DF Suggestions / Re: Sane Defaults

I like ACSII, so I disagree strongly.

Don't worry. The pitchblende statue that I'm going to put in your room will solve all our problems.
...I hope so?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: DF2010 WorldGen "Cookbook" Thread
« on: June 10, 2011, 08:08:10 pm »
Has anyone found a small tropical island?
By small, I mean able to fit entirely in a smallish embark. Coast-to-coast, 3 or maybe 4 embark tiles.
You might be able to accomplish this by setting the mesh size to something like 4x4, then weighting the elevation to something like 1-20=15  40-60=4  and the others being one. Also set the elevation variance to the max. Hopefully that will give you some above-water elevations right next to below-water elevations.

Make sure to null out most of the rejection parameters, especially for mountains.

These values are just guesses, but the parameters should get you on the right track. You will probably need to play with elevations more, but the key is to increase the weighting for the 1-20 range to get lots of ocean, and increase the variability so you get lots of high next to low elevations. You may also need to set the mesh size to 2x2 if the islands are too big.

Check the docs on the wiki to get an idea of how mesh size works. Please post your parameters if you get something you like because other people will probably also want to use them.
I mean, an embark surrounded by water on all of all four sides.

Be warned, capybara people are grazers, so keeping them alive could be troublesome. Also, they are 3.5 times the size of a kobold.
Capybara people graze? Huh. Looking up the wiki...war capybara men still good idea, I think.

54425
Dear giant toad,
Please come and try out our nice, tasty dwarves. Especially the soap makers above ground. They are nice and clean!
Sincerely,
GWG, Overseer.
P.S. Ignore all light green carets along the way.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Combination Well + Waterfall
« on: June 10, 2011, 05:09:33 pm »
I'm concerned that the water would wash dwarves into the well.  Or that the well wouldn't accept water from the top.  Or any other number of Fun things.
I tried something like this. Dwarves and domestic animals kept getting washed into it, leading to the death of two and a cougar, as well as the loss of two recruits' worth of gear.
Including an imported galena training sword.
I had to take out the well and put in a floor grate.

54427
Well, the boatmurdered reference wasnt that subtle... :)
...I'd forgotten about that...I made a subtler one though. Hint: It's a name. The last two syllables.

What GWG lacks in screenshots, he makes up for in write-ups.

Spoiler: How to screenshot (click to show/hide)
I have the screenshots, but seem unable to get my post to show them. Pics from the second update:
Practicing; also the first kiln
Future grave areas
Tabafralmus is taken by a fey mood!
The lowly cheese maker claims the mason's workshop due to his experience in setting up a kiln.

And now for a quick update 3.

From the journal of G WG
Granite 15
Can't wait to see what the cheesmaker is making...a statue of cheese? Ha ha.
Told the Monkeyhead and mcguinty to stop hauling, in hopes of getting the work orders procsesed.
More kittens...I swear, when we finish, we'll be swimming in kitten tallow, meat, and bones.
The wildlife has tamed to turkeys and a couple capybara people. Gonna send the militia to the turkeys, the melees at least. The miners need combat experience.

Granite 16
Battle reports awaiting. Trees ordered cut down.

Granite 17
Svarte, a recruit, punched a turkey hen to death and is killing a gobbler. Make that, just killed a gobbler.
An animal caretaker, Thlabakatrobis (Clicheslab...I believe...maybe “Backwards cliché”...I give up) has come and chatted with me. She considers herself a spoony bard, but I have rarely seen a bard less spoony or bard-like. Or maybe I just don't appreciate kobold music.
I have started my project with a simple 25-foot strip of adobe (clay) over the nearby sea.

A letter to King Daggershoe
Dear Your Magesty,
Tlabafralfus, a kobold cheese maker at the fort I oversee, has created Onulimesh (“Great Netting,” a name that makes as much sense as dwarves artifact names), a native gold cabinet!
(Sorry I forgot the creation screenshot. However:

Good enough?)
Onulimesh is, I estimate, worth...2,520 iron anvils. Too long in a barter enonomy, I guess.
(252,000 Dbs)
Anyways, that is about three times the wealth of the entire rest of the fortress, including two other artifacts!
The pig tails are a sure sign it was meant to be a sign of my dwarven rule being prosperous, right?
I truly hope you send a caravan. Send stone, the kobolds have a legendary mason now.
Your servant,
Goden Weirdgranite.

