Well, that's sad, I wanted to start a fort in a submerged town, digging down from the inside of a house until I hit the caverns, then starting a fort there...cool, no?

I'll make a note of that, and start looking for a site, just in case, but I'd like to give others a chance to vote and get a few more dwarves before we call it final.
Also, the "us choosing or whatever" requires people to find sites and then others to vote on them, so I suggest you look at the world and start figuring out a good-looking site.

Great, Steelmines it is.

We're tied up two-and-two, and I want to finish this vote today so we can start the fort or start choosing fort sites. And I'm fiddling with the poll so that the four jokers can change their votes to actual votes. Actually, I can't do that, so...yeah...
Also, before I start the fort, I'd like four more dwarves. Ideally not more miners, I like having just one for some reason. Also, smiths will be underused at the start unless I embark on a volcano/find the magma sea and find metal ore before the year is up. Just a warning about my playstyle.

Are you supposed to be unable to embark with wands?

You can't embark with them, but you can embark with materials used to make them.  You could say that wands are too fragile for travel.  They aren't actually listed in the entity file, this keeps them from being made cheaply at forges.
Alright...uh, which workshop are wands made at again?

I remember reading that floor grates block flying building dstroyers wanting to invade my well while still letting a well be used. My well is "dry."

Mind helping?

The wiki says, "Floor grates do no block fishing or taking water directly from a water source, though they do prevent wells from working if between the well and the water." So no, you can't use a grate to protect your well access. I've also tried this :(
Any idea what DOES do that? Or do I just station my recruits by the well whenever giant bats or swallows show up?

C. Loot the knives, sell them, then kill and loot more night creatures while trying to get villagers to join you, then stock up on weapons, armor, and ammo...
Then redeem yourself by slaying as many infected as possible. Perhaps, if all men know Urist is a True Hero, his home will let him back. (storywise, gamewise he'll probably die to a kick in the head by a night creature child or something.) Also, butcher the wolf and make stuff out of its body parts if you haven't already.

BTW, what did you make out of the cougar?
