot to put the bridge, so...Oh, well.

Granite 25, 5
I built the depot today.

Granite 26, 5
DocHeimer cancelled his hauling task because the platypus was in the fort.
He was on the surface.

Groundhogs came to replace the badgers. I sighed in relief and told Steelmines to dig over on the other side of the river at some point.

Slate 1, 5
Happy New Month. Steelmines has almost finished the dorm.
I noticed that that platypus was killed on one of his exploration by one of the poison worms. Hm, maybe they'd be good for the military...
Imboker is an adequate herbalist, I noted. Random note. Excellent way to end this...random spot on a page. I don't know, it feels like an end of something.

Let's get started.

From the journal of Goldendagger Pasthandles

Obsidian 7, 4
I live by a few rules. I make them up as I go along, but always follow them; that way I learn from my mistakes.

One of my more recent rules was "Never disrespect an elf who can survive being eaten by a giant river shark." I formulated this rule after an elf I was traveling with (say what you want, they're good shots with a bow and not afraid to get their hands dirty) took the axe from one of my recently-deceased comrades, leaped in to the water, got eaten...and hacked his way out of the gullet a moment later.
This rule did not end well.
The elf got killed by a mad ogre a couple weeks thereafter, a week ago. The ogre had a giant meat hook that tore his head right off! Well, his companions said that in order to properly respect his spirit, we had to eat him. Unthinkable as it was, it was more so to ignore a rule I had made. (Plus, rations were low.)
After that, of course, one other dwarf that saw me reported me. I fear that in honoring the one elf I could truly respect, I may have doomed myself to executuion, or worse--exile.

Obsidian 9, 4
I think I had a sympathetic judge. Instead of being killed or exiled, I am to lead a group of dwarves and keep them in line. I am also the mason, and a proficient one at that.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I should list the others in this group (The Holy Fiend...?), as well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Seven dwarves, three dogs, a cat, a turkey, two poison worms (I am assured that they are only dangerous to those that provoke them...I am not sure I believe this, but whatever), a water buffalo, and a yak.

Also present are:
Steelmines Kisstome, a proficient miner and engraver. He seems like a wimpy loner.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Imboker Treatyspring, the manager and bookkeeper, and a proficient leatherworker. He seems on the edge and cautious--a bit paranoid, maybe? I don't blame him.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Conan Metalblaze, the broker, a novice woodcutter, and a proficient stonecrafter. He wants to be in the military, but this will not happen. Between his importance and his weakness...no.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Speaking of the militia, the militia commander is "G" Sabreruled. He uses two axes in combat, a style that seems wasteful and dangerous...but whatever, i don't have a lot of choice, and maybe he will fight better this way. G is also a tanner, and is very musical. He sings all sorts of battle songs, which ought to put some fear into the hearts of the enemies we will face.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ashton Graspcloister, the militia second-in-command and the butcher, seems more reasonable, fighting with a hammer. She is creative and even more musical that "G." Also notable, she prefers cave dragon meat...this could be problematic...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Finally, we have DocHeimer (one word) Dwelledsmiths, an adequate carpenter and diagnostician, competetant mechanic, and novice surgeon, wound dresser, and archetect. He seems a little slow when you first know him, but he's nice and intelligent. Thank Sirab Zasid! I would not like to trust my life with some stupid, cruel person.

We have arrived.
The site is near the mouth of a "minor" river, but it is about 40 feet across, which makes it fairly major in my book. The surface is also sunk slightly beneath the ground's surface. So far, good!
Imboker lacks an office as of now, but he says we have:
3 bronze axes, a bronze war hammer, and a bronze pick (apparently, no copper could be spared for our voyage...beaurocrats)
Three alder buckets
Three silk and one wool bag, containing seeds
About 20 each of chopped yak liver, cave lobster, plump helmets, pyrelings, cave ale*, cave rum*, and whisp ale
*Wou;d they call it "dwarven [whatever]?
Six each of pyreling and plump helmet spawn, rock nuts, and pig tail seeds.

I told them where to drag the grazers to, and chose a good site for the future courtyard area, and off we went, starting a hole in the ground called home...Armorsouls.

On a side note, the elf thing was based off of one of my D&D adventurers, who died yesterday after having an ogre with some kind of nasty hook took his head off. He did, indeed, survive being eaten by a dire shark, but it was by wild shaping into a scrag and clawing and biting his way out. That was his third near-death experience, and the coolest thing I have ever done in a non-DF game, even if he was almost killed by party members thereafter.

Hopefully, another update will occur soon. Thoughts on fortress management? Want to claim a migrant?

*cough* Kinda sad *cough*

Elf. I like having my militia full of recruits that distract the goblins long enough for the people who actually went to train/the danger room/kill random wildlife to get there!

And, anyways, magma destroys clothes. A 20-30 z-level drop is more entertaining and easier to set up.

Do you count "make sure obsidian is nearest to the build site?" If so, yes.

This would be kinda nice, but I don't think it's needed.

54096
Sixteenthed. I think.

Seriously, it's irritating. Plus, if when my militia commander dies, it would be nice to have his.her quarters passed on to the next one.

Dear All Urists Of All Professions:
Learn from the mistakes of your comrades, and when confronted with a giant cave spider, run, don't sleep!
Sincerely,
GreatWyrmGold, Ovrsr.
P.S. Why did you name the place HALLCARNAGES?

Seriously, I had this happen to TWO dwarves in a row, with the same GCS!

Has fainting been implemented on the sly?
No. I think what happened was: Haul item to tomb job got canceled, dwarf got tired, I didn't have dorm/bedrooms set up yet so the dwarf fell asleep right there...

DF Suggestions / Re: Designation Canceled: Damp wall located
« on: July 07, 2011, 03:28:07 pm »
I'd rather just not have non-aquifer sources of water not dampen the stone above and below. Similarly with magma, but warm instead of damp and without the aquifer clarification.

On a side note, I want to be able to mod in magma aquifers.

DF Suggestions / Re: Don't bring babies on active military duty
« on: July 07, 2011, 03:26:40 pm »
So, you want to have to make several sets of armor that are too small for most dwarves, double or more the time that it takes for a dwarf to stop switching gear, and add an interface to choose armor size...to get infants combat-ready?

I'd rather just be able to set up a nursery area for militia moms to drop their tykes off at when it's time for Mommy to kill the evil goblins or get punctured by random wooden spears. Call me an elf, but that seems easier, simpler, and safer.

DF Suggestions / We have dungeons now? It has to be said...
« on: July 07, 2011, 03:22:54 pm »
Megabeasts, semimegabeasts, and other assorted nasties that [CAN_SPEAK] should be able to force civs to pay them tribute to avoid destruction. The creature would then move to or near a civ site. Once they do, food, jewelry, weapons, coins, and other assorted trinkets should pile up in whatever place they choose as a new lair.

Why is this a suggestion that has to be said due to dungeons? Think of if a dragon settled in a dungeon...

"No, you don't need to check the wiki or forums..."

I can think of no worse advice.

54102
Alright, downloading...of course, this is concurrent with my other succession game starting up...

I would like some way to cancel breaks on vital dwarves. Breaks sound official; if I don't mind risking my near-legendary miner tantruming more than I mind not having my fort dug out I want to have a tantruming miner dammit! I want other kinds of Fun!

Last day to vote on site!

DF General Discussion / Re: What Would Urist Do?

Nothing. That is just...an odd combination.

What would Urist do if his home planet was visited by Tyranids?
