The way I do screen shots is to just press the Print Scrn button and then open paint and press Ctrl+v to paste it.
ctrl-v...probably will workbetter than cpy-pst.

Er, now how do I do that with just my keyboard?

As for checking the 'c'ivilization screen, I've done that, and my selected civ showed "there are no significant people" (or whatever the message is), but I still receive migrants season after season.
Your civ is alive, but the king is not.

Locate adamantine. Smelt some high-value stuff. It will attract sieges. A lot, of multiple kinds...

Has anyone found a small tropical island?
By small, I mean able to fit entirely in a smallish embark. Coast-to-coast, 3 or maybe 4 embark tiles.

DF Modding / Are babies supposed to crawl?
« on: June 09, 2011, 06:08:52 pm »
Because titles have a tendency to confuse people, let me explain:

I borrowed and messed with a clay golem I found. One change was to make them reproduce. One gave birth to a two baby clay golems. They are crawling around, unlike their parents.
Do humanoid creatures crawl around when infants or did I mess something up?

I think I'll get this down, for starting.

From the journal of Goden Weirdgranite
I am Goden Weirdgranite, a dwarven overseer. I ascended to my position after being the sole survivor of a goblin seige, by not dodging into a well and then pulling the right lever. I was once just a lowly potash maker, then a soldier, then an overseer, and now an ambasator to a kobold outpost. Maybe after meeting with the leaders there, I will be able to convince them to let diplomats from our fair mountainhomes go to their capital without being robbed from head to toe.
-----
Dear King Daggershoe,
I have bad news. The locals currently have no leader. However, as you commanded me, I will say until a leader. Hopefully, that will be in a year or so; in the meantime, I will shepherd these small creatures.

The first thing I noticed was a large number of capybaras. Capybari? Anyways, two capybara men, five capybara women, and six giant capybaras. Two were named, presumably from killing kobolds. One seems to be called, given my knowledge of the kobold tounge, “Oh crap I'm being eaten by a giant-giant-water-rat” and “Look there's another AUGH!” Four capybara women, a capybara man, a duck, and a turkey are caged. I quickly ordered the duck and turkey to be tamed.
I also noticed that there was a legendary carpenter, as well as several underskilled ones. I swiftly ordered that only the legendary--Shigodis, which means “Lover of fairy-metal,” as he likes a type of metal that most believe is fantasy--who has creted an excellent ashen armor bin.
Also, someone made a strange object called a “chew toy,” as explained by a helpful glassmaker. Chew toys are probably not usually encrusted with native gold. This one is, and seems to be made mainly of pig bone. Both artifacts are encircled with bands of their main substance.
Another thing I noticed is that, despite the large amounts of clay and idlers, there is no one collecting clay. This would likely help their defenses, so I am working on putting a kiln in an out-of-the way location and preventing useful kobolds from collecting clay when they should be working on other things.

I chose to pull a lever, hoping it would keep out the monsters outside, then realised that there were no gates to close. I must add that to my list of to-dos.
Well, what's the worst that could happen?
I might want to pull it again, just to be safe.
(Aw, I was hoping something interesting would happen...Aw, crap, that was keeping our water fresh wasn't it?)
The hospital seems well-stocked on thread and cloth, and also has some buckets; however, there are no crutches or splints. I put in a work order, or try to...
While searching for a barracks that might be present, I noticed something...odd. I have a feeling that this might be an excellent choice for a future outpost if Gakruludus (“Sunkboats” in kobold, or maybe “Shipkiller” or something like that) should fall.
Sincerely,
G WG, Overseer.

Fitalus, a fishery worker and archtect, designed the kiln. Excellent...Now I need a mason to build it.
Realised hospital needs tables for surgery.
Decided the capybar...i? -as? Whatever they are, they won't be a problem for our undertakers. Maybe their pets will return to the safety of our compound.
Granite 3
This last action has caused a massive reduction in idlers, which were in the 20's and now only number in the single digits.

It has come to my attention that you are in a party while a fellow kobold languishes in the hospital. Please cease your party shortly. You have 24 hours or so before I stop your party, and you don't want that, so leave on your own.

It seems that the doors in the southern wall are forbidden but unlocked. Claiming them now. Considering locking them.

Anything I missed? Hopefully I'll get through a bit longer next update.
Also...I'm having trouble with screenshots. I can get them into a word document but not anything you can put on Imageshack or whatever. I didn't have anything to screenshot anyway, but I need to figure this out at some point.

Wow, I'm impressed. I was almost certain Svarte would be dead... but he's not so it's cool.

Looks like it's your turn, GreatWyrmGold.
Ayup. Downloading. With luck, I could get an update in today.

I KNOW BLOODY CIRCUSEY WELL HOW TO NOT MAKE CAVEINS! I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO MAKE CAVEINS WORK FOR ME AND NOT KILL MY MINERS!

To be fair, your original post may have been poorly worded - I had to read it several times before I understood that your miners were standing on top of the floor they were trying to collapse.
...Yeah, I guess so. However, the second time seemed clear:
...Don't designate them for channeling?
I'm wanting to use caveins for faster pit digging. Didn't you pay attention to the second sentence?

Why do my miners take damage from one z-level falls? Do they take massive internal injuries from being in dust?

It's the dust - it's violently slamming them against the floor/walls, and that causes significant damage.
Then why does it seem like they fall straight down despite not being near walls or floors except for the one a z-level belo...wait, can they be slammed violently into floors below them?

Dwarves always attempt to do jobs from a particular direction. IIRC, they'll always stand to the west of the job site if they can, north of it if they can't stand to the west, south if they can't stand west or north, east if no other orthagonal direction is available, and then the diagonals in the same order - NW, SW, NE, SE. You can take advantage of this if you control where your final support-severing channel designation is such that the safe side is where they'll prefer to channel from.

Alternatively, build a support above or below the place that you're going to be severing, link it to a lever, then do your mining and finally use the lever to cause the collapse.
Thank you. This will save many a miner of mine. Or, at least, will make me savescum less.

EDIT: Why do my miners take damage from one z-level falls? Do they take massive internal injuries from being in dust?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Search for Dead Civ
« on: June 08, 2011, 06:01:28 pm »
So, how do you know when you have a dead civilization?  With 0.31.25 I keep getting dwarves even when legends says the last city of the civ was destroyed more than 500 years previously.  I've also genned a world (small, 2 civs) in which all the dwarven civs failed to show the statue symbol on the embark map, yet I continued to get migrants, even after four years (that one I didn't check legends to see whether both civs had their cities were destroyed, however).
'c'. If there are no dwarves civs listed, your civ is dead.
...What if there are multiple dwarf civs with access to the site, but yours is dead?
