2. Smoothing stone also trains engravers, so using magma doesn't really save you anything.
Sometimes it helps. And, of course, it is dangerous and requires magma.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Legends Mode
« on: April 25, 2011, 08:15:08 pm »
Your civ could have died. Once, I genned a 7500-year-old-world in which nothing of note happened after year 4 or 5. Everyone had starved. :(

Okay. I just got this fort's first migrant wave. No one had any names or social skills.
Bug? Or side-effect of this odd issue I had with a removed mod?
Or is my copy of DF screwed up?

EDIT: Total of eight. No critters, either.

DF Gameplay Questions / ...Huh?
« on: April 25, 2011, 07:41:36 pm »
An ice bridge over a volcano deconstructed. No, not melted, deconstructed. The three chunks of constitutent ice were on the edge of the volcano.
Any explanations?

If you give me the formula, the one I got from excel Q&A doesn't work...
Is it harder than whatever you did to make the names "orange?"
No, you may not live that down ever. Then again, I might forget.  :P

I have mandated engravings in his chambers, as well as similar ones for the rooms belonging to GreatWyrmGold.
Thank y-
Wait a minute...

DF Modding / What can we mod vermin corpses to be useful for?
« on: April 25, 2011, 05:54:09 pm »
What useful purpose can we mod vermin remains to be useful for, and how? Food? Fuel? Ammunition for a new emergency weapon?
Something else?

Not to my knowledge.

DF Modding / Re: question on traps.
« on: April 25, 2011, 05:07:58 pm »
No. Sorry. All traps are hardcoded.

Maybe you could make a weapon that did some of those things, or at least mimicked them, and then put it in the trap...

Dear Urist McCook,
Do not cook all remaining booze in the fortress into one roast along with a single seed. How did you do that?
More importantly, why? We have no reliable water source, so we need that booze!
Ugh.
Sincerely,
GWG, Ovrsr.

Dear ovrsr,
you cannot stop my cooking art! next time, forbid me from using the booze. But that would make me sad. You don't wanna see the cook sad right?
A. I expected you to stop before you cooked ALL of it. Aside from seeds, booze is the most common food source we have. WHY do you cook DOZENS of drinks and a couple of spare seeds into roasts?
B. Get to work on brewing more booze. I will stop you from cooking it this time.
Also, "Ovrsr' is short for "Overseer." Please refer to me by my full title; the abbreviation is for brevity and my peers.
Sincerely,
GWG, Ovrsr.

(That last part wasn't aimed at you, shadeknight; I was saying that to the "dwarf" who ignored formality.)

Dear Urist McMechanic,
Why were you even outside? I told you to link up a lever to a bridge. The lever, the bridge, and your workshop are nowhere near where you were when you were "interrupted by a honey badger". WHY were you there?
Sincerely,
GWG, Ovrsr.
P.S. It helps if you run TOWARDS the fort.

Dear Urist McUselessthresher,
First off, what do threshers even do?
Second off. when I station you on a bridge, stand on the bridge.
Third off, if I assign you back to a burrow after you left to eat and drink, go there.
Fourth off, can you catch up to that cheetah?
Sincerely,
GWG, Ovrsr.
Dear cheetah,
Don't worry. That thresher? Can't fight worth a lick. It was only my desire to execute him in a more fabulous manner that saved him from those lions. You can take him. Kill him for me, and you'll be lauded as a beast who took care of one of the more annoying threats this fort has had to deal with! That stupid honey badger already left, so obviously I'm referring to the thresher.
GWG.
Dear Urist McNewthresher,
Help out Urist McUselesthresher. That is all.
Sincerely,
GWG, Ovrsr.
Dear Urists McMilitia,
I wish lions had been here instead of that cheetah. Go station yourselves on that bridge.
GWG, Ovrsr.
Dear Urist McWrestler,
Congrats on your promotion from Urist McRecruit, and formerly from Urist McMigrantThresher. This should make your bare-knuckles boxing with the jaguar more interesting.
GWG, Ovrsr.
Dear Urist McBadass,
Congrats on your promotion from Urist McWrestler. Now go kill that lion...
GWG
Dear Urist McStilluselessthresher,
Hurry up and kill one of those big cats! Or starve and dehydrate trying!
GWG, Ovrsr.
Dear Finwane, Lion:
If you kill Urist McStillUselessThresher, I'll help you choose a better name than you got from killing Urist McMigrantthreser-excuse me, Urist McBadass, he punched a jaguar to death, sorry. Good job, though.
Dear Urist McStilluselessthresher,
Your ability to discern what a stupid situation is has caused me to check to see if a...flaw in the universe's laws is still active. If so, you will live eternally in the volcano, never aging, never starving, watching other useless dwarves plunge past you. (Or maybe not. Extinct dwarves might mean only the two migrant waves. Ah well.) If it does not still work that way, then you will burn to death. Pick your poison.
And, if you die, next life, choose a USEFUL profession.
GWG.
Dear Urist McMason,
Please build those coffins and slabs for the soldiers that died fighting big cats or falling into the volcano.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I need a megaproject idea.

Giant, 6-z-level-high statue of a toad, made out of gold. On its back, put seven statues of dwarves, all made out of obsidian, to represent the founding of the fort.

And make the toad spit magma.

DF Modding / Re: Er...What happened to Adventure Mode?
« on: April 25, 2011, 04:33:23 pm »
Without actual raw files there is little we can say.

Try reverting the dwarf entity back to default, you may have left a typo somewhere.

The only thing I changed was the [CREATURE] tag, which now reads [CREATURE:DWARF].

DF Suggestions / Gifts to Dwarves
« on: April 24, 2011, 05:10:18 pm »
This suggestion is simple. Allow items to be given to dwarves by
the fortress. This would presumably make the recipient happier. Why do this?
1. It will give a purpose to artifact rings and stuff. "Wah! I'm miserable and a useful dorf and about to go insa-Ooh, artifact ring! Thanks!
2. It will make happiness upkeep easier. This allows you to provide incentives in the form of negative thoughts.
3. Think of the potential challenges and projects!
4. It will help pre-find economy bugs.
5. "Here, Urist! I'm sorry about your cat, but have a cat leather robe!"

Ideas?

...if you used some of the braincells Armok gave you and not embark in the middle of an iced over 50tile wide major river...
Any chance you have the save?

Dear Urist McLastDwarfInTheFort,
Build the depot, haul crap there, trade, chat with the liason, THEN get to your other work.
GWG, Ovrsr.

Dear Urist McEngraver,
Take a break from engraving bedroom walls, and carve out those darn memorial slabs!
GWG, Ovrsr.

Advanced World Generation parameters. No cavern layers. World history >4-5 years. Dead dorfs, 'cuz they don't hunt in worldgen.
