DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How high to make my sacrificial pyramid?
« on: June 28, 2011, 10:19:48 pm »
Thanks for the advice.

If 20 z's is more than enough, how much is enough? Ideally to extract goblin bones and such.

Just checking: have you made sure your pyramid will not thaw? According to wiki, it can sometimes happen even in a freezing environment.
I thought constructed walls never thawed...
The constructions won't, but the bridge might if you make it out of ice.

If you're getting it all from a river you'll probably run out. A pyramid high enough to make a splatter will take way over 70 blocks, not including ramps for each level. Also remember that many creatures survive 6z drops. I suggest having a pit inside the pyramid so if you run out of blocks you still get the glorious spatter.
Thankfully (?), the river will melt, so if I'm patient I shouldn't lack for ice.
I'll see about the inside pit, though; that sounds useful. So, 4-5 aboveground and...15-16 underground? Sounds good?

DF Suggestions / Make Dwarf Therapist obsolete!
« on: June 28, 2011, 09:59:43 pm »
I am one of the few, the proud, the DF players who does not use Dwarf Therapist.

And it is sometimes a pain.

I would like to see a "quick-view" screen where you can look at the attribute, preferences, important personality traits, and so forth on dwarves without the clutter like deities, age, and physical description.
There might be some other ways to make DT obsolete, but no nice, simple ones come to mind. Maybe someone who uses Dwarf Therapist can help.

Also the art needs some work, but it looks like you're doing Microsoft paint with a mouse, which can be tough, so its good for now.
Still, I think it's pretty good.

I'd suggest you just stick to one race, a site that you choose, and a specified rule that makes it different from other succession games.

At this point, you can't really say if its going to be !!FUN!! or not since we still have a whole world to choose a site from. I suggest finding locations where you'd feel would suit the game best and posting them for people to analyze.
...But I like the idea of the community choosing a site!
Alright, who votes I choose a site?
(Also, yes the fort will only be one race. The question is, cobald or dwarf?)

(Bumping, gonna update in a bit! Been playing DF instead of doing assignment, but don't tell anyone ;) )
Dude, priorities! School is more important than DF, even if the fort is a community fort with half the forum hanging on its every word!

It might also be a good reason not to magmify elves. Sure, they failed to bring a single giant eagle, but that medicinal extract they brought might save that axelord you're so proud of...

DF Suggestions / Differing Item Materials
« on: June 28, 2011, 07:59:42 pm »
There are some inexplicable restrictions on what can be made out of what. Two things that come to mind are wooden statues and clay...cups? Mugs?

WOOD STATUES
If you can make a small figurine out of wood, why not a large statue?
This would be useful for some challenge forts. Also, one cannot currently mod carpenters'-workshop reactions.

CLAY [clay goblet name]S
When I was in 1st grade, I made a little clay bowl-like thing. If I was told to, I could add a handle. If a human first-grader, who makes paper airplanes fly crooked, can make a clay cup, why can't a dwarf craftsman? Before you answer, consider that they can make wooden mini-forges menacing with spikes of wool.

Thoughts? Other item-material ideas? Etc?

Excellent, I can't wait to make a IMIGRATION DEPARTMENT that shuttles useful dwarves into the fort, and free-loaders into some sort of Yeti Pit
I'm lazy. I'd just drop migrants into an oubliette. Of course, I'd leave enough space that in a few seasons "oubliette" would mean "20 z-level drop into a silk farm utilizing armed goblins and wild GCSs."

Dear Urist McMasterMiner,
Please, you spend most of your time running from spot to spot. Please mine out one spot at a time.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Would wooden spikes work?
« on: June 28, 2011, 07:28:37 pm »
No, I just thought it was weird how they disappear when the plate activates, then reappear when the plate resets. Seemed backwards to me.
Allow me to explain.

The spikes are placed in an upright position, so that you can spike the bottom of a pit without mechanisms. When the plate is triggered, it changes the position of whatever it triggers from its default position to the other one-out to in, in this case. Obviously, when the trigger returns to its initial state (i.e. the pressure plate is stepped off of), the triggeree (spikes) will return to the default position (up).

Don't fret.
ALL of your dwarves are going to die.

DF Gameplay Questions / How high to make my sacrificial pyramid?
« on: June 28, 2011, 06:56:43 pm »
I'm making a sacrificial pyramid out of ice. It's in a cold biome, and I'm getting the ice from a river, so I don't want it to be horribly big; however, I want it to make a big spatter.

Top layer will have a bridge or something to drop in the sacrifices, and will increase the size by one tile on each side for each level (3X3 followed by 5X5, etc; maybe start with 5X5 and a 3X3 bridge in the middle). I'll probably add 3-wide ramps on one side for access.

Suggestions? Something I forgot/should know?

Why do the spears seem to disappear when the pressure plate is stepped on?
They are retracted.
