Artifact bonus. Test it in the field, and even if it's an underperformer, it's still A weapon.
Even if gold axes are so-so in the arena, artifacts do better than the qualityless weapons in the arena.

I got a high master carpenter in an early migrant wave.
First fort that most of the furniture was wood. Masterworks everywhere!

Unless the dragons are already your enemies Then...it's more !!fun!! and slightly less fun.

DF Suggestions / Colossi
« on: June 05, 2011, 03:15:42 pm »
Most semi/megabeasts, and most DF creatures in general, have a strong basis in myth and therefore a strongly defined "personality." Not bronze colossi. Therefore, I suggest that either:
1.) Bronze colossi gain more characterization (possibly from a Threetoe story, until Toady One gets around to programming the relevant stuff in).
2.) Bronze colossi are replaced by the following colossi:
(Warning:May contain metaphors that make little sense.)
Iron Colossus

Steel Colossus

Bronze Colossus

Wood Colossus

Obsidian Colossus

Copper Colossus

Maybe these would be castes of a "colossus" creature...hm...

I would like your thoughts. Although it would be cool if my ideas for colossus castes were taken, I'd be just as happy to see DF bronze colossi get a bit more defined.

Dear Urist McObsidiandwarf,
You are an obsidian dwarf. You can throw fireballs. I expected that you would use those in combat given previous experience modding toads to run mountainhomes and breathe dragonfire (long story). Therefore, I gave you archery skill and no weapons.
Don't punch the gargoyle to death. Or, barring that, put on the armor I bought for you first!
GWG, Ovrsr.

Dear Urist McSameObsidianDwarf,
Alright, you and a coalition of nearby domestic animals have beat the gargoyle into unconsiousness. Now stop gouging lips. Try kicking it in the head or, better yet, using fireballs on it!
GWG, Ovrsr.

Dear U. McWowI'mTalkingToThisSameObsidianDwarfALot,
Congrats on...actually, I'm not sure what I'm congratulating you for, a turkey killed the gargoyle. Anyways, three more have been spotted. Good luck!
GWG, Ovrsr.

Dear Urists McAllOtherDwarves,
The domestic animals and militia commander are taking care of the assorted gargoyles. They are all broken all over. You can come within a few hundred feet of the wagon, stockpiles, entrance, workshops, and such. In fact, I suggest it. Otherwise, you'll all starve.
GWG, Ovrsr.

Dear Gargoyles,
You will be shattered if you keep returning. We might run out of domestic animals soon, but by then the militia commander will have built up her unarmed combat skills. Come in large numbers or, ideally, not at all. I have too much pride to abandon over an issue that I can easily solve. If you promise to leave and never come back or send any of your species here for several years, you can take the dog, turkey, and cave tortoise corpses with you and SURVIVE.
GWG, Overseer of Goldengrave (?!? How appropriate...if we pretend that loamy sand is gold...).

Dear all nonobsidian dwarves,
Stay inside! There is a giant gargoyle rampaging outside!
Postmortem note to Urst McThatSameDa**ObsidianDwarf,
You shoulda thrown fireballs at that ***king giant gargoyle that was threatening to kill half of our population!!!
Sincerely (angry), GWG, Ovrsr.
P.S. He died.

You are wrong, we only think we're playing DF.

In reality, DF is playing us.

"What if we gave the humans the internet? I don't know, lets code it in and find out. Hey look, they would create a game about us! Hahaha, we look so silly!"
Wait, if I realize that this reality is just a computer simulation, will I start to see everything in descending green ASCII characters?
No, of course not! You'd see DF as realistic pictures. It really interferes with gameplay.

DF Modding / Re: Need help on new playable Civ : Spiderman
« on: June 05, 2011, 07:28:25 am »
They're basically bigger dwarves with six arms, they are already kind of overpowered.
Okay...why are half-spiders bigger than dwarves? Just asking...

DF Suggestions / Re: Designated pond source
« on: June 05, 2011, 07:11:20 am »
This is already possible with a pond zone and a water source zone.
Actually, the pond takes randomly from any water source zone and (maybe) any well.
The suggestion, which you would have noticed if you'd read it, is to choose which water source.

Also, support.

1717. You try to build a wall out of soap.
1718. You demand items made of hen's teeth.

DF Modding / Re: Dragonlance (Krynn) Mod
« on: June 05, 2011, 07:02:36 am »
I think thieves are hard coded to use only weapons that use knife user skill.  That could be the reason, but I haven't seen the raw files themselves to check.

Don't recall anyone ever doing a Krynn mod.  Looks like it could be interesting, especially fighting certain castes of Draconian.  Though I'm sure a couple of those on death abilities like the turn to stone thing aren't possible in DF, the explode on death one might be doable and incredibly dangerous.

bronze collsi turn to statues on death and nightwings turn into rocks, why isn't turn to stone on death possible?
It is, although not the "sword gets stuck" part. Just have them turn into granite or gabbro statues. If you are willing to do some material modding, you can even make dead draconians explode!

Dear Urist McSitechooser,

I suppose I am not as miffed as I could have been. I did not, thankfully, spend much time trying to rescue you and your 6 companions from the fate you clearly wanted. However, in case it is not obvious to you, a lake which literally opens up into the mouth of Hell is not a suitable place for a new settlement to extend the power and glory of the Mountianhomes. Please enjoy gargling demon mayonaise.

your Bugged Out Overseer
...Why are you unhappy, again?

---
Dear Urist McMechanic,
We have lots of booze, in a stockpile next to the river you hopped into. Also, you can drink from the river's edge if you are sick of all of the three types of booze we have. Also also, if you aren't trying to commit suicide, swim downstream and either jump to the mayor's dining room or slide down the waterfall to the escape ramps. You might get badly injured in the process, but you have a better chance of surviving that than if you just SIT THERE.
Oh, look, he drowned. Great, he's my only mechanic. Idiot.

DF Modding / Re: Bamboo Technology
« on: June 05, 2011, 06:23:25 am »
Sharpened bamboo at the carpenters workshop could probably make some pretty damn sharp wooden spears/trap spears. I'd probably give them a little more piercing power than normal wood but less than iron.
That's a rather good idea! Thanks!

54554
I forget, are there any nobles in Soaplantern?
A baron, my dwarf; some bureaucrats; maybe others.

DF Modding / Re: Bamboo Technology

You'd probably turn it into a tool- or toy-class item, the same way honeycombs are, which you'd then use in custom reactions to turn into coconut shell cups or something.
Oh, duh.
Anyone ready with a crash course in custom workshops? Ideally the graphicy part.
Also, what would a car or a radio probably use for its tile? Both are probably going to be tools, but maybe the car would be a workshop. Hm...
