DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortress Build + Reclaim
« on: May 17, 2011, 09:34:20 pm »
Abandoning will remove all mud (including the caverns).  Unless that was fixed of course.  Also you might have problems building magma versions of buildings.  Those have been bugged before.
"Oy! Cog! We're abandoning the fort!"
"Not yet, Urist! I need to clean up all the mud!"
"...Even the mud in the farm plot?"
"Yes! And I'm going to open the caverns so that I can clean all of the mud off of them!"
"You're crazy!"
"And so are you."

Now that I think about it, it would be kind of cool/funny/disrespectful to do a BIBLE ADVENTURES mod.
Probably all three, to the right kind of people. But most people who would be offended by it would be huddled in a corner babbling after glancing at what DF has to offer for a few seconds. So, it's probably mostly okay. Especially if you post screenshots of holy warriors killing foul demons with -<<*silver mace*>>-s.

I hope some of you are familiar with Norse mythology:

Loki has been ecstatic lately. He tricked another God recently.

Höðr throws ☼Mistletoe Spear☼!

The spinning ☼Mistletoe Spear☼ strikes Baldr in the head, shattering the skull and piercing the brain!

☼Mistletoe Spear☼ has lodged firmly in the wound!

Baldr has been struck down!

Höðr has been upset lately. He has killed a family member by accident while sparring recently.
Yeah, I am.  :D

How would you asphyxiate when you're being crucified?

They don't tear your lungs, do they?

Eventually you lose the strength to hold yourself up and your windpipe gets squashed by your own weight.

It's pretty fun :D
...You have a weird sense of fun. Even for DF players.

WHAT if...we increase the allowed size to 6x6x6? Not much, you think? Aha, but now you can fit FOUR workshops per floor (okay, three unless you want to leave your dwarves trapped...).

Plan:
1st floor: Dug out in soil. Farms (pig tail, plump helmet)
2nd floor: Maybe dug, maybe constructed. Kitchen, still, butcher's shop, nest boxes.
3rd floor: Probably constructed. Leatherworker's shop, food stockpiles (with a cat patrolling it).
4th floor: Constructed. Dining hall (Decorate lavishly if at all possible). Maybe a workshop or another food stockpile. Maybe an animal pen.
5th floor: Constructed. Workshops (bowyer, craftsdwarf, space for another one).
6th floor: Constructed. Ideally include glass windows or walls. Dormitory. (Or individual rooms, if you prefer.) Decorate lavishly, if possible.
How many dwarves would this support, how can it be improved, and does anyone want to build it?

DF Modding / Re: Bones and their uses
« on: May 17, 2011, 09:06:40 pm »
I like how this went from a dwarf fortress modding discussion to a real life biology discussion

A very awesome biology discussion, ofcourse
And how would it be any other way here?

I'm just glad to have a less-directly-related-to-DF use for my random useless knowledge.  :P

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Weird Worldgen Wars
« on: May 17, 2011, 09:01:55 pm »
A: 47 humans, 39 elves, 1 goblin, no losses

Humans and elves?! With a GOBLIN?! He was obviously their leader, and that entire army needs to be exterminated. I've developed a bad taste in my mouth for humans since in my current world, goblins killed their diplomat, I avenged them, then the bastards seiged me. I killed all their friends and sent a couple limping back, yet still they come.
Nah, humans are just accepting of anyone. I would be, too, what with elves' high physical stats, dwarves' mechanical genius. and goblins'...ability to have their entire poor cultural upbringing erased in a single generation. The only bad thing is that human-raised dwarves sometimes shave their beards, and goblin-raised elves without their culturally-imposed pacifism or wooden weapons...scary.

Had a good one on my latest map. The entire Kobold race was rendered extinct in 'The Searing War' after a cyclops called Ferame Flickerdawns got annoyed with the Kobolds stealing things. Ferame waged three battles in spring, summer, and winter of year 3 on the three Kobold strongholds of Hatedfrog, Menacenewt and Lancedfair. Each time he took around 10 humans from the civ he had become God/Ruler of.

The final battle was known as "The Outrageous Onslaught" (a battle which still gets engraved into ALL MY WALLS 500 YEARS LATER, by a civ that it didn't happen to). Ferame must have been taken by suprise, or was just over confident, because he alone attacked the fortress of Lancedfair. He slaughtered the most of them and left.

The remaining Kobolds begged for peace, but it did no good, as they were all extinct by year 4. Most of them starved to death, the three battles having destroyed their society. Ferame wiped out 3 civs by himself.

He's been pretty quiet since then. He lives in a jungle and every 20 years or so goes on a good rampage.
Well, what else would you do? He realizes that the world's changed, more rampages than that will cause outbursts from those other than the long-lived elves and dwarves, and may cause more and more competent adventurers to attack him. Worse, if he rampages often enough, he might be in another war...but suffering from arthritis, cataract, and having-decent-metal-spears-driven-into-your-spleen-by-a-decent-warrior-itis.