Reply:
Dear G WG,
I will not send a caravan to a hole in the ground where the inhabitants refuse to speak a civilized tongue.
Your King.

Dear Kind Daggershoe,
Please? Surely goblins will arrive, you do not want them taking Onulimesh or the item spoken of earlier, would you?
Sincerely,
Goden Weirdgranite, Overseer of Gakruldus, the richest settlement in the region.

Journal
Granite 19
The cheesmaker finished his artifact. It is being put into the dining “hall” where everyone can worship it. Odd...The cheesmaker is only a high master mason...
Also noticed some random logs built into a random section of floor. Gonna remove them.
The shaman killed the last turkey.
My first project is running into delays due to only one worker working on it at a time, so I'm going to consider making my backup project. Step 1: Put more civilians to work collecting clay.
Noticed the soldiers were still trying to kill that turkey. Canceled the order.
I ordered all of our captured capybara men to be put in a cage.

Granite 20
Discovered the wood was covering an unsightly hole. Meh, the wood is more important. Maybe when we have spare clay.
Ordered the construction of a “gatehouse” in the west wall. Told the miners to de-ramp much of the remaining eastern coastal ares.
Another capybara man invasion…maybe Drakoniss or someone can tame one…Maybe I should ask for a pick, then I or someone could dig down for these poor creatures…I bet they could make a lot of glass…I’m getting off-track.
-----
Sorry about the small update, but I wanted your opinion on something.
Should I mod capybara people to be tameable? I know how, go into the data folder,  region 6 (that’s the region I put Gakruldus in), raw, objects, locate the capybara man entry, add [PET], maybe [TRAINABLE], probably [PETVALUE], and that’s that. The question is, do you think I should? I’d probably need to gather more berries and get an actual freshwater source…Thoughts?

Oh, and in case I still have no clue how to post pics: Here is the artifact's description.

54428
he didnt drop them in, he dug the rock out and flooded a lake surrounding a sealed chamber(s)
Ah...That is much different.

54429
Well, if it's that easy then I guess my guy is living up to his "sane mandates" promise!
... Spore you then.

We also don't have a potash maker so glass of any kind is out of the question. Thanks a bundle GWG.

Deeeerp. I suck at modding.
Er, I guess...sorry...I had a feeling a crystal glass preference would be a problem...

Or the ETS could just stand on a hill and take notes... or place bets. Or light fires. Or... kick all goblin axemen in alphabetical order.
Or insult everyone in the universe.
Or capture a dwarf, release him back "into the wild" with a tag of some exotic metal and a weird syndrome.
Or...Or...

Yeah, not extraterresrials, but normaller monsters could have weird goals like these.

54431
...And no one notices that a desert titan is made out of ice. No, ice capybara in the desert? Normal. Someone kinda figured out the military? Amazing!

Aaand sigged.
Cool.

DF Suggestions / Re: Secrets List (spoilers)
« on: June 09, 2011, 10:22:16 pm »
I like the idea of legendary skills only being passed down to favored apprentices/children, and perhaps only being gained by a mood to begin with.  I also like the idea of some mundane secrets like the secret of steel being a heavily guarded slab in the mountain home that would only be bestowed upon your fortress when it had become powerful enough to be a barony or something like that, so your civ would be sure it wouldn't be stolen by goblins or humans (which of course it could be if your fortress fell or you didn't guard it from thieves well enough).
Alternate, but similar idea:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In short, dwarves don't need to know the secret, and forts can't pass it on; however, other races can learn the reaction in other ways--secrets. In fact, this might be a way to allow lead->gold and other reactions to come up semi-regularly in gameplay: Add the reactions to the folder, but the only way to get it is to learn it from a secret.

54433
Hopefully the pics work, I got them on imageshack at least. ...Erm, help?
I'm starting strong; wait till the end to see why.

From the journal of Goden Weirdgranite
Granite 4
I have recently been instructed in a new cartography technique by these kobolds' leader-in-name, mcguinty. I will practice it by showing the place I put the designed kiln.

I'm still working out the bugs...

