I rather like ASCII graphics. Somehow, DF isn't the same even with a mere graphics pack. DF with 3D graphics? Heck no.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Horizontal Support?
« on: June 19, 2011, 04:27:00 pm »
Is there a building that acts as a horizontal support, supporting things and being collapsible?
Is it actually the support?

Retractable bridges - see the Wiki article on trap design, specifically chasm trap design.
Actually, bridges don't support stuff; otherwise, yes. (I know this from experience, but oddly, the non-support is not mentioned on the wiki.)

I was traveling in the caverns, trying to get from the frozen little continent I started on to a larger, more populous continent to the south. Silly me, I go to sleep...

And wake up on the surface.

WTF?

*applause*

I'd like to see the adventurer--I want to see if you can un-inhabit-ize a fort by killing the lord/lady and/or all of his/her soldiers.

DF Modding / Question about carpenters' workshops
« on: June 19, 2011, 03:11:36 pm »
Is it true that only a few workshops can have custom reactions in them? I was thinking of modding in wooden statues, but ideally I'd make them at a carpenter's workshop.

Stop funneling LSD into your computer.
I did not funnel ANY LSD into my computer!

The sad part is, after a while I started as what I told DF to start me as. Then a demon killed me. (I traveled to a cave in hopes of turning into a cave critter, but this demon didn't like that idea, apparently.)

what is better than mauling enemies with your own newborn baby?

Mauling enemies with their newborn baby.

While mauling them with your newborn baby
TWO babies? That's overkill. Just use a nice, old-fashioned magma cannon.

If you remove the exotic petness of them, jabberers are likely your best bet. Whales and whale sharks are the largest non-megabeasts, but live in water and lack [PET] tags. Cave dragons are exotic and rare, but awesome if you can tame a breeding pair. Sea serpents and sea monsters live in the ocean and are exotic or untameable. Ogres and blind cave ogres are sentient, and elephants are too hungry. Jabberers offer over 100 meat each, as well as 30 fat and ~80 misc. organs.

Of non-exotics, water buffalo are your largest easily accessible ones, but they require huge amounts of grass--~320 tiles per animal--so some kind of smaller grazer may be more ideal. Grizzly bears are the largest non-exotic, non-grazing, land-living animal in vanilla DF.

What's up?
I just started an adventurer in hell.

In the fortress defense mod, I made a frost ettin master demigod wrestler and started...er...you know...in hell...like I said a line ago. And...wait, I just noticed that I'M a demon!
Best. Bug. Ever.
Weird, though...The demons are nice, nameless peasants, and can't do anything useful like be recruited or give you a service or...anything. Even to other demons.
I can fast-travel out of hell, though, which is nice. Although when I got near a fortress and stopped I was a honeybadgerman, which sucks. I was hoping to...adventure somehow...and kill dragons and stuff. I was trapped in the top of a tower! I had to give in to starvation... :'( :'( :'(

Thoughts? Ideas on what the bug is? How else could I have dealt with being stuck as a badgerman? Whatever else you can think of?

EDIT: Tried being a great fiendspider high master biter. Nope, giant olm. At least caverns should be more fun, right? Oh, and apparently you can't eat plump helmet man body parts, despite them being made of plump helmet. EDIT EDIT: And apparently I started under the ocean, because I can't travel until I move away from the water. Given how slow olms are, I'm starving the olm.

EDIT^3: Beak wolf? No, ash gray demon, surrounded by others of her (?) kind. Huge leeches with round shells, long, shaggy, ash-gray hair, and poisonous gas. They know and intone the name of all they encounter, which must be kinda dull since demons lack names. If I could spew the gas, I would, just to see what it does. But I can't, and I'm outnumbered, so I'll try traveling...ah, crap, another under-ocean start. Can't I be a deer or random frogman citizen topside, or at least a whale?...Make that a sea monster.

EDIT^4: Huh, a dwarf seems to become an actual dwarf! Weird!
Too bad he seems to be encased in solid rock. Better retire...hey, he can actually retire! I thought my inability to retire had to do with the sites the critters were at, not their identities...so no critters retiring and living in houses.  :-(

EDIT^5: Ferric elf master bowman? No, fire imp!
Did you know that adventurers who see adamantine praise the miners?

EDIT^6: Hellfire imp? No, troll! Very low analytical ability...hah. I went to sleep and woke up in fast-travel mode all the way across the world as a...giant olm? Oh, crap, fast-travel lottery time...Maybe I'll get lucky and become a forgotten beast or something like that on the surface (yes, titan, I know)...You can't fast-travel in caves? Another innocent giant olm is going to starve...

EDIT^7: Un-retire the dwarf? Nope, creeping eye! I wonder if critters that feed on pure evil can stave...yep, they can!

EDIT^8: Spearfrogwoman? No, bugbat! Redundancy? Yes, lots!

Embark on an empty human fort. Improve its design.

Or, make sure every dwarf drinks only sunshine and eats only *dwarven syrup roasts* or masterwork ones.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bottomless Pits
« on: June 18, 2011, 03:45:19 pm »
I would like to see underground rivers return and have them integrated into the caverns; when boats are implemented it might be cool to have dwarven traders appear on the river if it connects to a site (along with maybe friendly subterranean tribes as well...or unfriendly tribes trying to raid a cavern outpost).

Underground rivers would be a wonderful feature. Boats seem a little too safe elvish. The dwarves should swim through the damned current.

On a completely different note, I say there should be pits. Perhaps not bottomless, just something that opens the first cave layer.
Do you know how hard it is to swim without knees?
Dwarves have upper and lower legs, therefore they have knees.

If your ocean freezes for long enough at a time, you can just build buildings on the natural ocean floor.

1.) Build a platform out to wherever you want the buildings to go.
2.) Wait for the ocean to freeze.
3.) Dig down into the ice.
4.) Make sure you have access from build-site to surface. Dig to seafloor.
5.) Build walls and floors in areas you want to remain unflooded.
6.) Deconstruct constructions to remove surface access. Make sure that everything will remain standing when the ice melts.
7.) Add tunnels from unflooded area(s) to fortress. In fact, maybe do this before step 6.
8.) Evacuate flooded area(s) before the ice melts! Failure to evacuate quickly WILL lead to dwarven death and may lead to the destruction of your entire fort.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Feed animals

So, dwarves feed domestic animals? Is this enough to keep cavies and rabbits alive?