DF Modding / Re: Warhammer 40,000 Mod (With Tyranids)
« on: May 17, 2011, 08:54:42 pm »
I can replace the ores with things that are very dense. I suppose that would make them do plenty of damage.

EDIT: I got termagants shooting bronze, it causes decent damage. I did run into the problem that I cannot seem to find a reasonable body type... How does one have a give a quadruped arms and claws? I'll post up what I have so far when it begins to at least vaguely resemble dwarf fortress with tyranids. Then I'll start adding in all the more futuristic stuff.

Open up body_default and add:[snip]
I think you'd make a whole new creature body plan, alter it like this, and give termagaunts that body plan, etc. I think.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stop stealing your own eggs!
« on: May 17, 2011, 08:50:37 pm »
You can change the setting of your food stockpiles to not accept eggs
What if I want non-kobold eggs to get put in the stockpiles?
Fine-tune the egg filter on the food stockpile.
Yeah...surprised I didn't think of that before.
Huh, different castes show up differently on the stockpile screen.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Old DF?
« on: May 17, 2011, 08:44:42 pm »
I'm thinking about downloading one of the earliest versions of Dwaf Fortress, to get a feel for its start and for a change of pace.

1.) What was the first edition that was...minimally bugged?
2.) What major differences can you think of between that version and DF2010?

DF General Discussion / Re: What Would Urist Do?
« on: May 17, 2011, 08:37:53 pm »
Kill himself while it still works.

What would Urist do if he got lost in the human sewers?
Nothing. Unless you count dying of thirst 2 feet away form some water.

What would Urist do if he had an infinite supply of food and booze, but was lost in a human sewer built in an evil area?

54655
Erm...

No metals of any kind ? AND a aquifier ?
Kobolds can't mine through stone anyways. And aquifers aren't that bad in my (limited) KC experience.

koblod camp? How is this going to work? Will we have to download an extra mod?
Unless I'm mistaken, saves contain their own raws, so no.

I might sign up, but first I have to find my flash drive...I'll give you a heads-up on when that is.

54656
I don't suppose I can ask someone who watches this thread to volunteer as a mason?  We need a lot of stone-related materials right now, desperately.
Anything to avoid being targeted with an unfortunate accident!  :P
Seriously, I'm fine with it. In fact, I'll just say it now: I'm fine with any labor that is not likely to be dangerous, especially if it is not laborious or it involves some creative expression. Just be sure to mention it.

Also, Khift made a figurine of Dutchling, but it's of him being terrified of blood gnats, so I'm not sure if it's a good idea to throw that in Dutchling's tomb...
Yes. Why not?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Pig Tails?

At this point I would like to point out that DF has one of the kindest ,most helpful and least troll-ridden communities I have ever seen.  Bravo Folks!
yeah dude.
I love it here.
even when someone asks a completely STUPID question (i have numerous times) no one makes them feel stupid or flames them at all.
this really is a tiny oasis of manners and sanity on the internet.
Manners, yes. Sanity? You haven't been playing DF very long, have you?

54658
Something that makes it even easier? Unless this has changed from .23, items worn/carried by caravans appear in your stocks while they're on the map. You can unforbid and dump all the (steel breastplates/battle axes/chainmail shirts) at once using that method! Of course, once you already have some, using this mass method can get a bit messy.
Just [tab], and only dump the forbidden ones, then unforbid all of them.

54659
Or maybe animate them into sludge monsters for extra !!Fun!!.
I like this idea, but it would guarantee that idlers would become preoccupied with cleaning blood.
On a side note, I noticed a dwarf cleaning soil walls the other day. It was kinda weird.

Gotta say...
I just want a ladder. :/

And no one can convince me I don't need one. Anyone who tries hasn't thought of everything a ladder could do.

Cant a set of up/down stairs do pretty much everything a ladder can??
Except be easily re/moved.

I'd really like to see the new 'undead army' thing combined with the old 'tame exotic creature' mechanism.  Something like:
  • Some god teaches Hippy McElf the secret of taming the honey badger.
  • Hippy McElf goes to the wilderness, begins taming honey badgers.
  • Hippy McElf declares himself to be the "king of the honey badgers".
  • Hippy McElf creates army of honey badgers, runs around attacking stuff and ravaging the countryside.
Depending on the tamed exotic creature, this could range from the dangerous ("lord of the elephants") to harmless ("lord of the ducks") to surreal ("lord of the snails").  Either way, I figure it would be cool.
Or the hilarious on multiple levels ("Lord of the Flies") or terrifying ("Lord of the Bronze Colossi," "Lord of the Skeletal Whales," "Lord of the Really Hungry Vultures," "Lord of the Inexplicably Angry and Deadly Badgers")

54660
When I discovered that dragons can't fly. I think.

when i learned that the only weakness of bronze collossi are fluffy wamblers
Not true. !!MAGMA!!!