Drakoniss is working on taming the turkey. It's a use for all of our spare berries, I guess-Drak says they can only eat meat. Must keep that in mind.
Designated a new farm plot, for wood stalks and berries, for alcohol and emergency wood. Well, mainly wood stalks; the existing plot will work for berries, I think.
Designating space for a new well, one that is not in the hospital.
Set up a work order for wooden caskets. Wonder when they'll be approved. Wonder who the manager is. The hoardcounter/shaman or the head kobold?
One wave of haulers cleared out everything except the helm of one unfortunate soldier and...everything of the other. Suppose that we'll be done soon and able to add our share to the growing projects around here.

Granite 5
Cat gave birth to kittens. Caging a couple to ready for slaughter when older; keeping the third for breeding purposes. A fish dissector grabbed the helmet; clear up the last casualty and there'll be nothing left to be taken by kob...wait, right.
Well tunnel being dug. Wonder why that one tunnel hasn't been dug, then notice the dampness. Maybe if I can make some kind of “Flood the World weapon...” My kind has it better, but these poor folk can't get withing a roc's throw of magma, so no lava-traps.

Granite 6
Discovered the locals use a jellyfish as their symbol.
...Seeing as they're ocean folk, appropriate.
Cheese maker is building kiln. Let the clay-collection commence!
I put the high master miner, Spish, in charge of Glosholer (meaning “Assorted Wounders” in kobold). Figured he should better himself above his name.

Granite 7
Kittens...what ever will I do with them?
Ah, right, stuff them in a cage, toss them rats, and butcher them when they grow up.

As I was designating an area for future graves...

...I got an odd announcement.
(Picture lost, it said that Jludugusalbus became a stray cat.)
It seems whomever adopted Jludugusalbus (“Make us a tunnel, archmage!”, an odd name for a cat) chose to abandon him/her, but I cannot find the cat formerly known as Jludugusalbus. Odd indeed...

And so ends my first week as overseer.

Granite 8
I have chosen Lrobojrildus as another warband commander. His talent should take him far.
A warband commander has been hunting for four days straight now, and has yet to bag a single animal.

A deity has smiled on us! Tabafralmus, the cheese maker who built the kiln, has been taken by a fey mood! Let's see...

Odd...Most likely some worthless trinket...but I hope it will be something useful!
Ordering a mason-s workshop built in case that is what he is looking for. Also a spare craftsdwarfbolds workshop.

Granite 9
My orders are being ignored...

Incredible! My little suggestion to build a kiln out of stone has inspired this lowly cheesmaker to build...some kind of furniture, I imagine...
He is grabbing native gold nuggets...two more...graphite...another native gold nugget...cassiterite...a chunk of rock salt...another gold nugget, totalling five...rhesus macaque leather...rough indigo tourmalines...Goody, he's starting! Can't wait to see what it is!

And that's enough of that.
-----
So, just in a bit over a week, a new industry was started, many kittens were born, and a piece of furniture most kobolds would likely worship has been started, just to mention the most notable things...is this normal in sucession forts? If it is, I might have to join more.

If the FPS doesn't continue to suck.

Bonus: Who can find the reference in the translations?

EDIT: Spoony bard, I'm bolding you now. If I figure out what I'm doing wrong I'll put up stats.

54434
Could I sign up for a turn and a kobold, if it isn't a problem?

Any preferences for a kobold? You're in for a turn.

@GreatWyrmGold: So, a dwarf has come and taken command of the kobolds?
As far as story goes.
Really hilarious if dwarves come to attack this turn...if in later turns, it's 'cause Goden told them what it was he saw...

Current list:

Still can't do much until somebody wants to be dorfed with the moody presserdwarf.

If the presser isn't taken, I will. Name: GoldWyrm.
If s/he is...give me a chance to finish reading the thread.
EDIT: Are there any dwarves left? If not, I'd like one of the migrants who decides to come for the sights and stay for the shield-me-from-goblins ruins. EDITEDIT: If any survive long enough. Name: GoldWyrm. If no migrants EDITEDIT have survived after a year or so, then I'll take the next unclaimed baby. I'll come upwith a personality once I know what the dwarf is.
Oh, brother, migrants don't live long...I'd like the next infant. I'll come up with a personality once s/he is born. Name: GoldWyrm. Boonus if baby Goldworm likes gold!
Also, how did you drop the dwarves in safely? I can't think of any way that wouldn't end in !!dwarf pancakes (~20)!!.
